“Fleabag” Gets Second Season

21 March 2017 8:02 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Fleabag

We haven’t seen the last of “Fleabag,” thank goddess. The series’ star and creator, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has confirmed that a second season of the pitch-black comedy is in the works. The bad news? We’re going to have to wait quite some time to see the horrifying — and hilarious — ways our favorite deadpan protagonist continues to fuck up her life. According to RadioTimes.com, the show’s sophomore season is expected to begin filming in November and won’t be broadcast until 2018. “We are all trying to make it work and have the same team back,” Waller-Bridge said.

Inspired by Waller-Bridge’s one-woman stage show of the same name, “Fleabag” is set in London and centers on a self-destructive young woman (Waller-Bridge) who owns a guinea pig-themed café. Don’t let Fleabag’s job give you the wrong impression — she’s not twee. At all. “I always want to go darker, and I’m always being advised to stay on the lighter side,” Waller-Bridge has said of her writing.

As we previously observed, Fleabag might project an air of randy confidence, but she really uses sex for validation and self-medication. She makes innuendo-laden, off-putting jokes to anyone and everyone, hits on the falling-down drunk woman she thoughtfully puts into a cab, and breaks up with her boyfriend on a whim because she knows he’ll always clean the flat before moving out. She’s a mess — and she knows it. The first season sees her dealing with her mother’s death, her evil stepmother (Olivia Colman, “Broadchurch”), her perfectionist sister (Sian Clifford, “Midsomer Murders”), her emotionally unavailable dad (Bill Paterson, “Outlander”), and the possibly-accidental suicide of her best friend and business partner (Jenny Rainsford, “About Time”). The season finale of the BBC Three/ Amazon series proved that Fleabag isn’t a reliable narrator, particularly when it comes to her late Bff’s tragic death.

“I really wanted to hide a tragedy in a comedy and I really wanted to trick people,” Waller-Bridge has said. “I love the idea of disarming an audience through comedy and making them feel safe, and in turn making them vulnerable to twists and turns that they might not be expecting from a character. It was one of the most important things I was trying to maintain in the TV show.”

News of a second season doesn’t come as a total shock. Before the first season aired, Waller-Bridge hinted, “We cracked it open so that she would be able to have a life beyond it and also there are so many more stories and story strands and character strands to come out of this series.”

It seems like 2018 will be a huge year for Waller-Bridge. In addition to the second season of “Fleabag,” we can expect a new series from the multi-hyphenate: BBC America’s “Killing Eve.” Based on the “Villanelle” novella series by Luke Jennings, the show centers on Eve, a fiercely intelligent security services operative who dreams of leaving her desk job behind to be a spy, and Villanelle, an elegant and proficient murderer. Waller-Bridge will serve as showrunner on the series.

“It’s a scarily wide net right now” said Miller about the search for Trish’s rapist. She’s not wrong. This week’s episode was all about the depressingly high number of plausible suspects. Ian doesn’t have an alibi. Cath has reason to think it could have been Jim. We were left thinking it was Lucas. Then there’s Ed, Leo, the caterer, the band, the owner of Axehampton House and roughly fifty other men, all of whom have yet to be ruled out.

Ellie’s moment of apprehension about that hooded dog walker showed just how widely the suspicion spreads. The bleakness of the picture was summed up by Cath and Trish’s crumbling certainty about »

A Second Season Of The Night Manager Is In The Works

7 March 2017 4:23 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The Night Manager was quite easily one of the best TV shows of 2016, and while the Tom Hiddleston-led BBC drama felt very much like a standalone series, it has now been revealed that a second season is currently in the works and already being written.

Director Susanne Bier’s adaptation of the John le Carre novel was met with widespread critical acclaim, huge ratings and a ton of awards, so this news probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Regardless, here’s what she said about where things currently stand with The Night Manager after confirming that season 2 is currently in the works:

“We all very much want to do a season two, but the thing we absolutely do not want is to do something that does not live up to the level of season one. That would be a really bad idea.”

That’s definitely encouraging to hear, »

Broadchurch review: a new case – and new life – for the crime drama

27 February 2017 11:20 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

It’s a return to form for the third and final series, as Olivia Colman and David Tennant are joined by Corrie’s Julie Hesmondhalgh. Plus: what really goes on in the House of Lords?

So, back to Broadchurch (ITV), for the third – and final – time. A traumatised woman turns up in the night at the police station in town. A single tear rolls from a faraway blue eye down her cheek. Her name is Trish and she has been raped.

DS Ellie Miller and Di Alec Hardy (Olivia Colman and David Tennant) arrive; they’re on the case. It’s what Chris Chibnall’s Broadchurch needed – a new case – after the second series. You don’t really remember the second series? Exactly, it was a bit of a mess. While the near-perfect genius of the first series is still hauntingly clear, I bet.
