Bollywood Box-Office Report Of The Week

27 March 2015 12:37 AM, PDT | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

This week will see the release of the Shadab Mirza directed Barkhaa and Karan Raj Kanwar's Yahaan Sabki Lagi Hai. Both the mentioned films don't carry much hype and trade predicts that the audience will prefer to watch the older releases.

Last week saw a three cornered box-office battle between Shemaroo Entertainment's Hunterrr, Ab Infosoft Creation Dozakh-in Search Of Heaven and Jap Films' Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend. The opening round was comprehensively won by Hunterrr which netted around 5.50 crore while Dilliwaali Zalim Girlfriend lagged far behind with around 2 crore, both during the opening weekend. The third release Dozakh-in Search Of Heaven was out rightly rejected. From the three releases, it is just Hunterrr that has some chances of breaking even, but for that a half decent second week is a must.

Moving on, after a creditable opening weekend (13.50 crore), Anushka Sharma's debut production venture, NH10, maintained very well during the weekdays as well, »

Bollywood Box-Office Report Of The Week

19 March 2015 2:11 AM, PDT | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

This Friday's major releases include Shemaroo Entertainment's Hunterrr, Ab Infosoft Creation Dozakh In Search Of Heaven and Jap Films' Dilliwaali Zalim Girlfriend. As things stand, thanks to some catchy music and innovative promotion, the front runner is likely to be Dilliwaali Zalim Girlfriend.

The prominent release of last week, Anushka Sharma's NH10, started on a somewhat somber note, but picked up steam on the following days, netting a creditable 13.50 crore during the opening weekend. The film is also maintaining well during the weekdays, and if it continues to hold, NH10 may end up as a successful debut for Anushka Sharma!

Moving on, the Mallika Sherawat starrer, Dirty Politics, could not make a mark except at some single screen cinemas collecting 50 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.15 lakhs from Surat, 3 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 5.15 lakhs from Rajkot, 5 lakhs from Pune, 1.75 lakhs from Nasik, »

Yrf's Dum Laga Ke Haisha is the first hit of the year!

16 March 2015 3:41 AM, PDT | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

It was generally expected that that January 2015 itself would surely witness a couple of successes if not hits, but that was not the case. The first major release, Tevar, flattered to deceive and turned out to be a failure. The second biggie, Akshay Kumar's Baby was off to some brilliant reviews and extremely positive feedback, but could not make it to the hit mark, more so due to the heavy involved costs. Having said that, Baby is the biggest grosser of the year, falling short of the century mark by just 4-5 crore. The film though is an above average success.

The next two probable hits were megastar Amitabh's Shamitabh and Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur. While Shamitabh turned to be a huge failure, the Varun-Nawaz starrer Badlapur (still running) managed a semi-hit status with an over 50 crore haul from India and $2m from the overseas.

Bollywood Box-Office Report Of The Week

10 March 2015 11:20 PM, PDT | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

The coming Friday will once again witness multiple releases- Anushka Sharma's Nh 10, Dharam Sankat Mein (still to be confirmed) and Adhyayan Suman's Lucknowi Ishq. While the front runner will obviously be NH10, the two week old Dum Laga Ke Haisha will again prove to be a handful for the new releases.

All the new releases of last week, Lalit Modi's Dirty Politics, Vrg Motion Pictures Pvt. Ltd's Badmashiyaan- Fun Never Ends and Ganesh Acharya's Hey Bro, failed to make any headway, barring the Mallika Sherawat starrer Dp. Coming to the numbers, Dirty Politics managed 4.50-5.0 crore during the opening weekend and may just scrape through to safety. The remaining two releases, Badmashiyaan-fun Never Ends and Hey Bro, were well below the 1 crore mark and have more or less been rejected by the audience.

Box Office – Badlapur finds appreciation as well as moolah at theaters

23 February 2015 6:04 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Last week it was predicted in this column that Badlapur would take a 30%-40% for itself and then would see gradual rise in collections with every passing show, owing to (expected) good word of mouth. This is exactly how it unfolded for the Sriram Raghavan directed affair as Badlapur managed all around positive reviews for itself. The buzz had peaked at just the right time and by the time Badlapur hit the screens, its target audience had warmed up enough to catchy what was in the offering.

