Us Briefs: HBO takes Us rights to 'Cries From Syria'

HBO has acquired Evgeny Afineevsky’s Sundance selection and follow-up to Winter On Fire: Ukraine’s Fight For Freedom in a deal with executive producer David Dinerstein.

Cries From Syria chronicles the Middle East country’s civil war and draws on hundreds of hours of war footage as well as testimony from child protestors, human rights activists, citizens and high-ranking army generals who have defected from the Army.

The film receives its world premiere in Park City this month in the Documentary Premieres strand and will debut on HBO on March 13.

Annapurna Television is partnering with the Coen Brothers on Western anthology The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs. Annapurna issued a press release saying it intended to pursue “an innovative television and theatrical integrated approach” without elaborating. Joel and Ethen Coen wrote the script and will direct and produce through their Mike Zoss Productions label. Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz and John Cena to star in The Pact

Universal has just gained its leads for the R-rated comedy The Pact. Leslie Mann (This is 40), Ike Barinholtz (Suicide Squad) and WWE star John Cena (Trainwreck) will star in the comedy as parents who discover each of their daughters have made a pact to lose their virginity at prom, and launch an operation to prevent the girls from fulfilling it.

Pitch Perfect screenwriter Kay Cannon will be making her directorial debut with The Pact while Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, Eben Russell and brothers Brian & Jim Kehoe will pen the script. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will also produce the film alongside Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver with their company, Point Grey Pictures.

The Pact is set for an April 20th, 2018 release. »

‘The Pact’ Starring Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz and John Cena Acquired by Universal

In a competitive situation, Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the comedy “The Pact” starring Leslie Mann and set it to open on April 20, 2018.

Mann co-stars with Ike Barinholtz and John Cena with “Pitch Perfect” scribe Kay Cannon making her directorial debut.

Eben Russell, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, and brothers Brian and Jim Kehoe wrote the script for Point Grey, Good Universe, Hurwitz & Schlossberg Productions, and Dmg.

The film follows three parents who, upon discovering that their daughters have made a pact to lose their virginities on prom night, go out and try and stop them before it’s too late.

Point Grey’s Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver will produce alongside Hurwitz and Schlossberg, and Dmg Entertainment’s Chris Fenton. Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake of Good Universe will executive produce with Chris Cowles of Dmg.
