‘The Fighter’ & ‘The King’s Speech’ Lead Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees

16 December 2010 10:09 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Today the nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was released. The King’s Speech and The Fighter received the most nominations, with four each. Thankfully the Guild seems to know what they are doing unlike The Golden Globes who pretty much screwed up all the nominations.

The nominees here are usually a very strong indication of how the acting award nominees will play out at the Oscars. King’s Speech has long been an Oscar favourite, but David O. Russell’s The Fighter has gained considerable steam in the past few weeks. Last year, 19 out of 20 SAG nominees went to the Oscars as well so you can be sure that The Fighter and King’s Speech will get a best picture nomination. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 20th. See the complete list below.

SAG Nominees Announced - Chris Colfer Up for Lifetime Achievement Award

16 December 2010 7:12 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Okay, totally kidding about the Colfer Lifetime Achievement Award thing - that will be going to Ernest Borgnine. But does it seem to you that the kid who plays Kurt Hummel is getting an awful lot of awards season love? (And wouldn't McHale's Navy have been so much better with him in it?)

The latest outpouring of Colfer acclaim comes from the Screen Actors Guild who announced their 17th annual SAG nominees this morning.

The Glee cast is up for a comedy ensemble award, but Colfer was the only cast member other than Jane Lynch to be recognized individually. And given who he's up against he's almost certain to be the frontrunner!

Another bit of good news for a Glbt favorite, The Kids Are All Right, scored individual acting nods for Annete Bening, Mark Rufallo, and also a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees Announced & It’s Less “Colorful” Than The Golden Globes

16 December 2010 6:44 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

The complete list of nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards follows below. The ceremony will be held on January 30th, 2011.

Nothing really to highlight here, unfortunately. SAG voters apparently didn’t care for Halle Berry’s performance as much as the Golden Globes did, because she’s not on this list. And neither is Idris Elba, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe. The cast of For Colored Girls got no love either.

The significance here is that SAG nominees and winners are voted on by members of the union – essentially, their peers.

But one thing that should be obvious by now is that the Oscar race is going to come down to 4 films and the performances in those films: The Social Network, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. I still have to see the last 2.

Here’s the full list:

Elizabeth Edwards showed up in numerous memorial tweets earlier this week, but even more posts surfaced today to express disgust over the Westboro Baptist Church's decision to picket her funeral. The announcement did inspire Michael Ian Black to declare a new item to scratch off of his life's bucket list, though.

In other topics, Denis Leary applauded Miley Cyrus for video of the singer-actress smoking a bong. His commentary, along with Ice-t's reaction to Wesley Snipes going to jail and Damon Lindelof on the "Community" Christmas special's "Lost" jab has been retweeted after the jump.

So who in Twitter-Wood is thankful for Howard Stern sticking it out for another five years with Sirius Radio? Well, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris and Brent Spiner for starters. Much of our feed breathed a collective sigh of relief this morning when news of Stern's renewed deal broke.

As for Seth Meyers, I don't know how he felt about the Stern announcement, but he was appreciative of Mindy Kaling's congratulatory tweet today after he made headlines as the next White House Correspondents' Association Dinner host. His reaction, along with Greg Mottola on "Superbad 2," Jon Favreau on doing the Soulja Boy dance and David Slade on "Eclipse" await you after the jump

WikiLeaks, The Tokyo Earthquake And 'Harry Potter' Reactions In Today's Twitter-Wood

30 November 2010 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Some Twitter-Wood citizens were shocked after the organization WikiLeaks decided to release U.S. diplomatic cables that they'd obtained over the weekend. Some responded with a total lack of surprise, such as Michael Ian Black, and at least one man just wanted to know if they were aware of where his keys might be.

A Tuesday earthquake in Japan, meanwhile, startled people as well. Olivia Wilde has a theory about why it occurred that you probably hadn't considered, while Tom Felton didn't appear to have experienced an interruption during his grocery shopping because of the quake. Find out what he was looking at in Tokyo after the jump, as well as what Rose McGowan thought of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," as well as how "Weird" Al Yankovic sees himself.

Holidays never come without a few grievances, and Nina Dobrev, Mindy Kaling and Ice-t all sounded off with frustrations today, from Christmas music being played too early to NPR stories about traffic and notions of what Thanksgiving is or isn't about in general.

Edgar Wright, meanwhile, shared a quick memorial note about about the passing of actress Ingrid Pitt, who you may know from her work in "The Vampire Lovers," "Doctor Who" or the original "Wicker Man." His thoughts, as well as Felicia Day's reaction to Azeroth getting blitzed in "World of Warcraft" and Patton Oswalt's gut reaction to "Burlesque" await you below.

'Glee' on 'The Office' and other real shows within shows

10 November 2010 7:16 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Thursday's (Nov. 11) episode of "The Office" revolves around its characters watching TV -- "Glee," to be exact. Erin (Ellie Kemper) organizes a viewing party on behalf of her boyfriend Gabe (Zach Woods) in an attempt to get people to like him.

The episode (called "Viewing Party") will include some footage from "Glee," and the script got a thumbs-up from the Fox show's producers. And with it, the show will become the latest in a line of TV series that have told stories involving other TV series.

"The Office" has dabbled in this kind of thing before: Dwight (Rainn Wilson) is a devotee of "Battlestar Galactica" and "24," Andy (Ed Helms) watched "Lost" and Kelly (Mindy Kaling) spends an episode undermining Dwight and Jim (John Krasinski) because they didn't go to her "America's Got Talent" finale party.

"Viewing Party," though, will make "Glee" a bigger part of the show's story than any »

Ivan Reitman’s ‘No Strings Attached’ Trailer

First we got Ashton Kutcher giving Natalie Portman a bouquet of carrots, and now we get a little more. The trailer for No Strings Attached, a romantic comedy directed by Ivan Reitman, has dropped and /Film jumped on it like a pack of piranhas. Now it’s our turn, so check out the trailer below:

I know what you’re thinking; “wow Jon…this looks like a generic romantic comedy” and you know what? You’re one hundred percent right. After watching the trailer, anyone who’s seen enough movies in their lifetime can both get a feel for how the movie will go and predict its ending. However, part of me is actually kind of intrigued, mostly because of the casting. Ludacris (sorry, Chris Bridges), Mindy Kaling, and indie icon Greta Gerwig? Those three balance out the presence of Ashton Kutcher already (yes, I like Ludacris’ acting), plus the »

'Jersey Shore' Star JWoww Evaluates Halloween Costumes Of Her Castmates

29 October 2010 6:30 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Halloween is this weekend, which means that many of you will be headed out to scare up candy, cause mischief and head to parties where women will most likely be dressed as sexy cats or slutty nurses. It's also the first Halloween since the premiere of MTV's hit reality series "Jersey Shore," which means that you will see a whole lot of people strutting around as Snooki or the Situation (in fact, Thursday night's episode of "The Office" featured Mindy Kaling dressed as everybody's favorite poof-wearing smoosh monster). You could certainly make your costume from scratch, but unless you really want to hit the tanning booth hard this weekend, there are official costumes available for Snooki, the Situation and DJ Pauly D.

Because we are committed to excellence here at MTV News, we got our hands on these particular outfits and decided to do some quality control research. Who better »
