Sundance London 2017 Review – Bitch (2017)

Bitch, 2017.

Directed by Marianna Palka.

Starring Caroline Aaron, Eric Edelstein, Kingston Foster, Jamie King, Ren Hanami, and Jason Ritter.

Synopsis:

An ordinary suburban family descends into chaos when the mother suddenly and unexplainably takes on the psyche of a rabid dog.

There are few experiences like sitting through Marianna Palka’s violently off-beat Bitch. What hooks with a fascinating set-up very, very quickly loses itself in some of the most frenzied and uncomfortable editing this side of a half-forgotten Taken sequel, and winds up doing nothing short of totally defecating over every last drop of its potential. It’s easily one of the most grating 90-minute indies in recent memory; a talented lead and a powerful initial by-line, totally squandered.

This isn’t to say that Palka’s ideas are anything but solid; there’s a relatively firm central push towards the meaningful here, covering everything from gendered roles in the family,

Sundance Review: ‘Bitch’ is a Bold and Fearless Domestic Comedy

One of the more emotionally taxing features to earn the classification of “midnight movie” — at least in this year’s Sundance program — fearless writer-director-actress Marianna Palka has crafted an bold, dark domestic comedy with Bitch. Based upon a strange case in her native Scotland, it centers on a woman who channels her spirit animal into a radical transformation.

Palka plays housewife Jill, a suicidal introvert raising four children seemingly alone in a generic suburbia. Her husband Bill (Jason Ritter), an empty suit at an unnamed firm, offers little help, spending time with a sexy co-worker Annabelle (Sol Rodriguez), ignoring his work and family obligations. To add insult to injury the kids seem love their absentee dad while torturing Jill with a daily crisis, from getting dressed to bed wetting accidents.

Haunted by a barking dog reminiscent of Summer of Sam, Jill undergoes a Kafka-esque metamorphosis, hiding in the basement, rolling around in her own feces,

Mickey Rourke’s Face

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City (2005) is playing on Mubi June 18 - July 17, 2016 in the United States. Sin CityWhat happens when a performer’s face changes? This very question animated a bewildering piece by Owen Gleiberman last month in Variety, wherein Gleiberman—a man—pondered whether Renée Zellweger’s slightly aged, maybe plastic surgery-tinkered visage made her an entirely different performer. He sustained this mediation on the basis of a whopping three-minute trailer for Bridget Jones’ sBaby, hoarily declaring his good intentions to combat Hollywood’s sexist machinations at his piece’s onset. Yet, in spite of this pretense, his approach exhibited an astonishing lack of stringency, ultimately scrutinizing Zellweger along the same sexist lines he claimed to bemoan. Like others, I find this storied practice of male critics inspecting women’s faces pretty odious. If male critics have gotten craftier than such forefathers as John Simon (who,

Relax, Instagram Users: Why the Timeline Change Isn't as Big of a Deal as You Think
Don't go into Instagram's Twitter mentions. right now. It's Not pretty. Why? Because Instagram users are convinced that this new algorithm is going to muck up their timeline and ruin their social media experience forever. And not only is that a horror show, but your Instagram feed is probably filled with variations of this meme: "Turn On Notifications because [Instagram] has decided to control our feeds according to likes not chronological order," reads the caption accompanying the photo. "So, if you would like to see my feed...in the moment, which is the most logical way to see someone's Instagram, please turn on the button." Everyone from Jamie King to your former...

Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West, round two! Buy your tickets and step right up, because these two are going at it again. This time, there is no Vma stage to watch it unfold. We're watching the beef go down over Twitter and Instagram, because we all know in this day and age, feuds play out best over social media. Kanye and Taylor have some bad blood between them (again) because he raps about the pop star on his song "Famous" off his new album T.L.O.P., and he's not exactly sending her warm regards on the track. "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why, I made that bitch famous / God damn / I made that bitch famous," he raps on the song. Taylor's squad, like Ruby Rose, Jamie King...

The Sound and the Fury | Review

But a Walking Shadow: Franco’s Faulkner Redux Merely Serviceable

Continuing to thumb his nose at naysayers, James Franco plunges onward into his own particular directorial abyss with his second William Faulkner adaptation, The Sound and the Fury. Much like its predecessor, 2013’s As I Lay Dying, the actor-filmmaker manages a troubled synopsis of Faulkner’s enigmatic text but still remains unable to strike a visual resonance necessitating his undertaking.

Ambitious and a bit pretentious, Franco’s cinematic hubris may know no bounds, though it’s still refreshing to see him shirk the limiting lasso of mainstream sensibility in his personal crusade to create something meaningful. That said, there are several moments reaching a certain poetic pitch, collapsing a quartet of perspectives into a simplified triptych. Complex characterizations and the narrative resonance of Faulkner aren’t quite intact with this otherwise faithful transplant, but its first and third acts maintain a watchable melodramatic energy.

The Gamechangers review

Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton star in The Gamechangers, a drama about the making of the Grand Theft Auto series. Any good? Not exactly...

Nb: The following contains spoilers.

How do you make an interesting film about coding a videogame? It sounds like a difficult subject to dramatise on the face of it. But ultimately, all great stories are more about the relationships between characters than what they do for a living. A movie that contained nothing but boxing matches for 100 continuous minutes would leave audiences reeling. The Rocky movies were approximately 90 percent drama to 10 percent boxing, and audiences, for the most part, flocked to see them.

BBC's The Gamechangers takes the Rocky approach to Grand Theft Auto - specifically, the making of 2004's hit sequel San Andreas, the controversy surrounding a hidden sex scene on the disc, and the legal tussle that followed. In its dramatisation of real events,

Daniel Radcliffe's The Gamechangers review: Tense, nostalgic drama is Grand Theft Auto meets The Social Network

Video gaming isn't the subject of many films (and we're not talking Pixels), but considering that Grand Theft Auto V became one of the world's best-selling entertainment products ever in 2013, it was only a matter of time.

Daniel Radcliffe sports a beard that his old mate Hagrid would be proud of as Rockstar producer Sam Houser in this one-off BBC film, which follows the company's difficult encounters while developing San Andreas back in 2002.

The film makes it very clear that it is in no way authorised by Rockstar, and so one can expect a certain degree of poetic licence in this tale of a bunch of white Brits making a game steeped in black American culture.

Director Owen Harris and writer James Wood must have been influenced by The Social Network in some way or another. David Fincher's 2010 film focused on another tech genius as he created something the whole world would eventually want.

Barely Lethal review: “Mean Girls meets Kingsman, but not as good”

Barely Lethal review: Despite it’s very different twist, Barely Lethal turns out to be just another teen movie. Barely Lethal review

Barely Lethal is the brand new movie from director Kyle Newman, who you may remember brought us that really rather good Fanboys a few years back – the film about the young guys that want to break into George Lucas’ home to screen The Phantom Menace? I really liked that. Following on from Fanboys, Newman worked on The Crazies TV show, and another couple of shorts projects before landing the gig to direct Barely Lethal, which can only be described as a cross between Mean Girls, Spy Kids, and well, Kingsman.

Scripted by John D’Arco, the film revolves around the character of Megan Walsh (Hailee Steinfeld), an orphaned teenager who was brought up by Samuel L. Jackson‘s Hardman, a mysterious figure who runs an organisation called the Prescott School for Girls,
