Barely Lethal is the brand new movie from director Kyle Newman, who you may remember brought us that really rather good Fanboys a few years back – the film about the young guys that want to break into George Lucas’ home to screen The Phantom Menace? I really liked that. Following on from Fanboys, Newman worked on The Crazies TV show, and another couple of shorts projects before landing the gig to direct Barely Lethal, which can only be described as a cross between Mean Girls, Spy Kids, and well, Kingsman.
Scripted by John D’Arco, the film revolves around the character of Megan Walsh (Hailee Steinfeld), an orphaned teenager who was brought up by Samuel L. Jackson‘s Hardman, a mysterious figure who runs an organisation called the Prescott School for Girls, »

Director Colin Trevorrow has come under fire for sharing his opinions about the gender imbalance among directors of big-budget studio films.
Known for directing monster hit “Jurassic World” and recently announced as the director of “Star Wars: Episode IX,” Trevorrow responded on Friday to a Twitter user asking if he thought he would have been hired for “Jurassic World” if he were female.
“I want to believe that a filmmaker with both the desire and ability to make a studio blockbuster will be given an opportunity to make their case,” Trevorrow’s tweet reads. “I stress desire because I honestly think that’s a part of the issue. Many of the top female directors in our industry are not interested in doing a piece of studio business for its own sake. These filmmakers have clear voices and stories to tell that don’t necessarily involve superheroes or spaceships or dinosaurs. »

Taylor Swift released her latest music video on Friday, but it seems the pop icon may have been inspired by another cultural phenomenon.
Fans were quick to point out how Swift’s artsy, ethereal video for new single "Style" resembles the opening credits for HBO’s cult crime drama True Detective.
The central imagery for both videos features profile shots of the "main characters" overlaid with other artsy video. In fact, the "Style" video opens on a side profile of Swift with an inlaid shot of a man standing on a beach, very similar to imagery of True Detective star Matthew McConaughey from the show’s credits.

For horror fans who love to celebrate holidays in their own ways, this upcoming weekend couldn’t be any more delightful. We get a Friday the 13th the day before Valentine’s Day on Saturday the 14th. If that doesn’t sound like the perfect excuse for a genre-themed movie marathon, then I don’t know what does.
Okay, so some folks reading this might not have thirty years of horror movie-watching expertise under their belt like I do. Let me give you a rundown or schedule of events for the weekend’s festivities.
Begin Friday night with a mini-marathon of Friday the 13th movies. There are currently twelve to choose from. Most new-school slasher fans will no doubt choose the 2009 remake. If you’re looking to get educated, my personal choices are the original 1980 grassroots version, the grindhouse-influenced Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning, and ridiculous Jason X »
