After an interesting — though lackluster overall — fall season of new broadcast TV, networks are set to unleash their midseason series.
What’s worth watching in that new crop of comedies and dramas? The sad truth: not much.
Luckily, I’m here to talk you through the best and the worst series that are poised to appear on your tube in the coming months — your DVR can only hold so much. Here’s your guide to what you should check out and those shows you should ignore:
1. The CW’s The Carrie Diaries (Premiere: Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. Est/5 p.m. Pst)
HBO’s hit series Sex and the City may have ended in 2004, but fashion and big dreams are still in vogue in The Carrie Diaries. Doe-eyed AnnaSophia Robb portrays the high school version of Carrie Bradshaw, the role that secured Sarah Jessica Parker »

What will viewers now do on Monday nights? That's easy: starting on January 14th, they should be watching The Carrie Diaries.
A precursor to Sex and the City, this teenage drama stars AnnaSophia Robb in the role made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker. It takes us back to 1984 and gives us a glimpse of a teenage Carrie Bradshow upon her first forays into the Big Apple.

Before it hits the air with its first episode on January 14, The CW's "The Carrie Diaries" already has something in common with HBO's "Sex and The City" - a lot of attention on the streets of New York City.
"Turn the corner and there are all the paparazzi there just snapping away, and tourists looking, even regular New Yorkers looking, staring, 'What's going on?' But it's part of the game," actress AnnaSophia Robb - who plays a young Carrie Bradshaw -- told Access Hollywood during our visit to The CW drama's set. "It's fun to see ...

Even though they have an Oscar under their belt for Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash will be at Park City next month as newbie directors, with their feature debut "The Way, Way Back" ready to unpsool. We got our first look at the movie in August, but now another new snap has arrived of Sam Rockwell, who stars in the flick alongside a pretty solid cast including Steve Carell, Maya Rudolph, AnnaSophia Robb, Allison Janney, Rob Corddry and more. Here's the synopsis: Duncan, an introverted 14-year-old, comes into his own over the course of a comedic summer when he forms unlikely friendships with the gregarious manager of a rundown water park and the misfits who work there. Just when we were lamenting the CV of Kathryn Hahn, one of those featured in our piece about great actors who need more work, along comes "Afternoon Delight. »

Colored tights. Headbands. Purple suits. Have you noticed a resurgence of these trends in the last six years? You can thank Gossip Girl, which has proven to be one of the most fashion-forward and stylish shows ever to hit the small screen. Behind all of the CW hit's iconic looks is costume designer Eric Daman, the man responsible for the signature styles of Blair (Leighton Meester) and Serena (Blake Lively), two of TV's most fashionable leading ladies. Though he's currently hard at work styling another iconic New York City fashion gal, 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) on the CW's The Carrie Diaries, Daman reveals his top ten favorite looks on Gossip Girl... Along with sharing his »
Exclusive: Taryn Manning (Hawaii Five-0) has been cast in a major 9-episode arc on Orange Is The New Black, Netflix’s new 13-episode hourlong series from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan. It centers on Piper (Taylor Schilling), an engaged Brooklynite whose decade-old relationship with a drug-runner (Laura Prepon) in college results in her arrest and multi-year detention in a federal penitentiary. Manning will play inmate Tiffany Doggett, a wild child from Waynesboro, Virginia. Better known as “Pennsatucky” for her Appalachian way of speaking, she’s a born-again Evangelical with underlying anger issues who doesn’t mix well with others. Manning, repped by Apa and manager Oren Segal, also recurred on FX’s Sons Of Anarchy. Up-and-comer Richard Kohnke has booked a recurring role on the CW’s upcoming drama The Carrie Diaries, a prequel to Sex And The City that centers on teen Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) living in the 1980s. »

Sex and the City is coming back to the small screen Jan. 14 in the form of CW prequel The Carrie Diaries, in which AnnaSophia Robb stars as young Carrie Bradshaw. We'll meet Carrie as a high school student and watch as she explores the two big themes of her life: love and fashion. We've had a look at the pilot for The Carrie Diaries and can spill about what we thought of the new series, and whether it lives up to its iconic HBO predecessor. What it's about: Carrie is 16 and lives in suburban Connecticut in the early '80s with her younger sister, Dorrit (Stefania Owen), and their father after their mother has recently passed away. Their family unit is still adjusting to the loss, but Carrie has a few things to take her mind off of home, like her best friends, including Mouse (Ellen Wong), a new crush »

A top-tier 2007 Blacklist script that would end up falling back into the laps of those who penned the project, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s debut behind the camera was completed midway this year and if the producers choose to go the festival route with The Way Way Back it could command a huge payday with the Little Miss Sunshine reunion of Steve Carell and Toni Collette. The dramedy also includes Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet, AnnaSophia Robb, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry and Allison Janney.
Gist: Over the course of his summer break, a teenager comes into his own thanks in part to the friendship he strikes up with one of the park’s managers.
Prediction: Premieres section but could see this wait until Tiff in the fall.

