'Won't Back Down' Trailer Starring Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal

17 May 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The first trailer for Won't Back Down is now online offering the first look at what may be Viola Davis's 2012 Oscar bid with potential as well for Maggie Gyllenhaal. Of course, there is the stumbling block when you consider the film is directed by Daniel Barnz whose Beastly didn't exactly excite audiences. Barnz co-wrote the screenplay with Brin Hill and an in-depth synopsis has yet-to-be released to my knowledge with all that's really known at this point is Davis and Gyllenhaal star as a pair of mothers who team up to help make a difference by establishing a charter school in their Pittsburgh neighborhood. The film co-stars Ving Rhames, Oscar Isaac, Holly Hunter, Rosie Perez and Emily Alyn Lind and is currently set to hit theaters on September 28. You can watch the trailer directly below.

Watch: Trailers For 'What Maisie Knew,' 'Won't Back Down,' 'The Possession' And 'Maniac'

17 May 2012 8:20 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While the following films have all been simmering quietly on the burner while we usher in the major tent poles of the summer movie season, their trailers promise that once the explosions and action die down, we can get back to normal (for the most part).

First up is “What Maisie Knew,” featuring the likes of Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgård and Steve Coogan in a Henry James-derived dramedy that is set to explore the complexity of modern marriage and family happenings, and it looks as if it could be a charming little indie from the directing team of “Suture” helmers Scott McGehee and David Siegel. In this contemporary reworking of James' novel, young Maisie spends life being shuffled around between her irresponsible divorced parents, and watches as they start to pick out new partners – all while their new partners fall in love with each other. The impressive ensemble seems to be on point here, »

Viola Davis And Maggie Gyllenhaal ‘Won’t Back Down’ In New Trailer

17 May 2012 2:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

With the experience of being mothers themselves, Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal give very believable performances in the new trailer for upcoming politically-motivated drama Won’T Back Down.

Inspired by true events, Davis and Gyllenhaal star as two determined mothers who take on the task of improving the education system in their troubled neighbourhood. Spurned on by the love for their children, the pair battle against teachers, principals and even the local political leaders to prove that they ‘won’t back down’.

Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), Holly Hunter (The Incredibles) and Oscar Isaac (Drive) are just a handful of the stars featuring alongside Davis and Gyllenhaal, helping this cast list pack a punch. With both the ladies being award-nominated actresses, their performances in the film will be hard to ignore.

Won’T Back Down, directed by Daniel Barnz, is set for a Us release from 28th September, 2012.

'Won't Back Down' Trailer Makes the Grade

16 May 2012 11:44 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The first trailer for "Won't Back Down," a film co-written and directed by Daniel Barnz ("Beastly," "Phoebe in Wonderland") has dropped, featuring its strong cast of Maggie Gyllenhaal, the unconquerable Viola DavisVing Rhames and Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter.

The flick tells a very consumable (and tear-jerking) story of parents and teachers aligning to step up and make a change in their kids' under-performing school.

Every year, there's at least one: a feel-good family film which tackles tough real world issues and somehow ends on a smile. Sometimes these are based on true stories, and sometimes not. What's important about this type of movie is that it draws upon an unsavory element of cultural truth and presents an unlikely hero who's clever and determined enough to muscle through doubters, administrative obstacles, and his or her own personal hangups. In other words, the hero just won't back down 'til the win »

Maggie Gyllenhaal & Viola Davis in First Trailer for 'Won't Back Down'

16 May 2012 10:55 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

With an election year upon us, the educational system will certainly be a hot button issue for the presidential candidates, and just before Americans cast their votes, a film will put that very topic front and center. Won't Back Down is a new drama from Beastly director Daniel Barnz which follows two mothers from different backgrounds (Maggie Gyllanhaal and Viola Davis) who join forces to take on a failing public school system and institute a charter school for struggling children in the neighborhood, including their own. It looks a little melodramatic, but potentially very uplifting and even inspiring. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Daniel Barnz's Won't Back Down from Yahoo! Movies: Won't Back Down is directed by Daniel Barnz (Beastly) from a script he co-wrote with Brin Hill. First Trailer for Won’T Back Down Starring Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal

