On December 26, 2010, Teena Marie was found dead in her home by her daughter, Alia Rose Brockert. Teena died early Sunday morning. It was reported that she died from natural causes. She suffered a grand mal seizure a month prior to her death.
Her album "La Dona" (Ca$h Money Classics/Universal Records 986 236) was released, her first album of new songs since "Passion Play" (Sarai Records) in 1994. the latter was released independently. The former debuted at #3 on the R&B chart and at #6 on the pop chart. [May 2004]
Her album "Sapphire" (Ca$h Money Classics/Universal Records 985 389) debuted at #3 on the R&B chart and at #24 on the pop chart. [May 2006]
On June 9, 2009, her album "Congo Square" was her first CD on the Stax Records label. The album followed previous CDs on Ca$h Money Classics ("La Dona" and "Sapphire"). This set debuted at #3 and #20 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop and 200 albums charted, respectively.
At the time of her death, Teena Marie had been in the process of completing her album "Beautiful". The album was finished posthumously by her daughter Alia Rose Brockert and released on January 15, 2013.
Following her untimely death, she was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. She was cremated and her ashes were given to the family members.
Attended Santa Monica City College where she studied English Literature.
Attended and graduated from Venice High School in Los Angeles, California.
Her ethnic ancestry was Irish, Italian, Portuguese and Native American.
