Our weekly round-up of the big news stories from the world of movie superheroes…
Once again, Marvel's The Avengers continues to shatter records at the global box office as audiences remain enthralled by the adventures of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. In North America, the Joss Whedon-directed superhero team-up became the fastest film to cross the $400m mark, achieving the feat in just fourteen days (four fewer than it took The Dark Knight back in 2008, albeit with the benefit of higher ticket prices), and it has also overtaken the world-wide haul of Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Bat-sequel, making it the highest grossing comic book movie of all time...
...As if that's not enough to earn bragging rights for Marvel, the film is now also officially Disney's biggest ever hit, having surpassed Toy Story 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to sit at #6 in the all-time global chart. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King »

The CW presented several new shows at its Upfront celebration in New York City this month. As fans of the CW’s previous Smallville series, starring Tom Welling and Justin Hartley, we were extremely looking forward to the first trailer for Arrow, based on the DC Comics’ character Green Arrow. The series stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, and Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance.
In the 12th Team Focus Blast Off, BuzzFocus Community Manager Ernie Estrella and I discuss the first trailer for Arrow (you can see it here). We explore potential story arcs, secondary heroes and villains we’d like to see and potential politically influenced story arcs. We also dive into Arrow’s vast array of arrow weapons, ranging from flash bang arrows to boxing glove arrows.

Herein you will find the first full length trailer for the latest DC adaptation, Arrow, based on their character The Green Arrow. It will be screened on the CW network in The Americas.
We reported on Stephen Amell (90210, Vampire Diaries) landing the lead role back in February, and he seems to be running with it. As you’ll gather from the trailer, it’s verrrrrrrrrrrrrry Batman Begin-y. Millionaire playboy goes out of town, grows a Kurt Russell-style beard, learns to be a badass, comes back to town, gains a super hero alter-ego, avenges his father, takes out goons. I’m surprised DC aren’t suing themselves.
Here’s the official synopsis:
A 27 year old reformed bad boy, who after having spent five years shipwrecked on a tiny, brutally dangerous island in the South China Sea, returns to town a different man. Or to be more specific, a tortured, thoughtful »

Earlier in the week The CW confirmed that it would be getting back in the superhero business post-Smallville when it was announced that they'd picked up the DC Comics small screen adaptation Arrow for a full season, and now the network has released the first footage from the upcoming live-action series, along with a new promotional shot that gives us our best look yet at leading man Stephen Amell (The Vampire Diaries) in full costume as the Green Arrow himself, Oliver Queen...
And without further ado, here's the footage...
Update: A trailer has also been released, which you can check out right here...
Arrow is produced by Greg Berlanti & Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern) and Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe), and the pilot episode was directed by David Nutter (Game of Thrones). Amell is set to be joined in the cast of the hour-long by Katie Cassidy (Supernatural), Colin Donnell (Pan Am »

The "Arrow" madness does not stop! The CW has released another round of footage from their upcoming DC Comics adaptation, this time showcasing a whole lot more than just Oliver Queen being jacked and shooting arrows.
Still, Queen's very much the focus of the trailer, as he should be. We see his disheveled, bearded visage stalking the remote island he's been stranded upon for five years, using his expert marksman skills to unleash a signal fire. When he returns home to Star City, Ollie's got some 'splaining to do… namely to former flame Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), to his own sister (Willa Holland) and to his best friend Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell).
Check out the whole trailer past the break!

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fifth and final one announced. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on The CW.
With "Hart of Dixie" last season's sole surviving new show and "Gossip Girl" finishing up with a short final season this coming Fall, The CW is pushing hard on original content this season with five new shows ordered as opposed to the regular two or three. There's also a bunch of timeslot changes with "The Vampire Diaries" the sole show to have not changed its place on the network's schedule.
The additions have allowed the sub-35 skewering network to essentially have theme nights - prime-time soaps on Mondays, quirky medical dramas on Tuesdays, male-dominated genre action shows on Wednesdays, and female-oriented supernatural romancers on Thursdays.

