17 Things You Learn About Broad City’s Abbi and Ilana From Hanging Out With Them

18 March 2015 7:58 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have already graced the cover of New York Magazine in a sweater for two, and stormed our pages with tales of subway farts and the sweaty mishegoss that is living in this crazy town. But the two days they spent with New York — at dinner at ABC Kitchen, the Cut’s fashion party at the Gramercy Park Hotel, and coffee in Greenpoint — yielded far more goodness, laughs, and stray observations than could fit in any one magazine feature. Ahead of the season-two finale of Broad City tonight, here are Abbi and Ilana on what makes them nervous, dating blues, and the original Bevers.1. The original Bevers is Abbi’s best friend. Abbi’s roommate’s terrible boyfriend who never leaves their apartment, played by John Gemberling, is named after Abbi’s best friend, Jess Bevers, who just moved to Belgium. “Yeah, we »

‘Broad City’ Star John Gemberling Reveals Bevers’ True Aspiration in Life

5 February 2015 6:00 AM, PST | VH1.com | See recent VH1.com news »

One of the most accurate parts of Broad City‘s depiction of 20something life in New York is the awkward roommate. (We’ve all encountered them — or maybe we are the awkward roommate.) Technically, Abbi’s roommate is a pretty girl who likes to volunteer in Haiti and vacation with her family, and is never, ever there. Instead, Abbi is tormented by her roommate’s ever-present boyfriend, Bevers, who violates basically every social code. As Bevers, John Gemberling brings sloth-like behavior to a new level, disregarding any concept of boundaries. Thanks to him, we now understand that couch sores are a thing, and will think twice before settling in for our next Netflix binge. (Or at least do it with pants on.) We chatted with the Ucb alum about his role on Broad City and the NBC sitcom Marry Me, and brainstormed some potential Lifetime movie pitches (should anyone from »

John Gemberling Talks Playing a Man-Baby on Broad City and Being a Man-Baby in Real Life

4 February 2015 11:00 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

On Broad City, John Gemberling plays Matthew Bevers, better known simply as Bevers, the worst roommate ever. He isn’t even technically Abbi’s roommate, but a hanger-on — the boyfriend of her actual roommate, who is never in the country. Bevers is a character you only wish to exist on television: He rummages through Abbi's food, tosses her Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons, and masturbates on the couch to The Good Wife. He is a nightmare roommate. Vulture called up the actor who plays Bevers, John Gemberling, at his home in the Valley in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife and two kids. The conversation threaded between the performative and the surreal, as Gemberling told me about masturbating to Showgirls in a friend’s den and the time he duct-taped a refrigerator door shut because the food was rotting inside. It looked like you were having a lot of »

Comedy Central Renews ‘Broad City’ For Third Season

14 January 2015 8:00 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Comedy Central has renewed emerging hit series “Broad City” for a third season, just hours before the show’s sophomore turn on the network is set to debut.

Comedy Central said “Broad City” was the number one show in cable in its time slot among men between 18 and 34 during its first season on the air, and also the number-one new comedy on cable in 2014 among the same demographic.  “Broad City” is created by stars Abbi  Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, who executive produce along with Amy Poehler, 3 Arts’ Dave Becky, Sam Saifer and Tony Hernandez. Review: 'Broad City' mixes sex, slapstick and absurdist comedy in season 2

14 January 2015 6:00 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The remarkable thing about the  renaissance happening on Comedy Central — a channel on as hot a creative streak as anyone in the business at the moment — is that none of the shows that have been part of it have been all that revolutionary in form. You have a handful of sketch comedy shows ("Key & Peele," "Inside Amy Schumer," "Kroll Show"), a couple of reality show parodies ("Nathan For You," "Review"), and a single-camera sitcom in "Broad City," which returns for a second season tonight at 10:30. What distinguishes all of them, then, is in the sharply-defined voice and perspective of each show, and in the execution of it. Key and Peele have a clear and distinct perspective on race, but they're also pop culture omnivores whose show is as much of a chameleon as they are. Amy Schumer has a take on male-female (and female-female) relationships that I haven't seen on TV before, »
