Today critically-acclaimed indie drama The New Year drops on iTunes, breaking ground for high-quality low-budget indie films to find avenues of distribution beyond the festival circuit. The New Year, directed and co-written by Brett Haley, tells the story of Sunny (Trieste Kelly Dunn), a young woman who gives up a promising future and returns to her hometown to take care of her ailing father and—with her life on hold—finds herself living a life she never imagined. An official selection of the Los Angeles Film Festival (a qualifying festival for The Oscars), The New Year was a darling of the indie film festival circuit, winning an audience award from the Sarasota Film Festival and praise from the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Variety, earning a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Haley made The New Year on a shoestring budget between jobs as an assistant to director John Hillcoat. "What was most important for me, »

Cinemax’s Banshee is proving just how serious it is by taking a known Disney Channel star and turning her into a party girl with a penchant for sexual deviancy. Lili Simmons, known for Geek Charming and Zeke and Luther, is joining the cast of Banshee, which so far includes the likes of Antony Starr, Ivana Milicevic, Rus Blackwell, Ulrich Thomsen, Matt Servitto, Trieste Dunn, Daniel Ross Owens, and Hoon Lee. All together they will be bringing to life a story written by authors Jonathon Hopper and David Schickler and executive produced by True Blood’s Alan Ball and House’s Greg Yaitanes.
According to TVLine, Simmons, with all her Disney Channel innocence, will be taking on the considerably more adult role of Rebecca Bowman. Rebecca will be a series regular and will have the delightful job of being Banshee’s go to sexy girl. By day she is a »

It’s beginning to seem like Cinemax’s Banshee will never cease finding new actors and actresses to join its ever-expanding cast. The series, coming from True Blood’s Alan Ball and House’s Greg Yaitanes, has hired yet another relatively unknown actor to be a part of what will hopefully turn out to be the newest must-watch TV show. I foresee Banshee as being the series that will launch a number of careers, including that of our new cast member, Rus Blackwell.
Banshee, which comes from scribes Jonathon Tropper and David Schickler, will focus on Lucas (Antony Starr), an ex-con and master thief who takes on the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, Penn. He uses his new cover to continue his criminal activities, all while he is pursued by gangsters. According to TVline, Blackwell will be paying Gordon, who is Banshee’s Da and is currently married to Lucas’ old flame, »

True Blood creator Alan Ball has been working hard to bring his latest series, Banshee, to Cinemax and part of that process involves finding the best actors for the various roles. The latest actor to be brought on to the series is Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen. The project is written by Jonathon Tropper and David Schickler and is one of the few projects with Ball’s name attached to it that has me interested.
According to TVLine, Thomsen will be playing a local, wealthy businessman in Basnhee, Penn, who uses his natural intimidating aura to do whatever he wants, believing he’s above the law. Banshee will star Antony Starr as an ex-convict and master thief who flees to Banshee and assumes the identity of the towns sheriff, using his newfound authority to continue his criminal activities unchecked. Unfortunately, his past is catching up to him as a group of gangsters hunt him down. »
