While things continue to percolate on Eddie Alcazar's indie scifi 0000 the director has been more than keeping himself busy. Alcazar has long been developing a script for a biopic on the life of Johnny Tapia, the mercurial boxing star - his multiple championships balanced by the multiple times he was declared clinically dead thanks to drug abuse - and in the course of researching that project had opportunity to spend a good amount of time with Tapia himself. And it didn't take Alcazar long at all to realize that the smart man would simply point his camera at Tapia and let the man talk. So that's what he did and what started as one project - the biopic - turned into two as Alcazar »
When Gary Oldman gives a bad performance in the same movie, I won’t use it as a gauge of your acting talent. In that sense, Shiloh Fernandez has a clean slate in my own mind, and I can casually read a THR story which informs us the Red Riding Hood and upcoming Evil Dead remake actor will lead Johnny, a biopic of the recently-deceased star boxer Johnny Tapia.
Director Eddie Alcazar, making his feature debut, has co-written the script with Bettina Gilois that elects to focus on the man’s early days; we can expect to see dramatic depictions of his father’s murder — which happened before Tapia was even born — the kidnapping and murder of his mother at the age of eight, and a jump into boxing at nine. That might prove to be something positive amidst all that other horror, but these events still helped lead to »

Shiloh Fernandez is to portray the five time world champion boxer Johnny Tapia in a biopic creatively titled Johnny. Fernandez previously appeared in Red Riding Hood (2011) and Red (2008), the awesome one with the dead dog and Brian Cox, not the Bruce Willis film. Eddie Alcazar is set to write and direct, and he seems like the perfect fit given that he recently finished a documentary base on the same man titled Tapia. I’m not giving away prizes for titles today.
Johnny Tapia died earlier this year on 27th May, at the age of 45. Out of 66 professional matches, he won 59, 30 of which were by Ko. Tapia seemed to live one of the most tragic lives you could imagine. His father was murdered before he was born, and at the age of 8 his mother was kidnapped, raped, hanged, and stabbed. Nobody believed Tapia when he said he had seen his mother »

Based on true events of Tapia’s tragic early years - his father was killed while he was still in the womb, while his mother was raped and murdered when he was 8. Unsurprisingly these traumas led to a life of drug addiction.
Tapia began boxing at age 9 and became a star in the late 1990s, winning titles including the Wbo super flyweight and Wbo bantamweight.
Later in life his brother-in-law and nephew were killed in a car accident on their way to a hospital to visit Tapia who had suffered a cocaine overdose.
Shooting on the project will kick off next year. »

Anonymous Content is producing the film, which is based on true events of Tapia’s early years. Tapia’s life had a streak of tragedy even as he fought to stand his ground against what life threw at him.
