First Look: Cianfrance's Place Beyond the Pines Stars Badass Ryan Gosling and Cop Bradley Cooper

28 October 2011 10:00 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Check out the leading men of Blue Valentine writer-director Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines, currently in post. Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper co-star as a motorcycle-badass/bank robber and a cop/politician, respectively. Their lady loves are played by Eva Mendes and Rose Byrne. Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) and Ray Liotta also co-star. It almost sounds too good to be true, but Gosling's hair brings us down to reality. Cianfrance’s co-writer, Ben Coccio, has described the tone of the film as similar to The Deer Hunter and The Godfather. Cianfrance says: “It’s kind of a crime movie and it takes place over a couple of generations, and it’s definitely very epic in scope. I’m super pumped about doing it”...Here's more details. We need to talk about men

26 October 2011 2:52 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Lynne Ramsay's film depends for its impact on a growing distrust and fear of masculinity

By fairly common consent, We Need to Talk About Kevin has a hole at its heart. "Why?" Tilda Swinton's Eva is still asking her eponymous son in the film's closing minutes. She's had 18 years to work out the answer, so what chance have the rest of us in a mere 112 minutes?

Kevin's response isn't much help. "I used to think I knew; now I'm not so sure," he ventures. That could mean he was out to punish his unfeeling mum, but has come to wonder if he went a bit too far, since he's now prepared to submit to a hug. Or it could mean something else entirely. It wouldn't be the first time that he's strung Eva along.

This refusal to assign a clear motive to the instigator of the action is »

Hanks Talks Possible 'Toy Story 4,' Meloni Talks 'Man of Steel' and Foster Rumored for 'R.I.P.D.'

27 June 2011 10:28 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Uh oh, a Toy Story 4? I can already hear people not liking this idea, calling it a cash grab, a merchandising opportunity... You know, everything they called Cars 2 without actually reviewing the film. Additionally we have news on Zack Snyder's Superman movie, a possible Foster sighting and then some. Check it all out below...

While out promoting Larry Crowne, Tom Hanks was asked by the BBC Show Breakfast News whether there will be a Toy Story 4 to which he said, "I think there will be yeah. Yeah, yeah. They're working on it now." Speaking of Hanks promoting Crowne, did you see the video to the right with him on Univision's "Despierta America"? [Bleeding Cool]

I mentioned over the weekend how Christopher Meloni ("Oz") was in negotiations for a major role in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel, but we didn't know which role. I speculated it would be »

Ray Liotta Getting Corrupt For ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’

25 June 2011 5:42 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I’m a sucker for a good crime drama, so Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines is creeping up on my list of anticipated movies for the next few years. When I finally saw Blue Valentine a few days ago (I know, I know, I’m late to the party), I realized that this anticipation can actually be justified by the man behind the film, not just my affinity for the genre it will be in. Kind of a win-win, really.

The cast isn’t half bad, either; you’ve got Valentine star Ryan Gosling playing a bank robber who’s trying to support his wife, played by Eva Mendes, and their young child. On the other side of the law, Bradley Cooper is a cop (and eventually a politician) who battles with Gosling, leading to “a generational feud” between the families of both men. Plus, Greta Gerwig is Cooper‘s wife, »

Eva Mendes Joins Ryan Gosling & Bradley Cooper in Crime Drama

Eva Mendes has confirmed that she will be starring in the upcoming film The Place Beyond the Pines.

Mendes will star alongside Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in the crime drama, whilst actress Greta Gerwig (Arthur) is still negotiating a role.

Following a tragic fallout between a biker-turned-bank robber (Gosling) and cop-turned-politician (Cooper), family rivalries and deep-rooted contention begin to boil over.

Mendes has signed on to play the robber’s love interest and mother of his child, and Gerwig may be cast as the politican’s wife.

Derek Cianfrance, who worked with Gosling on Blue Valentine, will direct -- having also written the script with Ben Coccio.

Mendes can be seen most recently in Last Night and opposite Will Ferrell in The Other Guys. While The Place Beyond the Pines may not receive as many laughs as the latter, this could be one of Mendes’ most dramatic roles.

The film begins production this July. »

Eva Mendes and Greta Gerwig Bring Female Presence to Cianfrance's 'The Place Beyond the Pines'

Deadline reports that Eva Mendes will play the robber's love interest (Gosling) and mother of his child, and Greta Gerwig is in talks to play the politician's wife, joining the already cast Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond The Pines. Despite the supporting role status, seeing how Derek Cianfrance brought out a career best in Michelle Williams, despite the supporting role status, I doubt that Eva Mendes and potentially Greta Gerwig will play throwaway characters. Production is set to begin next month, and further casting announcements should be made shortly. Gist: Co-written by Derek Cianfrance and Ben Coccio, this is about a motorcycle rider (Gosling) who, after having a child, begins robbing banks to support the baby. Cooper plays the part of a cop turned politician who goes up against Gosling's character. Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper have already been cast as the male leads in Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines, and now the main women are beginning to enter the picture. Deadline tells us that both Eva Mendes and Greta Gerwig will be joining the crime drama, which is set to begin shooting next month in Schenectady, NY.

The story tells us that Mendes is being sought to play the love interest and mother of Gosling‘s child. His character does stunts on his bike as a profession, but has to turn to robbing banks to support his new family. Cooper has been said to be playing a rookie cop, but that article reveals that he eventually becomes a politician. This likely ties into the fact that it spans multiple generations, so he should only attain this position after a certain amount of time. Gerwig is reported to »
