Idol Recap: And Then There Were 12...

11 March 2015 6:37 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Imagine an American Idol with Jennifer Lopez rocking a powder-blue Amish dress from the Pennsylvania Dutch Collection, Ryan Seacrest losing his cool and an audience of SwayBots successfully moving in time with the music.

None of those signs of an impending apocalypse occurred on tonight’s Season 14 Top 12 announcement/performance episode, but the hour was not without its share of whopping surprises.

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 14 - Top 12 Revealed

11 March 2015 4:58 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

There were definitely some surprises in last week's first Top 24 eliminations. One week, Trevor Douglas was my pick to win the whole thing. The next week? Poof. Gone. One week, it seemed like everybody hated Maddie Walker for taking Rachael Hallack's place in the Top 24. The next week? Bam! Embraced by America despite an utterly mediocre performance. On Wednesday (March 11) night, "American Idol" is unveiling our Top 12 Finalists. How will the lucky singers be revealed? And what will we do to fill the hour?  Click through and follow along! 8:00 p.m. Et. I feel pretty good about Qaasim Middleton's chances of making the Top 12, so his picture is accompanying my recap. I don't know if the judges are getting Wild Card picks or what, but by hook or by crook, I'm betting on Qaasim, at least for another week. 8:02 p.m. I don't have a clue what's happening tonight. »

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 14 - Top 8 Boys Perform

4 March 2015 4:59 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Last week, the "American Idol" Top 24 performed over two chaotically edited nights.  This week, we're going to apparently be eliminating eight people, while also showcasing eight performances per night leading up to eliminations next week. And Aretha Franklin's going to be involved in some way. Click through and follow along! 7:59 p.m. Et. Per Ryan Seacrest's twitter, eight guys will get called to perform. If you don't get called, you're eliminated. This is, of course, utterly vicious to the last few performers, who will be stressed out balls of adrenaline. But who cares! 8:00 p.m. Oh Snap! It's Aretha! She's doing "I Will Survive." A couple years ago, we were really concerned about Aretha's health and it seemed like we might not have her for long, but she looks and sounds spectacular. What an absolutely terrific turn of events. I'm just plain happy. 8:03 p.m. »

American Idol: The Top 24's Motown Week Song Choices Revealed!

4 March 2015 3:16 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

They’re singing oldies, but will they be goodies?

American Idol‘s Season 14 semifinalists are gearing up for a second week of performances from Detroit — tonight and Thursday (8/7c on Fox) — and TVLine’s got the exclusive scoop on their Motown-themed song choices.

We’ve got the entire 24-track set list — but while all of last week’s performers prepped tunes and received some mentoring from living legend Aretha Franklin, only 16 of ‘em will take the stage.

Idol Top 12 Guys Recap: All They Wanna Do Is Zooma Zoom Zoom Zoom

No disrespect to the incomparable Ryan Seacrest, but perhaps for one week only, American Idol should’ve replaced him with an auctioneer?

Tonight’s one-hour telecast — which featured Season 14’s Top 12 guys performing for only eight available slots next Wednesday — was paced so frenetically it made Usain Bolt look like a three-legged tortoise.

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 14 - Top 12 Boys Perform

25 February 2015 4:59 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The auditions are over. Hollywood Week is over.  Finally we get to start voting on "American Idol," or at least you get to start voting if you happen to vote on "American Idol." And for me, that means a transition to a live-blog, even if the shows currently aren't Actually live, since there's no way the "Idol" production is prepared to do 12 performances in an hour-long live show. But anyway... Follow along and comment below. Commenting has been slow so far, but perhaps now it's time for people to being to have real preferences? 8:01 p.m. Et. Ah. We're in Detroit for this round. That's fun. And you can tell when this was shot based on Ryan Seacrest's beard compared to where it was on Oscars night. Or... Not. Singer: Adam Ezigalian Song: "I Wanna Rock" My Take: Wow. This episode is way too tightly cut. With almost no preamble, »

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 14 - 'Showcase #2' - Completing the Top 24

19 February 2015 6:34 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

We're back! Last night, "American Idol" filled half of its Season 14 Top 24, leaving another 12 House of Blues performances to hint at, another 12 Green Mile walks to tease and probably several more moments of awkwardness that hopefully won't be as bad as what went down last night with Maddie Walker and Rachel Hallack.  Be decisive "Idol" judges! And don't dick little kids around. And now... Thursday's (February 19) episode... 8:01 p.m. Let's get back to Hollywood Anderson, eh? We loved Hollywood in his first audition in New York City, but then we didn't love him nearly as much in Hollywood, which verges on ironic. Hollywood's House of Blues performance seems like it was Ok, but if Hollywood is advancing, it'll still mostly be on the wings of that first audition. Apparently he didn't do enough. It's back to busking for Hollywood. "Y'all saw me for me," Hollywood says with gratitude. That first audition was so good, »

