Played cricket locally for Long Ashton CC, based near Bristol.
He was a left handed opening batsman who played county cricket for
Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire, captained Orange Free State in
South Africa and represented England in 25 Test matches. He is now an
International match referee.
He was educated at Colston's Bristol and St Paul's Cheltenham.
He scored 21,892 runs in 340 first-class matches at an average of
38.07, with 50 centuries and took 189 catches. He also scored 1,661
runs in 25 test matches at an average of 39.54, with six centuries and
took ten catches.
