- Co-founded the Even Dozen Jug Band, he played washboard in the band. They recorded an album in 1964 for Elektra Records.
- Co-founded the Blues Project, who recorded three albums and broke up after playing the Monterey Pop Festival.

- Produced two albums for Lou Reed ("Sally Can't Dance" and "Rock 'n' Roll Animal"), an album for Elliott Murphy ("Night Lights") and three albums for Ireland's Horslips.
- In 1977 he became East Coast Director of A&R and later Vice President of Mercury Records.
- His memoir "Blood, Sweat, and My Rock 'n' Roll Years: Is Steve Katz a Rock Star?" was published by Lyons Press in 2015.
