7 Great Movies You Probably Missed in 2016

27 June 2016 2:46 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

As with almost any year, 2016 has had its fair share of good and bad movies. We are right in the middle of the summer movie season, and it feels like there are way too many movies coming out every week. It is becoming really hard to keep up with them all. Either that, or a truly excellent movie may get little or no attention when during its initial launch. That being the case, it is really easy for some truly great movies to slip through the cracks.

In terms of what movies people are seeing this year, it isn't exactly a surprise. Though, one look at the Box Office Mojo 2016 top grossing movies chart, and there are a few things that weren't expected back in January. Disney is having another astonishing year, with Captain America: Civil War having grossed $1.147 billion worldwide, good enough for the top spot overall. Zootopia was expected to be a hit, »

The new film doesn’t come out until October but we’ve seen quite a bit of promotional activity surrounding the film over the last few days, following the bunch of new posters that introduced us to all of the characters which debuted on Thursday.

2016 Emmy Ballot Oddities: ‘Doctor Who’ in the Running, ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Goes Down to the Wire

16 June 2016 11:40 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The race for the 2016 Emmys has officially begun. Voting for the TV Academy’s top honors is now open until June 27, and ballots for all categories are available for viewing.

We already knew about some of the season’s more unusual contenders — like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s joint submission as guest actress for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” and Johnny Depp’s bid for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for “Funny Or Die Presents Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie.”

But Variety perused some of the top categories to find more inevitable oddities, including surprise inclusions (“Doctor Who”!) and exclusions (sorry, “Manhattan”).

• HBO is cutting it awfully close to the wire with the finales of three of their biggest Emmy favorite shows. The final episodes of the current seasons of “Game of Thrones,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Veep” all air June 26, roughly 24 hours before Emmy voting closes. »

New Storks Trailer Brings Cuteness Overload and Big Laughs

16 June 2016 8:17 AM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Featuring a voice cast of comedy genius like Andy Samberg, Kelsey Garmer, Keegen Micheal-Key, and Jordan Peele, Warner Bros. may have another winner on their hands with new animated feature Storks, which sees the famed baby delivery service move away from diapers, but that changes when the company’s top stork (Samberg) and the only human on Stork Mountain, Tulip (Katie Crown), must make their first ever baby-drop off. Anything involving cartoon babies will definitely see the cuteness factor dialled all the way up, but thankfully this looks hilarious to boot. No doubt Warner Bros. will be taking it’s cue The Lego Movie in terms of cross-audience humour, and from the trailer above they seem to have found the sweet spot. Released: 23rd September (U.S.)/ 14th October (Irl/U.K.) »

Storks Trailer #3 Flies in with a Very Special Delivery

16 June 2016 7:53 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Animated adventures have been big at the box office over the past decade, but it's a genre usually dominated by Pixar, Disney and DreamWorks. Though Warner Bros. has also had its fare share of CG hits, the studio returns this fall with its most ambitious comedy yet! Storks is in theaters this September. Today, we have the third exciting trailer along with the official one-sheet poster, which asks you to 'Find your flock!'

Storks arrives in 3D and 2D in select theaters on September 23. Nicholas Stoller, best known for such raunchy comedies as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, Neighbors and this summer's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, takes his first stab at making a family movie everyone can enjoy. He directs alongside Doug Sweetland. The duo are working from a script Nicholas Stoller wrote himself. Stoller is also producing alongside Brad Lewis. Executive Producers include 21 Jump Street directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are joined by Glenn Ficarra, John Requa and Jared Stern.

Leading the ensemble voice cast are Andy Samberg and Kelsey Grammer. They are joined by a vast array of talent from the world of film and television including Katie Crown, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Danny Trejo, and Ty Burrell. Iconic actress Jennifer Aniston finally makes a return to the animated world with her first voice role since taking on the 1999 classic Iron Giant. There will also be a few surprises to discover along the way.

