Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?
My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.
When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.
Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.
John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me, »

Ronan Keating is said to be planning a permanent stay in Australia following his marriage break-up. The Boyzone singer recently announced that he and wife Yvonne had ended their 14-year marriage following an alleged affair in 2010 with backing dancer Francine Cornell. Keating is now looking to get over the split by staying in Australia, where he works as an X Factor judge alongside Mel B, former Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian and ex-Neighbours star Natalie Bassingthwaighte. "Really things never recovered after Ronan's affair," a source told The Mirror. "They've been determined to do their best for the sake of their children, but things have finally reached a head. "Ronan has been working in Australia a lot on the X Factor and he loves it. He's already been spending half of the year there and (more) »

Guy Sebastian has revealed that he has not yet signed up for the next season of The X Factor Australia. The Aussie singer, who judged the show last year alongside Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Ronan Keating and Mel B, said that he feels like he might benefit more from trying to build a fanbase in the UK. Sebastian told The Daily Telegraph: "I really want to do X Factor, I had so much fun last year and I had really good talent. It means I'm at home, you have a reliable income. "But... my focus this year is the UK. I've locked in a little team of lawyers and agents and had a meeting with a label who's keen. I'm at that crossroads: do I take a massive hit in income and release in the Us and UK, or do I do the show and try to do both? It's going to be a tough decision. »

Guy Sebastian has admitted that his newborn baby doesn't like his music. The Australian singer, whose wife Jules gave birth to their first son Hudson last month, said that when she was pregnant, the baby never kicked during his gigs. Sebastian told The Daily Telegraph: "He didn't move, he did nothing. But then he went to a John Farnham concert and he was kicking like crazy. Maybe he's more a John Farnham fan than a Guy Sebastian fan." The musician recently revealed that he wrote 'Big Bad World' about his son and hopes to have it finished in time for it to be a part of new album Armageddon. "I wanted to finish it once he was out in the world," Sebastian said. "Writing a song for your baby is a bit clichéd, but it's what we do, we live our lives through song. "It's about that (more) »

Guy Sebastian has become a father for the first time. The 30-year-old Australian singer, who is married to high school sweetheart Jules, revealed that she gave birth to Hudson James on Saturday, weighing 2.7kg. Sebastian decided to announce the news on Twitter rather than selling the first baby photos to a magazine. He posted a few pictures of him cradling his baby and wrote: "I'm in love. He's a little dude." He later wrote: "[He's] actually really chilled (for now)... hopefully he stays like that! He's so tiny. They don't sleep much do they?!! [He's] keeping me up." After accepting well-wishes from celebrities such as singer Kate Ceberano, X Factor winner Reece Mastin, supermodel Jennifer Hawkins and The Voice judge Joel Madden, Guy thanked all his followers for "all the kind words" (more) »

Guy Sebastian has revealed that he feels musically "inspired" by fatherhood. The Australian singer, whose wife Jules Egan is expecting their first baby next month, said that the imminent arrival of the child made him want to write about how he wants to be a good father. Sebastian told the Herald Sun: "The creative juices have been flowing a lot; I feel super-inspired. I should be finishing the record, but I started writing this song because it's just over a month before the little bub arrives; it's March 18." Although he is still working on the song, he revealed that the lyrics include the line: "You don't have to worry... I won't let the big bad world get ya." Sebastian also revealed (more) »

Ronan Keating would love to be a judge on a reality show in Europe. The Boyzone singer - who currently works alongside Melanie B, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Guy Sebastian on the Australian version of 'X Factor' - admits he would love to be closer to his home and family in Ireland. He told Bang Showbiz: "I'd love a gig in Europe, to be close to the family. I'd love to be at home. If I was in London doing any of the shows it would be great, but hey, I've gotta be grateful."
