Mary Kay Letourneau's father, John George Schmitz, was a conservative Catholic Republican member of Congress who ran for President against Richard Nixon in 1972 on the American Independent Party, winning 1,100,868 votes(1.4%). He was notable for his far right-wing sympathies, considered to be the third most conservative member of Congress since World War II, and was expelled from the John Birch Society for "extremism".
