Gary Lineker 'to front BT Sport's Champions League coverage after agreeing BBC pay-cut'

2 June 2015 2:13 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Gary Lineker will reportedly sign a new non-exclusive contract with the BBC, after agreeing terms allowing him to front BT Sport's Champions League coverage.

The Match of the Day host's future with the public broadcaster had been the subject of some speculation, with reports earlier this year that he was having serious discussions with BT Sport.

A BT spokesperson told Digital Spy: "BT doesn't comment on rumour and speculation."

However, the Daily Telegraph says that Lineker has now agreed to take a pay-cut in his new deal with the BBC, where he is expected to continue fronting football coverage.

BT Sport is scheduled to unveil its talent line-up for the 2015/16 season next week, but earlier today confirmed that Jake Humphrey has signed a new four-year deal.

As part of the new contract, Humphrey's role has been expanded to include anchoring the pay-tv channel's coverage of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League games. »

2 June 2015 10:05 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Jake Humphrey has signed a new four-year deal to continue fronting football coverage on BT Sport.

In addition to continuing to host the channel's Premier League and Fa Cup coverage, Humphrey's new deal will see his role extended to include UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League games.

BT Sport won the rights to all 350 live matches from both tournaments for the next three seasons, starting with the 2015/2016 competition.

"I have loved being involved at BT Sport from the very beginning," Humphrey said. "The last two years have been some of the most enjoyable of my career and on the way we've had some cracking games, part of the reason we've taken the channels from zero to over five million subscribers in the process.

"The next stage is even more exciting as we become the only place to watch live UEFA Champions League. Fulfilling a childhood dream to present the »

Can Top Gear continue without Jeremy Clarkson? Vote in our poll

11 March 2015 4:01 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Top Gear's future is up in the air following Jeremy Clarkson's suspension over a "fracas" with a producer.

Three of the current series' episodes have been pulled from the schedules, and it is currently not clear if the show will return, with or without Clarkson.

Hundreds of thousands of fans have already called for Clarkson to be reinstated, and Top Gear remains a hugely popular programme around the world. But would it be anywhere near as successful without Clarkson front and centre?

James May and Richard Hammond are also integral to its popularity, but could the show remain as popular with just the two of them or perhaps a new presenter?

Bookmakers have already picked the likes of Chris Evans, Jake Humphrey, Vicki Butler-Henderson and Eddie Irvine as potential replacements, but would they have the same impact? Or is it time for the show to come to an abrupt end? »

BBC spending on talent is down by 15% since 2008

4 March 2015 7:40 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

A review has found that the BBC has spent 15% less on talent over the past five years.

Salaries for stars on TV and radio have dropped from £221m to £188m since the last review from Oliver & Ohlbaum was released in 2008.

The BBC has also spent 29% less on stars earning over £100,000 a year.

The review stated that the BBC had made "vast improvements" in managing salaries, and that the corporation had paid less and allowed more stars to leave.

It also showed how stars including Susanna Reid, Chris Moyles and Jake Humphrey had left the BBC, but that it had still "maintained the quality of output for licence fee payers".

Former employee Jonathan Ross - whose salary was thought to have been around £6m - has also left since the Trust's last review.

The report added that the BBC must keep in check "what it gets for the money it pays »
