My Super Psycho Sweet 16 (TV Movie Review)

23 October 2009 1:10 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

For anyone who’s watched MTV’s reality show My Super Sweet 16, the sense of entitlement exhibited by some of its birthday girls and the obscene flaunting of wealth in the service of celebrating them can be as horrifying as any youth-slasher film. Now that the network has combined the two forms in its original movie My Super Psycho Sweet 16 (debuting tonight at 10 p.m. Est/Pst), it’s disappointing, but perhaps not surprising, that the result doesn’t take full advantage of the opportunity to throw some barbed satire the series’ way, preferring instead to emphasize a generic scenario of pointed objects aimed at its teen characters.

Actually, you have to take some of the protagonists’ word for their teenaged status; “You only turn 16 once,” says antiheroine Madison Penrose (Julianna Guill), who looks like she’s turned 16 at least four or five times. Madison wants to reopen »

Julianna Guill: The Bitch of My Super Psycho Sweet 16

22 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

For at least five minutes, Julianna Guill owned Friday the 13th , Platinum Dunes' reboot which opened earlier this year. And for those five minutes, you know which one they are, every man and adolescent boy (who snuck in to see it, of course) wondered: Where the hell did this gal come from? South Carolina if you want to get down to it. Following a few stints on television ( CSI , My Alibi , Guill took to the big screen in Fired Up! and Friday the 13th , in which she was killed at the hands of Jason Voorhees. She returns to television with My Super Psycho Sweet 16 , an '80s slasher pic from director Jacob Gentry ( interview ). " Friday the 13th and My Super Psycho Sweet 16 are very different films," Guill says, "so I feel lucky to have participated in »

Interview: My Super Psycho Sweet 16 's Jacob Gentry

22 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

In MTV's My Super Psycho Sweet 16 , a pampered teen convinces her wealthy father to renovate a dilapidated roller rink for her sweet sixteen bash, only to have the party crashed by the serial killer who haunted their town ten years earlier. While a somewhat familiar premise, this contemporary homage to the early '80s slashers comes courtesy of director Jacob Gentry who helmed the middle portion of The Signal . And believe it or not, much like the movies it was inspired by, this slasher happens to be a lot of fun! Shock Till You Drop got a chance to talk to the director about everything from the making of the project, sticking to the classic '80s formula, orchestrating the kills and creating a cool, new masked killer. Robg.: My Super Psycho Sweet 16 is a lot of fun, it's »

Jed Elinoff and Scott Alan Thomas penned the script. Not entirely sure what kind of platform release the project is getting (small screen debut or theatrical); I've got my ear to the ground for more details. Stay tuned! »
