Steven Spielberg in Talks for Gods and Kings

15 November 2011 12:36 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in September, we reported that Warner Bros. is eyeing Steven Spielberg to direct Gods and Kings. Today we have word that the director has entered into formal negotiations for the biblical epic.

Michael Green and Stuart Hazeldine wrote the screenplay, which tells the complete life story of Moses, from birth to death. The script is based off the Book of Exodus and other stories from the Bible's Old Testament. Our earlier report said that Gods and Kings is not a remake of the 1956 classic The Ten Commandments, which starred Charlton Heston as Moses.

Dan Lin and Matti Leshem are producing Gods and Kings for Warner Bros. If the deal is finalized, it isn't known if this will be Steven Spielberg's next project, since he has several other movies in development.

No production schedule was given for Gods and Kings.

Gods and Kings comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg. »

Steven Spielberg in Talks to Direct Biblical Epic Gods And Kings

15 November 2011 11:10 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In September, we learned that Warner Bros. and producers Dan Lin and Matti Leshem were aiming to get Steven Spielberg to direct the biblical epic about the life of Moses, Gods and Kings.  According to Twitch, this lofty aspiration has surprisingly led to formal talks with the legendary director.  I can understand the appeal for Spielberg who likes going big with his movies, and Gods and Kings would present him with the challenge of measuring up to Cecil B. Demille's 220-minute Moses epic, The Ten Commandments.  While most studios today would never allow an almost four-hour movie into theaters, I'd be interested to see if Spielberg could get away with it (assuming he wanted to make a four-hour movie). Michael Green and Stuart Hazeldine's script covers "the life of Moses from birth to death."  Hit the jump for a great recap of the major episodes in Moses' life. »
