Nick Jonas-Led Erotic Thriller Careful What You Wish For Coming to DVD This August!!

20 June 2016 7:19 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

When he’s not crooning away, singer Nick Jonas has done quite an excellent job making his way into acting, with roles on TV’s Scream Queens and now the erotic-thriller, Careful What You Wish For. Playing a young man caught in an affair with the wife Isabel Lucas) of a wealthy investment banker (Dermot Mulroney), Jonas really does a great job leading a film and shedding any traces of his pop star persona. Already on iTunes and digital platforms, Careful What You Wish For now has an official DVD release date of  August 2nd. We’d really recommend checking this one out. It’s not a “horror” film but plays with those thriller genre films that we all love so much.

A steamy thriller set in a wealthy vacation community, Careful What You Wish For is a story of seduction, deceit and betrayal. The summer before he leaves for »

[Review] Careful What You Wish For

8 June 2016 8:57 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The real mystery is how Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum‘s Careful What You Wish For got itself a theatrical release in the first place — no matter how limited. I’m not surprised Starz Digital is handling distribution, though, since it feels exactly like a late night pay cable ticket sanitized to an R-rating for lustful eroticism rather than actual chemistry, nudity, or plausibility. Sometimes thrillers of the “youthful stalker hits the sexual jackpot” variety can at least be entertaining in an ironic way, but that’s unfortunately not the case here. In fact, Chris Frisina‘s script is smart enough with its inevitable murder and ensuing insurance case to make us believe the film was produced with dramatic eyes and artistic hope. Alas, it ultimately falls short.

All the earmarks for this subgenre of trashy romance are present from the get-go. First you have the star: a Columbia-bound, engineering savant named »

Film Review: Careful What You Wish For

7 June 2016 5:49 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

If you've ever watched an “adult” movie, you know of the contrived situations, the cheesy soundtrack, and the gasping bodies.  You'd laugh if a lowly movie critic complained of that movie's plot inconsistencies, its horrible acting, or the needless dialogue.  So I won't blame you if you laugh while I tell you the many ways in which Nick Jonas's new film, the self-styled erotic thriller Careful What You Wish For, is not much more than glorified softcore.  Which is to say that you may very well really enjoy seeing it.  I certainly did.

The movie is a straight-up remake of the 1980s cult classic Body Heat, starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner.  Jonas, in all his heartthrob, beefcake glory, plays starry-eyed youth Doug (“Douggie”) Martin, who falls hard for an older woman, his neighbor's attractive wife Lena, played by the impossibly hot model Isabel Lucas.  The neighbor, Elliot Harper »

Knight of Cups is just the latest film out to make us feel sorry for glamorous people cursed with success

‘Where did I go wrong,” mopes Christian Bale’s character in the latest Terrence Malick film, Knight of Cups. It’s a question he broods over for two beautifully shot hours. But to the viewer, the answer seems simple: you didn’t go wrong! Your life is fantastic. You look like Christian Bale. You don’t have any health issues or addictions. You’re an in-demand screenwriter, and yet, instead of doing any work, you spend your days wandering around decadent Hollywood house parties and strolling along the beach in an Armani suit. The 15 Best Performances In Terrence Malick Films

3 March 2016 12:12 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

This week, after an absurdly long delay following its premiere at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups" sighs, whispers and twirls its way into theaters. Love it, loathe it, or end up somewhere in between (our review), there is no doubt that, like every Malick movie that has come before, it is the Malickiest to date. It has as astonishing cast: Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Brian Dennehy, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Teresa Palmer, Freida Pinto, Antonio Banderas, Isabel Lucas, Kevin Corrigan, Michael Wincott, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Clifton Collins Jr.Cherry Jones, Nick Offerman, and so on and so on — wait, is that Dan Harmon?  In a world of colossal star egos, where A-list careers are defined by towering awards-bait roles, it's amazing that Malick gets even Z-listers to show up when the standard punchline is "Congratulations! You've been cast in a Terrence Malick outtake! »

“Knight of Cups” gives audiences another Terrence Malick film to ponder

3 March 2016 10:17 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

There are very few filmmakers with a more singular style out there than the one and only Terrence Malick. This week, he offers up another unique cinematic experience with Knight of Cups, sure to be a divisive little movie. This is part of his new, slightly grittier fare, and it’s certainly going to get a response out of you. I’ve had a hit or miss relationship with Malick flicks previously, though I can say without question that this is unlike anything he has ever done before, at least in terms of what he’s trying to accomplish. I’ll share my personal thoughts below, but Malick fans will have reason to anticipate this release, that’s for sure. The film follows a successful writer named Rick (Christian Bale) as he indulges in Hollywood excess and wanders around, pontificating about his life to himself, as well as the audience, »

They Knew Him Well: Malick’s Sublime Existential Search for the Pearl

To many, Terrence Malick, perhaps the most revered of modern American auteurs, has ascended to his own idiosyncratic, esoteric doss, entering his most prolific decade in his forty years of filmmaking with confounding illustrations of pronounced existential ennui. Following 2011’s Palme d’Or winning The Tree of Life, he unleashed the belabored To the Wonder, cementing a pretentious predilection for wandering, rambling lost souls. His latest, Knight of Cups is certainly as impressionistic as these last two features, and hinges once again on a restless nomad, this time a faded Hollywood screenwriter hovering betwixt the sacred labors of his profession and the profane temptations of his surroundings. Inundated with notable celebrities, it’s too abstruse for a legion of starfuckers to fathom, much less righteously embrace its rather obvious critique of how completely commodifying an art form eventually »