16 May 2012 10:49 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The first trailer for the family drama Won’t Back Down (formerly Still I Rise) has gone online.  Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis star as two mothers from different backgrounds who join forces to take on the failing public school system.  It’s a nice idea for a film (apparently based on true events), and the trailer has its moments, but I fear the full feature will be trite examination of a complex issue with a “nice” ending that wraps things up with a smile.  The education system is in dire need of reform and taking a Blind Side approach to the issue is unworthy of the attention it deserves.  That said, Gyllenhaal and Davis are fantastic actresses and Gyllenhaal has certainly been outspoken about social issues in the past, so hopefully Won’t Back Down tackles the issue with intellect and candidness and provides/stirs some thoughtful discussion on the topic. »

Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Oscar Isaac ‘Won’t Back Down’ In First Trailer

16 May 2012 10:39 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Although we’re just in the beginning of the summer blockbuster season, the drama-filled awards season is not too far around the corner. Each year we get our strong contenders and many, many others that attempt to go for the gold. One of the films that look to fall in the latter category is Won’t Back Down, coming from Beastly director Daniel Barnz.

We’ve got our first trailer for the film today, which features Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal fighting the school system aside Oscar Isaac and Holly Hunter. All of these actors are more than talented, but it just looks like the by-the-number drama I tend to avoid. I’d actually much rather see a documentary about these events, something in the vein of the excellent Waiting For Superman. But I do hope this one overcomes some of the cliches it looks burdened by and one can »

Here’s the logline: “Inspired by the book Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz, a girl from Kansas City falls for a man and moves with him to the Emerald City to work at his Emerald Hotel. From writer Natalie Krinsky (Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy) and Warner Horizon Television.”

Huh!

Could Bill Murray & Keira Knightley Be Oscar Winners? We Prematurely Predict Best Actor & Actress At The 2013 Academy Awards

2 March 2012 8:58 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

At the Academy Awards, Best Picture might be the big prize, but the ones that both the winners and the audience have the most emotional connection to tend to be the acting prizes. Seeing a beloved star, or a fresh-faced newcomer, finally pick up a statue more often than not ends up leading the mainstream media coverage; it's always more moving than some producer's acceptance speech.

This year, we saw Meryl Streep finally win her third, and Christopher Plummer win his first, becoming the oldest actor ever to pick up a statuette. Those might have been predicted a while off by many. Meanwhile, two relative unknowns, Jean Dujardin and Octavia Spencer, also became Oscar-winners. Anyone who claims that they predicted those twelve months ago is a liar. Once again, the awards season can be guessed at, but it also springs up all kinds of surprises.

First Look At Viola Davis & Maggie Gyllenhaal In 'Won't Back Down'; Film Will Hit Theaters In September

21 February 2012 5:57 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We really like Maggie Gyllenhaal. We really like Viola Davis too. We like this picture of the two of them looking happy and emotional from 20th Century Fox's upcoming release "Won't Back Down." We like that the film's supporting cast includes Holly Hunter, Oscar Isaac and Lance Reddick. Hell, we even kind of like the fact that Ving Rhames is in this movie. But that, I'm afraid, is where our optimism ends. Why? Well the main reason is that it was both written and directed by Daniel Barnz. Who's he, you might ask. Well, he similarly both wrote and directed the single worst film of 2011, "Beastly," in which Mary-Kate Olsen's high school witch told Alex Pettyfer to "embrace the suck" in the fairy tale reimagining. Never has a title been so apt. The film -- which previously went by the title "Still I Rise" -- will see Viola Davis »

New 'Hunger Games' Poster and 'Jack the Giant Killer' Runs from 'Snow White'

19 January 2012 8:52 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Snow has covered the Seattle streets, but I braved a trip to the theater for my last opportunity to catch Steven Soderbergh's Haywire before it hits theaters tomorrow so I have to get to work on my review, but first how about a new poster and a little release date housekeeping. To begin, The Hollywood Reporter brings word Warner Bros./New Line Cinema has been shuffling the deck and decided to move Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer a full nine months from its originally planned from June 15 date to March 22, 2013. Why? Well, after that lackluster trailer arrived I can only assume the studio didn't believe audiences would be chomping at the bit for another fairy tale-esque fantasy romp two weeks after Snow White and the Huntsman and perhaps anticipation for Fox's Prometheus one week earlier felt like too much competition. So instead of compete why not make »