American Idol Recap: 24 Live Another Day

19 February 2015 6:33 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

The following equation recently appeared on a standardized math test for third graders, thanks to the Common Core State Standards Initiative:

American Idol selected 48 Season 14 contestants to perform at a showcase at Los Angeles’ House of Blues — with the goal of having its three judges (and a team of no fewer than 37 producers) whittle the field down to 24 vocalists who’ll compete for the public vote. If the final roster of contestants must be split evenly by gender — and 12 hopefuls were shown advancing on Wednesday night’s telecast, then who’s likeliest to advance in the night’s final battle: »

American Idol Recap: Filet of Solo

12 February 2015 6:49 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Blood flowed like it was spilling forth from The Shining‘s elevator doors on Thursday night’s installment of American Idol — except there was no need to cover your eyes in horror.

The carnage, as it turns out, was mostly self-induced. “Big Ron” Wilson threw shade at band leader Rickey Minor like he’d bumped his head and woke up channeling Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls. That bespectacled chick with the purple hair garbled her words and then went the “America’s the one who lost out!” route after she got sent to the guillotine.

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 14 - 'Hollywood Week #3' - Group Round Continued

11 February 2015 6:03 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

When last we left "American Idol," they'd cut a bunch of people from Hollywood Week, albeit nobody we'd been made to care about in the slightest.  And as last Thursday's episode ended, Alexis Granville was clinging to life. Or, at the very least, Alexis Granville was having a panic attack.  What comes next?  Follow along with my recap of Wednesday's (February 11) episode... 8:00 p.m. Et. "It's always a very telling day," J-Lo says, sitting up in the balcony with the other judges. 8:02 p.m. But back to Alexis Granville and the subsequent time-out. Recovered from her anxiety attack, Alexis made it back on the stage with Sal's Gal. Sal Valentinetti won some good faith with his kindness to Alexis and he does his Rat Pack thing. Alexis warbles uncertainly. Jax mewls and growls soulfully. There were several other people in that group we didn't hear solo. Boo. Harry Connick Jr. »

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 14 - 'Hollywood Week #1'

4 February 2015 6:00 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Sorry for the three "American Idol" recaps I missed the past two weeks. The combination of film responsibilities at the Sundance Film Festival and predictably atrocious wifi at the Sundance Film Festival had me casting aside some of my TV responsibilities.  But I'm back and I'm all caught up after rushing through three "Idol" episodes in around 90 minutes over the weekend. There were some pretty good singers in New Orleans and San Francisco. I'd point to Maddy Hudson, Greyson Turner, Tyanna Jones, Rocky Peter and Hunter Larsen as just a few performers I'd be happy to see/hear again if the opportunity presents itself. Ditto with Carlos Santana's nephew and a few of the White Guys With Guitars who were better-than-generic, but not immediately nameable in my memory. We're starting Hollywood Week on Wednesday (February 4), so follow along! 8:00 p.m. Et. In case we've forgotten, in order to become American Idol, »

Recap: 'American Idol' Auditions - Minneapolis

22 January 2015 12:14 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

We've reached that intriguing place in the "Idol" audition schedule that overlaps with Sundance, so there's a distinct chance that between now and next Thursday, a few of the audition episodes may not get recapped.  Instead? You can expect a lot of reviews for documentaries you've never heard of! Woot! Follow along with my recap for Wednesday (January 21) night's auditions from Minneapolis... 8:00 p.m. Et. Minneapolis is today's "American Idol" destination. It's the first time "Idol" has been here in seven years, apparently. And the judges are trapped in an SUV. High drama to start the episode. Will they escape? And who will be forced to eat who first? I assume J-Lo and Harry eat Keith first. 8:02 p.m. Darn. They appear to have escaped without resorting to cannibalism. Our first contestant is 17-year-old Shannon Berthiaume, who has never sung in front of anybody before. She's got a strong Kristen Stewart vibe, »

Idol Recap: Minne(apolis) Pooper

21 January 2015 6:32 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

True confession: I may be the only person in the United States who dramatically slid down a wall and let out a tortured “Nooooooo!!!!” after learning that American Idol will eventually cut back to one night a week midway through Season 14.

After three consecutive hump days of middling vocals, “heard it all before” backstories and not nearly enough scenes of Ryan Seacrest getting bear-hugged by jubilant families, however, I’m reconsidering my stance.

Perhaps, in a world where orange is the new black and Idris Elba could/should be the next 007, less is destined to be the new more »
