See Pharrell Battle Jimmy Fallon in Song-Naming Challenge

27 June 2017 5:47 AM, PDT | | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Pharrell Williams squared off against Jimmy Fallon in a musical battle of wits on The Tonight Show on Monday.

Their "Name That Song Challenge" followed straightforward rules. The Roots pick a tune – this set was heavy on 1980s radio hits – and play it one instrument at a time, usually leading with a synthesizer line. The contestants are equipped with buzzers; whoever rings first gets to name the track.

Fallon dominated the first half of the game, quickly identifying A-Ha's "Take on Me" and Toto's "Africa." He chortled with glee after »

8 June 2017 6:11 AM, PDT | | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Rae Sremmurd celebrated Swae Lee's birthday with a performance of their new SremmLife 2 track "Swang" on The Tonight Show Wednesday. Swae and his co-emcee Slim Jxmmi took the stage with the Roots, who provided the song's bass-heavy beat and syrupy synths.

Swae Lee commandeered the cut, jumping easily between spitting bars to crooning the end of the defiant hook in his surprisingly delicate falsetto: "Hop out, drop, top, got y'all talkin' I need it right now/ Cash in the air, yeah, what goes up gotta come down."

Anne Hathaway & Jimmy Fallon Sing Weeknd, P!nk Songs Using Google Translate Lyrics

18 April 2017 9:54 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

Anne Hathaway isn't afraid to sing a little tune. But the Les Miserables and Colossal star had no idea what she was getting into when she agreed to play a game of "Google Translate Songs" with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. The premise was simple enough: take some hits and put them through the sometimes unreliable app.

Hathaway went first, trying her hand at that smash song by The Weeknd, "My Front is Not Felt" (aka "Can't Feel My Face"). With the Roots providing the track, Hathaway sang the following nonsense chorus: "In your presence my front is not »

Watch Ed Sheeran Perform 'Shape of You' With Toy Instruments on 'Fallon'

28 February 2017 6:58 AM, PST | | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Ed Sheeran teamed up with Jimmy Fallon and the Roots for a ramshackle version of his hit "Shape of You" played with toy instruments on The Tonight Show Monday.

Sheeran pumped a banana-shaped shaker for extra percussion and sang over a mix of xylophone, kazoo and ukulele. The busy arrangement was a far cry from the sparse pop of the studio version of "Shape of You," but the performance still captured the song's playfulness, especially as the Roots hummed the song's rumbling backing vocals.

Watch the Roots' Frank Sinatra-Inspired Freestyle on 'Fallon'

8 February 2017 8:44 AM, PST | | See recent Rolling Stone news »

The Roots invoked Frank Sinatra, Chic and Christopher Cross during a freestyle-themed portion of The Tonight Show on Tuesday.

Jimmy Fallon headed into the crowd to mine source material for his trusty house band. With Valentine's Day and the NBA All-Star Game around the corner, Fallon asked audience members to answer hypothetical-yet-topical questions: "If you could make up your own candy heart, what would it say?" "If you owned your own basketball team, what would it be called?"

The Roots' Black Thought came up with a few whimsical lyrics based around the answers. »

For the game, the four participants paired off to throw footballs at glass squares featuring prints of Stewart and Fallon's faces. The Super Bowl-appropriate game led to some jokes from Big Sean about having to "throw balls at [Fallon's] face." After a tough start from Stewart, whose first throw bounced off the glass, »
