Interview: Dominic Monaghan Discusses the Horror & Heart of Pet

  • DailyDead
Seth is lonely and in love—a potent combination that leads him to kidnap and cage Holly, the woman of his obsession, in the new horror film Pet. Written by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist TV series), Pet stars Dominic Monaghan in a role that's equal parts chilling and heartfelt.

With the cleverly unnerving movie coming out on VOD and in theaters December 2nd from Orion Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Films, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Monaghan about the film's 10+ year journey to the big screen, making Seth a believable character, and what's on the horizon for the talented actor, including a TV show that Monaghan is developing with his Lord of the Rings co-star Billy Boyd.

Thanks so much for taking some time to talk with me today, and congrats on Pet, which has phenomenal performances—yourself included. I love this character that you play, Seth. It's

Pet Review

There’s nothing worse than a movie falling apart at the last minute – wait, yes there is. What about a movie that falls apart way sooner? A movie like Pet that begins stumbling over itself only halfway in, eventually landing a final blow of discombobulated trickery without a single root remaining tethered to story. Twists are twists because you flip a theme or concept on its head After establishing coherency, not because you jump from Point A to Point B without reason. The mightiest flaw of this abduction hall-of-mirrors is never anticipating how ripple effects might reverberate off plotted actions, too caged in its own concept to see a bigger, less conceptualized picture.

Dominic Monaghan stars as Seth, an awkward loner who bumps into a high school crush years later. The girl – beautiful Holly (Ksenia Solo) – doesn’t remember Seth from school, or from their bus ride conversation, or again at a bar.

‘Pet’ Trailer: Dominic Monaghan Kidnaps an Old Crush in Creepy South by Southwest Thriller

Watch its trailer below.

The former Charlie Pace and Merry Brandybuck plays a rather different character here: a man whose unrequited love for a woman turn dark and violent. When the object of his affections (Ksenia Solo) repeatedly spurns his advances, he kidnaps her and locks her in a cage. “All these people talk about love like it’s this lightning bolt,” he says to his captive. “Love’s not a lightning bolt; real love takes work.

Dominic Monaghan & Ksenia Solo in Abduction Thriller 'Pet' Trailer

"I'm not doing this for me, I'm doing this for you. Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Pet, about a sweet guy who works at animal shelter who all of a sudden kidnaps and locks up a woman he is interested in. Dominic Monaghan plays the seemingly nice guy who goes crazy and kidnaps her, and Ksenia Solo plays the beautiful woman he has his eyes on. The cast also includes Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Parsons. The twist in this seems to be that she might be even crazier than he is, or something like that (even the synopsis hints at it), but it's hard to tell where this is going with the trailer - there's some really funky moments in this. I'm curious about this, especially because of the cast. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Carles Torrens' Pet, direct

Pet Trailer: Dominic Monaghan is a Creep in Acclaimed Thriller

When I spoke with Domonic Monaghan last year he told me that Pet (review) was a film that he'd been trying to produce for over five years and that it was the best script he'd read pretty much ever.