This was reflected in the opening day collections of over 7 crore, which was good considering the fact that a) Badlapur is an adult rated film, b) It has a dark theme to it, c) Varun Dhawan’s target audience are kids/teenagers, whereas Badlapur is for mature audience and most importantly d) patrons have become more conscious than ever before to spend any »

Badlapur Movie Review

The axe forgets but the tree remembers – African proverb

Badlapur is a story about revenge. Directed by Agent Vinod’s director Sriram Raghavan, and starring Varun Dhawan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam and Divya Dutta, this thriller drama narrates the story of Raghu (Dhawan), and how his life falls into pieces when his wife and son are killed in a bank robbery. One of the robbers, Liak (Siddiqui), is caught by the police and sent to jail, but his partner escapes with the money. Filled with anger and distress, Raghu devotes his life to take revenge on those who destroyed his world and will wait 15 years to fulfil his revenge, his “badla”.

Raghavan put together a very dynamic story. From the opening scene until the end, the story is well-paced, with just enough time to assimilate what is happening before moving onto the next plot twist. All characters, from »

How the film Badlapur got its title

20 February 2015 2:00 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur, a dark thriller produced by Dinesh Vijan of Maddock films, created a whole lot of curiosity around its title. Why is the movie named Badlapur? Well, apparently the story behind its title is rather interesting.

The film is largely based on revenge – “Badla”. It’s about a man Raghu (played by Varun Dhawan) who sets out to take revenge after being wronged and undergoes a transition during the course of the story, leading to “badlav”(change).

And those familiar with Mumbai are aware that there is a station named Badlapur on the Central Railway. It’s heard that Badlapur used to be one of the stations where the trains would change tracks. This aspect has a massive role to play in the film as the station features in the backdrop when the plot undergoes a change.

The newly launched song titled ‘Badla Badla’ captures the powerful and unforgiving character of Raghu played by Varun Dhawan. “The song is not conventional one, its hard-core and is sung by Vishal Dadlani. Varun Dhawans Badlapur is a Rs 25 crore film - The complete details

19 February 2015 2:13 AM, PST | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

In the times of Twitter world turning trade experts, anything and everything is being accepted on face value, as long as it is sensational. Even though Varun Dhawan had made it crystal clear that Badlapur is his most cost effective as well as quickest shot film ever, there have been rumors of all kind floating around the Sriram Raghavan film. One such story making the rounds is around the film's budget. "It is being said that the film has cost Rs. 50 crores to the makers (Eros and Dinesh Vijan). This is sheer nonsense and doesn't carry any basis whatsoever. The film has been made at around Rs. 16 crores with Rs. 9 crores set aside for P&A (Print and Advertising). This comes to around Rs. 25 crores, which is just perfect for a film like Badlapur which is commercial in its own way," informs our well-placed source. Though no one associated with »

Box Office – Badlapur to bring Varun in a new light

18 February 2015 11:00 PM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

It is going to be an interesting weekend at the box office. Badlapur hits the screens and what works for it is the fact that the promotion has been absolutely bang on target. Despite the fact that it features Varun Dhawan in the lead, there has been no attempt made to overtly commercialize it by turning it into a quintessential Bollywood potboiler. Hence, there has been no attempt made to add on item number or sensationalize it by bringing in elements that are typically plugged in by PR channels. As a result, Badlapur pretty much acts as a film where you are expected to get what has been promised.

The film is aiming for a target audience which is not looking for yet another bubblegum entertainer from Varun but instead waiting to see what Sriram Raghavan, director of films like Ek Haseena Thi and Johnny Gaddaar, has to offer with »

Censors knock off abusive words in Badlapur

16 February 2015 2:38 AM, PST | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

The intrinsically violent Badlapur which tells the tale of a man getting even with his wife's killer has been cleared without any visual cuts. However, the axe has fallen on the 'F' word, not once but twice over. Says a source, "While the violent visual content of Badlapur has been given a go-ahead by the Cbfc they have objected to three abusive words which have now been deleted." Apparently, the 'F' word has been knocked off twice. The word 'f..k' has been replaced by 'hell' and the word 'f..king' has been muted. Elsewhere the Hindi abuse 'chutiya' had to be replaced by 'yeda'. Director Sriram Raghavan seems fine with the cuts. "The language is commensurate with the characters' state of mind. These are not your average dinner-table conversationalists. Nawazuddin is a killer. Varun Dhawan is a man on a rampage. Huma Qureshi plays a prostitute." »
