Jimmy Kimmel, ABC Prevail in Court Over Rabbi 'Made to Look Foolish'

22 December 2011 6:17 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

ABC and late night host Jimmy Kimmel have prevailed over an orthodox Jewish man who claimed his image was used without consent in a Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment that poked fun at basketball superstar LeBron James' 2010 free agency "decision." On the show, Kimmel made light of TMZ reports that summer that James had met with Rabbi Yishayahu Yosef Pinto for business advice. Kimmel claimed that he himself had met with Rabbi Pinto for advice and showed the audience a video of the exchange. But Kimmel never actually met Rabbi Pinto. And the video didn't even show Rabbi Pinto. Instead, Kimmel had spliced together YouTube

Rabbi Loses Court Case Saying Jimmy Kimmel Made Him Look Foolish

ABC late-night talk host Jimmy Kimmel of Jimmy Kimmel Live! remained in the news this week after generating controversy asking his viewers to submit videos of their kids unwrapping prank Christmas presents like an onion, a half-eaten sandwich or an old banana. The videos were a follow-up to Kimmel’s popular Halloween prank teasing kids about eating their Trick-or-Treat candy. Another video gag landed Kimmel in court recently when he used YouTube footage of Rabbi Dovid Sondik, known as the “Flying Rabbi” for his hyper behavior, to portray Rabbi Yishayahu Yosef Pinto, who met and gave business advice to basketball star LeBron James. »

Finally, Proof That Comic Sans Makes Everything Better

9 December 2011 2:00 PM, PST | BestWeekEver | See recent BestWeekEver news »

As any professional graphic designer, typist, or human with eyes and Style can tell you, Comic Sans makes anything better: Movie Posters, bitter letters to departed LeBron James, and most of all, logos. The ingeniously simple Comic Sans Project has taken this theory to the sans-treme, replacing the fonts in popular advertising and cultural logos with Comic Sans to prove just how much more pleasing to the eye and hilarious they instantly become: See? There’s no telling how successful McDonald’s or Star Wars could’ve been if they’d only spent more time on their logo-fonts. Check out the rest of their logos at the Comic Sans Project Tumblr. Though really – this is still up for debate? I’m pretty sure everyone with any degree of design acumen knows that all fonts always should be comic sans. Why am I not writing this in comic sans right now, »

TV Review: The Office 8.9, “Mrs. California”

2 December 2011 12:38 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I’m going to go out on a bit of a limb here and say that while “Mrs. California” was of course not a return to form for The Office, it was a good example of how the series might define itself in this new Michael-less era. The series will never again be what it once was, even if Carell were still leading the cast, however, with him gone the show has been forced to reestablish itself and has thus far done so mostly unsuccessfully with “Doomsday” being the only other exception I can really think of besides this episode.

True to their word last episode, the show did not spend time attempting to distinguish Andy from Michael and although there were tiny moments where I felt Ed Helms was delivering lines the way he thought Michael would dealing with his former superiors, the show benefited »

Harvard studies LeBron James, Lady Gaga, Tom Cruise, Radiohead and more

22 November 2011 3:09 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

One of Harvard Business School's more popular classes, Strategic Marketing in Creative Industries, gives students the chance to study pop culture success stories. Miami Heat forward LeBron James cooperated with the school when they approached him about being a case study, giving the research team access to his marketing choices.

The Boston Globe reports that the class also features case studies on Lady Gaga, Tom Cruise, Radiohead, the Real Madrid soccer team, the NFL as a whole, and more. The class "gives students virtual backstage passes to Hollywood, to the highest levels of European soccer, to arena concert tours, to all the important places where the cult of celebrity reigns and represents potential revenue."

They study everything from James' McDonalds deal (above) to Shaquille O'Neal's critically trashed Shaq Fu video game. It's not surprising that professor Anita Elberse is seen as a "rock star" in the eyes of Harvard Business School students. »

Mocking

LeBron James' playoff woes has become as integral a part of basketball as dribbling or Marv Albert. Stop us if you've heard this one:

A man asks LeBron James for change for a parking meter. LeBron gives the man 75 cents and walks away. The man shouts, "Hey, LeBron! I need a dollar!" LeBron replies "sorry, man, I don't have a fourth quarter."

Boom. But we can't even make a layup so who cares what we say. However, when Los Angeles Laker and all-time great Magic Johnson starts ripping you? That's gotta hurt.

At an on-campus appearance Saturday (Oct. 15) at the University at Albany, Magic starting laying into King James:

"There's going to always be great players in basketball. There's going to always be guys who win championships in the NBA, except LeBron..."

The Miami Heatification of the Action Genre

5 October 2011 10:05 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

According to Todd Brown over at Twitch the franchise formerly known as "The Fast and the Furious" is not content to rest on its laurels. Having every actor who'd appeared in the franchise return for "Fast Five" and now for "Fast Six" and "Fast Seven" wasn't enough. Brown reports that Universal's "entering into preliminary conversations with Jason Statham to explore the possibility of the action star joining one or both films."

Think about this for a moment. They might not all reappear in "Fast Six," but "Fast Five" already featured Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Paul "I Don't Have a Nickname" Walker. That's already a bounty of beefcake. Now you're going to cram Jason Statham in there as well? Don't get me wrong -- I'm an irrationally big fan of Jason Statham. But how are you going to divvy up all the screentime for these guys? »

I recently spoke with Pam Grier for the Blu-ray release of Jackie Brown on October 4. I also asked the actress about her role in The Man with the Iron Fist, which marks the feature directorial debut of RZA. Here's what Pam Grier had to say below about The Man with the Iron Fist.

"I play RZA's mother, in the mid-1800s. He went to Quentin and said, 'I want to direct.' The next thing you know, he's calling me to work with him in China, to play his mother. It was wonderful and, of course, Wu Tang Clan, their work is just so poetic. He's an amazing director. My character gives up her freedom to save her son. It basically starts out his journey, to a new land. It was very, very moving. Shooting in China was extraordinary. The people were so warm and so smart. My interpreter, who »

10 Great Movies Featuring At Least 5 Oscar Nominated Actors

3 October 2011 12:25 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Last summer, LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade all somehow ended up on the Miami Heat, and ninety percent of the general public responded by hatefully rooting against them. I.m not sure there will ever be another time in Dirk Nowitzki.s life when as many non-Mavs fans pray for his wild, off-balance fadeaways to go in, but that.s the nature of sports. We tend to despise organizations that buy too much talent. Thankfully for Ides Of March, movies work oppositely. What.s the first question people always ask when you tell them you saw a great movie they.ve never heard of? Who.s in it? I.m just as guilty as anyone else. Spend five minutes haranguing me about the brilliance of some new independent film, and I.ll get around to watching it eventually. Tell me a new movie starring Kevin Spacey and Daniel »