When it came to showing advertisers the goods at their upfront, The CW offered up splashy, lengthy looks at "Arrow," "Beauty and the Beast," "Emily Owens M.D.," and intriguing midseason offerings "The Carrie Diaries" and "Cult." And we have clips! We tip our fedoras to The CW, the network with the highest our-kind-of-primetime-show count, second only to Syfy. Well done, The CW! And though they canceled one of our shows – sorry, The Secret Circle fans – they’ve brought in two more: The Arrow and Beauty and the Beast.
These new shows surround or maybe even caused a shift in scheduling for fall 2012. Supernatural fans especially, take note. The CW would like to take over our TVs on Wednesday, with DC Comics-based we’ve-been-waiting-so-long-for-this Arrow at 8/7c, followed by Supernatural at 9/8c. What a great pairing! And Not on a Friday, hooray! The CW, you are now granted our TVs on Wednesday nights.
Thursday nights will bring a return of the beloved The Vampire Diaries at 8/7c, paired with newbie Beauty and the Beast at 9/8c. Yes, yes, this also works for us, thank you! The »

Arrow: First Look at The CW's New Superhero Drama
The CW has been without a superhero show for a year, but all that's about to change when Arrow premieres in the fall.
Taking over Smallville's old spot as the lead-in for Supernatural, Arrow brings the Green Arrow character that also appeared in Smallville to a brand new show, one that's intended to be a darker exploration of superhero mythology.
Billionaire playboy Oliver Queen begins a new stage in his life after a terrifying shipwreck. Missing and presumed dead for five years, he's finally discovered alive on a remote tropical island in the Pacific Ocean. Oliver returns home to Starling City, where he is welcomed home by his mother, Moira, his sister, Thea, and his best friend, Tommy. But his loved ones sense that Oliver was greatly changed by his experiences over the last five years.

The CW announced several logical scheduling moves today as it had to make room for five new dramas. The biggest move we observed was the network pulling Supernatural out of Friday and moving it to Wednesday nights. It will no longer be pitted against Fringe and Grimm and will be paired with the Green Arrow-based drama, Arrow.
Arrow is going to star Stephen Amell as billionaire Oliver Queen, who was missing and presumed dead after a shipwreck, before resurfacing on a remote Pacific island. Upon his return to Starling City, and acclimation back to his world of philanthropy, Queen creates the vigilante persona of Arrow to restore his city to greatness. Also starring is Colin Donnell as best friend Tommy, Katie Cassidy as former girlfriend Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as chauffeur John Diggle, Willa Holland as sister Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as mother Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance. »

Oliver Queen/Green Arrow was a prominent part of the last few seasons of "Smallville," which may have helped pave the way for a series with the character in the lead. But "Arrow" is a full reboot, not a "Smallville" spinoff.
The CW's new show, which will air on Wednesday nights in the fall, stars Stephen Amell ("Private Practice," "Hung") as Oliver Queen, the scion of a billionaire family who was presumed dead in a shipwreck. He's found five years later but returns to his Starling City home a changed man and adopts an alter ego, Arrow, to help the downtrodden and try to right the wrongs his family has done in the past.
And, since he's a billionaire and doesn't have any superpowers of his own, we're guessing that Oliver will have the means to make or acquire some pretty good gadgetry.
"Arrow" also stars Katie Cassidy ("Gossip Girl, »

Chicago – There have been a number of surprising announcements of new nights for hit shows this week (“Two and a Half Men,” “Glee,” “Revenge,” “Community”) and The CW closed out the trend this morning by announcing their Fall schedule and revealing that “America’s Next Top Model” and “Supernatural” will swap evenings. They also revealed that three new shows will debut in the Fall.
“Supernatural” moves to 8pm Cst on Wednesdays and “America’s Next Top Model,” in steep decline the last few years and the focus of Tyra Banks’ recent controversial decision to fire most of the judges and cast, will move to Fridays at 7pm Cst.
Finally, this season of “Gossip Girl” will be the last and buzz-worthy “Sex and the City” prequel “The Carrie Diaries” is being held for mid-season. So, we have that to look forward to.
