Netflix has acquired global rights to David Pablos’ “Las Elegidas” from Mundial, the joint sales venture of Stuart Ford’s Im Global and Canana, the production-sales company of Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna and Pablo Cruz.
Produced by Cruz, Pablos’ breakthrough movie recently scored 13 nominations for Mexico’s Ariel Academy Awards. “The Chosen Ones” was also the first Spanish-speaking title to be announced last year for the Cannes Festival, where it screened in Un Certain Regard. It will bow on Netflix from May 8. Global deal obviously does not not include territories licensed by Mundial. Arp Selection, one of France’s premier art-house distributors, acquired French rights to “The Chosen Ones” in the run-up to Cannes last-year, for instance.

Starz has announced it it developing the Maleficio TV show, with Televisa USA. Mexican television writer and producer, Mauricio Katz, has been tapped as showrunner. The announcement was made during today's TCA winter press tour presentations.
This new supernatural thriller follows Don Enrique De Martino, a Mexican businessman who has made a deal with the Devil. Showrunner Katz will write and produce. Ep Pedro Peirano will co-write the first episode with Katz.

Starz is looking to boost its profile with Latino viewers. The premium cabler has set three development prospects revolving around Hispanic themes and creative auspices that include Televisa USA and “The Blair Witch Project’s” Haxan Films.
The focus on Hispanic audiences comes after Starz has found broad success with shows rooted in African-American experiences, including the drama “Power,” which ranks as Starz’s most-watched original series, and comedy “Survivor’s Remorse.”
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht has been vocal about the void in premium cable programming featuring diverse casts and creative teams. The Hispanic initiative was unveiled Friday morning during Starz’s presentation at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