Storks imagines what happened to the folklore of yesteryear in an age when social media allows everyone in the delivery room. These once proud birds used to deliver babies. Now, they deliver packages for a global internet retail giant. Junior, the company's top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl.

Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop, in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks' true mission in the world.&#160Along with the new trailer and poster, Warner Bros. is also introducing a few new treats for fans to get excited about the movie.

The studio has officially launched the Storks company site, which takes audiences inside Stork mountain. Now you can get an inside look at the inner workings of the Cornerstor at www.InsideStorkMountain.com. There is also the exciting Stork Delivery Dash game. Wondering if you have what it takes to soar to the top of Stork Mountain? Storks Delivery Dash lets you join the exciting world of winged delivery service. Fly through the neighborhood and deliver packages by air with flawless timing and stork-like precision. And remember to watch out for obstacles! Cornerstone relies on dependability! But before you get all wrapped up in that fun, be sure to check out the new poster and trailer, which promises to be a lot of fun on its own! In theaters only this fall.

The cast of Storks has found a new Friend. Jennifer Aniston is among the voice cast for the upcoming animated movie, EW reported. Storks writer/co-director Nicholas Stoller told EW the film is “a love letter to parenthood,” inspired by his experiences raising two girls. Also lending their voices to Storks are Kelsey Grammer, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Ty Burrell, and Katie Crown. Birth Control, Bernie Sanders Provide Comic Fodder for Sketch Series Contenders

15 June 2016 10:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

On the sketch front, master of self-effacement Amy Schumer (Comedy Central’s “Inside Amy Schumer”) continues to shine a spotlight on scenarios and subject matter all too common among American women — clothes shopping when nothing in the store fits even when you’re a normal and healthy size 10, ageism and sexism in the entertainment industry, and lack of access to birth control — while stablemate “Key & Peele” (in its final season) and IFC’s “Portlandia” continue to make fun of everything we like to make fun of: Oregon hipsters, overpriced vegan restaurants, and marital infidelity.

Over at Netflix, sketch icons Bob Odenkirk and David Cross revived their “Mr. Show” magic with an event series and “The Characters” added a new twist to the stories of funny favorites.

The 41st season of “Saturday Night Live” featured some of the most uproarious presidential campaign skits to date, with Larry David playing a better Bernie Sanders than Sanders himself. Bill Hader and Fred Armisen mocked docus in style with “Documentary Now,” Jason Ritter and Greg Kinnear turned up on “Drunk History” poking fun at paleontologists, and “Billy on the Street” showcased Anna Kendrick in a hilarious bit about dating app Tinder.

‘Jane the Virgin’ Star Jaime Camil to Host TCA Awards

14 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Jane the Virgin” favorite Jaime Camil has been tapped to host the 32nd Annual Television Critics Association Awards, which will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday, August 6.

Camil will kick off the evening with an original opening monologue, before handing things over to the critics, who will announce the night’s big winners. As an added bonus, the exclusive event will include a cameo by beloved telenovela superstar Rogelio De La Vega, who will be on-hand to fill in for Camil whenever the host needs to take a quick break. Awards will be presented in a wide variety of categories and genres, such as news and information; youth; drama; reality; and comedy, as North America’s top TV critics gather to celebrate outstanding television programs of the 2015-2016 season.

“With his natural charm and quick wit, Jaime Camil has quickly become one of the most likeable personalities on television,” said TCA President Amber Dowling. “Camil, along with his beloved alter ego Rogelio De La Vega, are the perfect complement to add some sizzle to this special evening. The Television Critics Association is truly honored to have him on board, as we come together to celebrate 32 years of the TCA Awards.”