The Carrie Diaries is coming! AnnaSophia Robb and the gang will be premiering on January 14, and we are dying to see the new pseudo-prequel to Sex And The City. The Carrie Diaries trailer we’ve seen so far has given us Manhattan, hunky boys and Carrie’s high school buddy Maggie describing her first time thusly: “It was like putting a hot dog in a keyhole.” How flawless is that? Seriously, that could be in an actual line from a original Satc ep.
While it seems like the Carrie Diaries keeps a lot of elements of Satc, certain things have changed. For example, Carrie’s father will be appearing on the show, while die-hard Satc fans will remember that Mr. Bradshaw ducked out on Carrie and her mom when our protagonist was five. Frankly, we like the idea of Carrie having to tangle with her dad and mom for independence, »

The 1980s-set "Sex and the City" prequel "The Carrie Diaries" will debut on the CW on Monday, Jan. 14, the network announced. "90210," meanwhile, will move to its new 9 p.m. timeslot. And most CW shows will return from holiday break during that week. "The Carrie Diaries," one of the CW's most-anticipated shows, stars AnnaSophia Robb as 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw, who discovers the flashing lights of Manhattan as she copes with the death of her mother. She quickly discovers a vibrant and thrilling club scene. Based on the novels by Candace Bushnell, »

Carrie Bradshaw is back on the air in the CW's Sex and the City origin story The Carrie Diaries, where a 16-year-old version of Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) takes an internship at a fancy Manhattan law firm and falls in love with the city. Aww. Is this idea bearable?
Since the movie Sex and the City 2 bastardized the HBO series, which really didn't make any major missteps during its six-season run (aside from that totally cheesy finale), it seems like there's been a collective cultural dismissal of the original show's worth. I say we give the new series a try for three reasons:
1) The book series The Carrie Diaries is actually well-reviewed, and it's also written by S&Tc guru Candace Bushnell. The flavor of the new show may actually hew closer to the fun feel of the old show than we realize.
2) The show takes place in 1984, and if I'm not mistaken, »

It's almost time to slip on your Manolo Blahniks and get 'carried' away! The 'Sex and the City' prequel has a release date and we can hardly wait! Are you excited? The CW has issued a press release, announcing the premiere date for their highly anticipated new series -- The Carrie Diaries! The Carrie Diaries, starring AnnaSophia Robb as Carrie Bradshaw, will have its series premiere on Monday Jan. 14 at 8Pm Et, bumping 90210 to its new slot at 9Pm Et! According to The CW, the premise of the series goes as follows (just in case you're not up to par on the original series Sex and the City): "The Carrie Diaries takes place in 1984, where life is not easy for 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw. Since their mother passed away, Carrie’s younger sister Dorritt is more rebellious than ever, and their father Tom is overwhelmed with the responsibility »

Carrie Bradshaw will return to TV this January. The CW announced "The Carrie Diaries," the "Sex and the City" prequel series about a teenaged Carrie Bradshaw played by AnnaSophia Robb, will premiere on Monday, January 14 at 8 p.m. Et.

Set in 1984, "The Carrie Diaries" follows 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw as she adjusts to life after the death of her mother. Her younger sister Dorritt (Stefania Owen) is on a rebellious kick and their dad Tom (Matt Letscher) is overwhelmed. At its upfront in May, the CW announced that The Carrie Diaries will succeed departing Gossip Girl in the Monday 9 Pm slot in midseason. Now the network has tweaked its plans, setting the Sex And The City prequel series for a January 14 premiere at 8 Pm. The newbie will swap slots with veteran 90210, which will slide to 9 Pm. I hear that the rationale behind the decision is that, like fall breakout Arrow, Carrie Diaries will be supported by a big marketing push, which may make it a better 8 Pm anchor just like Arrow is on Wednesdays, lifting veteran Supernatural with it. A sneak peak from The Carrie Diaries will be featured during the December 17 two-hour series finale of Gossip Girl. The CW will formally announce the rest of its midseason schedule at a later date, but the majority of its lineup is expected to return to originals the week of January »

The CW recently released the trailer for their prequel series to Sex and the City, The Carrie Diaries. The show follows Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) in high school, right after she's lost her mother and gets an internship in New York. This is typically up my alley, but after watching the pilot over the summer, I found it a little dull, but not without potential. And as Alyssa Rosenberg smartly says over at Slate, there is major potential for The Carrie Diaries to capture the Sex and the City audience in a feminist and subversive way which would be new for mainstream teen television show. The Carrie Diaries will premiere in January 2013. Before she was Carrie Bradshaw….well, she was still Carrie Bradshaw in 1984, but she was completely different from the savvy New Yorker we know from HBO's hit series Sex and the City. In this trailer for the CW's The Carrie Diaries, we meet Carrie (played wonderfully by AnnaSophia Robb) back when she was just a teenager navigating something much more treacherous than the big city: high school. We've seen the pilot episode, and we are so in love with this series already that not even a 2 1/2-minute trailer can accurately sum up how fun, heartwarming and smart this show really is. But watch the video anyway and let us know what you think! The Carrie Diaries premieres on the CW this »