Camil is a Critics’ Choice, Imagen, and Teen Choice Award nominee and has won countless global film and theater awards throughout his 20-year plus career. He has starred in a multitude of telenovelas, including hits “Qué pobres tan ricos” and “Por ella soy Eva,” and award-winning films such as “Pulling Strings,” “200 Cartas” and “7 Dias” – which earned him Best Supporting Actor honors from the Premios Ace and the Mexican Cinema Journalists respectively. He has recorded four platinum selling albums and has led many musicals in his native Mexico City including “West Side Story,” “Hook,” “Aladdin,” “El diluvio que viene” and more. In addition to “Jane the Virgin,” he can be seen on Broadway starring as Billy Flynn in “Chicago.”

Rogelio De La Vega shot to fame in 2013, capturing hearts across the country in his smoldering portrayal of Santos, the president of the fictional country of North Ecuaduras, who braves the high seas, battles villainous pirates, and woos the beautiful Blanca in the hit Telemasivo Studios telenovela “The Passions of Santos.” The series was the longest-running telenovela in the studio’s history, having amassed over 175 episodes — thanks, in large part, to De La Vega’s undeniable charisma and brilliant acting. De La Vega’s performance was widely acclaimed by critics and viewers, alike, earning him the honor of Best Actor at the prestigious Paloma Awards in 2014, as well as a legion of devoted 6.3 million Twitter followers. In addition to “Santos” De La Vega has appeared in the sci-fi space opera “Pasión Intergalactica,” and currently can be seen in the lead role on the new time-travel drama “Tiago a Través del Tiempo.”

Camil is the latest in a long line of stars to emcee the TCA Awards; past hosts include James Corden, Terry Crews, Bryan Cranston, Ellen DeGeneres, Conan O’Brien, Drew Carey, Craig Ferguson, Wanda Sykes, the Smothers Brothers, Nick Offerman, Dax Shepard, Key & Peele, and Bob Newhart, among others.

The TCA nominates and votes on awards as an organization, and the process is not open to submissions. 12 awards will be presented for programming that has made an impact this past TV season. The TCA also bestows a Heritage Award trophy to one long-standing program that has culturally or socially influenced society, and a Career Achievement Award.

Methodology:

ListenFirst Digital Audience Ratings (Dar) for Television are a raw aggregate of daily engagements based on owned, earned and organic consumer behavior on Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Tumblr, Wikipedia and YouTube. These engagements encompass metrics pertaining to audience growth, page/profile views, page-level and post-level interactions, hashtag volume and Wikipedia page views for all television program pages (which provides a proxy for organic search volume).

Organic conversation volume is calculated based on the use of official hashtags, as well as those hashtags submitted directly from programmers and distributors. Only hashtags where conversation can be isolated to a specific television program are included in the rating.

The Variety weekly leaderboards for television represent the 7-day (Monday – Sunday) sum total of Dar – TV for all episodic programming, in and out of season, from the most popular programmers (Broadcast, Cable, & Streaming Services). Sports, live events, short-form content and other non-episodic programming are excluded from this ranking cohort but available to be rated directly by ListenFirst Media.

The Broadcast and Cable/Streaming Originals leaderboards each surface the respective top ten primetime programs. The Late Night leaderboard surfaces the top five late night / variety genre programs, from across the programming universe. Streaming Originals are considered primetime cable programming.

The Trending Leaderboard surfaces the three programs that tracked the largest relative growth in Dar – TV (from the previous 7-day measurement period), and are also in the top 25% based on absolute Dar – TV, from across the programming universe.

ListenFirst monitors the official digital account owned by the program on each aforementioned platform (except for Wikipedia, where the title-specific profile is considered official). Only the U.S. version of a program’s digital presence is monitored; for platforms that support regional profiles like Facebook, the “Global” profile is considered the U.S. profile. Only profiles that can be attributed to the specific program contribute to the rating (i.e. engagements that happen on the profile facebook.com/LouieFX are tracked, while engagements that happen on facebook.com/FX are not). For YouTube, in addition to any program-specific presence, content related to the program in question that originated on the parent company’s official YouTube channel is considered.

Note: Twitter data has been removed from Digital Audience Ratings (Dar) for Television as of 10/7/2014.
