Call-In Commentary: Watch the "Pariah" trailer with writer-director Dee Rees

16 December 2011 9:49 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

It's no surprise that young people have trouble finding themselves and subsequently fitting into larger society. It's a challenging path to self-discovery, and as the "It Gets Better" campaign has taught us, for gay youths that journey is often made exponentially more difficult. Such is the case with Alike (in a standout performance from actress Adepero Oduye), a lesbian teenager struggling to find herself amongst her African-American community.

"Pariah" follows the trials and tribulations of this young character as she embarks on a search of sexual expression and identity, and marks the feature film directorial debut of Dee Rees, the film's writer-director. To get a better sense of the movie, we asked Dees to participate in our "Call-In Commentary" series where filmmakers provide narration to their movie trailer. In the video below, hear firsthand about the state her main character lives in and the search she's boldly plunging into.

Call-In Commentary: Watch "The Sitter" trailer with director David Gordon Green

9 December 2011 1:37 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Would you trust foul-mouthed, girl-chasing Jonah Hill with your kids? That's the focal point of "The Sitter," the "Superbad" star's newest R-rated comedy. In the film, Hill is pressed into babysitting duties with a trio of attitude-ridden kids, and is soon embroiled in one misadventure after another.

The man behind the madness is David Gordon Green, the "George Washington" auteur who delivered "Pineapple Express" and "Your Highness" to the stoner crowd and is now going for rauch-inspired laughs (before he heads to the horror genre). To get an insider's take on "The Sitter," we recruited Green for our "Call-In Commentary" series where filmmakers provide narration to their movie trailer. In the video below, hear Green describe the inspirations for the film, how the cast improvised and more. "The Sitter" hits theaters today.

A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas (review)

9 December 2011 5:40 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

I’ve been trying to think of what aspect of the third installment of the stoner saga of Harold and Kumar pisses me off the most, and I think I’ve settled on it: many of the same movie fans who will moan and groan at the prospect of the star-studded round-robin romantic comedy New Year’s Eve will lap this up, but it’s just as pandering and just as preposterous. Want to make manchildren laugh? Blow some weed smoke out at them in 3D. Call something “Avatarded” as a compliment. Get a baby high. Throw in a subplot about a “hot virgin I met on the Internet” who’s horny for a manchild. (That, right there, must be one of the most brilliantly pandering things a movie has ever come up with. Credit to screenwriter Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg for knowing their audience.) Shoot Santa Claus in the head. »

Brilliant First Poster For American Reunion Takes Us Back To The Beginning

9 December 2011 3:30 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

If you’re at all sceptical about the upcoming sequel in the American Pie series, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Everything we’ve seen so far – which includes two terrific trailers, and plenty of other great stuff – has been completely spot on.

With all of the original prinipals from the original three films reprising their roles, American Reunion looks like it’s going to be one of next year’s best comedies.

One of the first things we saw from the film was the teaser poster back in August, and MTV Movies have now got the first proper poster to share with us, and it’s brilliant, paying homage to American Pie’s instantly recognisable poster from way back in 1999 (which you can see underneath in case you’ve forgotten, courtesy of Wikipedia).

The film’s been co-written and -directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the pair »

New ‘American Reunion’ Poster Calls Back to Old ‘American Pie’ Poster

8 December 2011 3:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Since so much of the appeal of American Reunion lies in whatever lingering affection you have for 1999's American Pie, it's only natural that the marketing folks would try at every turn to remind you of how much you loved the first movie. That tactic is especially evident in the film's just-released poster, which recreates the one from the original. Sure, Jim (Jason Biggs) has clothes on, Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) is holding a baby bottle instead of a flute, Oz (Chris Klein) has way less hair, and the gang is apparently eating pies now instead of fucking them -- but the overall picture looks very familiar. Check it out after the jump. Here's the American Reunion poster: [2] And for comparison, the American Pie one: [3][both posters via Movies.com [4]] I'm really hoping that the substitution of a baby bottle for the flute doesn't imply that Michelle will be doing to the former in this installment »

The Five Year Engagement (2012) Movie Trailer, Poster: Jason Segel

The Five Year Engagement Trailer Poster. Nicholas Stoller‘s The Five Year Engagement (2012) movie trailer, movie poster stars Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, and Rhys Ifans. The Five Year Engagement‘s plot synopsis: “Beginning where most romantic comedies end, this film looks at what happens when an engaged couple keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle.”

This looks pretty funny, great bits all the way through plus the arrow part at the end of the moive trailer is hilarious. That is the weirdest apron (Jason Segel) I have seen in some time.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas

Stars: John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris, Paula GarcésDanny Trejo | Written by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg | Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson

Harold and Kumar, the twenty-first century’s answer to Cheech and Chong return with their third film, a festive extravaganza featuring hi-jinks (or, if you will, ‘high-jinks’), Father Christmas and, of course, Neil Patrick Harris. Or if we’re being humbugs, child abuse, grievous bodily harm and attempted rape.

It’s fairly amusing to note that Kal Penn (Kumar) abruptly left his regular gig on House (the character was hastily killed off off-screen) to take a job with the Obama administration, a post he left with similar swiftness to film a new Harold & Kumar movie. Here is man with his priorities in order (Penn retook his post before leaving again to star in the Nph-starring How I Met your Mother). Bleary-eyed H »

Call-In Commentary: Watch the "My Week with Marilyn" trailer with director Simon Curtis

6 December 2011 9:26 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

If you're still upset that Michelle Williams' Oscar nominations for "Brokeback Mountain" and "Blue Valentine" didn't translate into gold statues, you may be finding solace with her performance in "My Week with Marilyn." In portraying 1950's bombshell Marilyn Monroe, the actress has found herself at the center of Academy Awards talk yet again.

The film centers around Monroe's first and only trip to England while shooting "The Prince and the Showgirl," and her unexpected week-long whirlwind romance with a young assistant director named Colin Clark (played by Eddie Redmayne), from whose memoirs the movie is based. With a cast that includes Emma Watson (in her first post-"Potter" role), Kenneth Branagh, Toby Jones, Dominic Cooper and Judi Dench, "My Week with Marilyn" is generating considerable buzz as an intriguing look at celebrity culture in an age before TMZ.

Call-In Commentary: Watch the "Shame" trailer with writer-director Steve McQueen

1 December 2011 11:54 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

With a stunning, uncompromised performance from Michael Fassbender, "Shame" is easily one of the most powerful films of the year. Fassbender plays a deeply conflicted sex addict hopelessly seeking anything to fill his needs.

The endlessly talented Carey Mulligan plays his quirky and also troubled sister, and their broken relationship is an acute link throughout the movie. The film generated headlines after it was dealt an Nc-17 rating, but everyone involved has now embraced it as a badge of honor. And unlike the last major motion picture to get that grade, the ill-fated "Showgirls," the Nc-17 delivers an unflinching and breathtaking experience.

Steering this ship is Steve McQueen, the award-winning director of "Hunger" who helmed and co-wrote "Shame." To delve into his buzzed-about pic, McQueen was kind enough to participate in our "Call-In Commentary" series, where filmmakers provide audio commentary to their trailers. "Shame" opens in limited release on December »

Directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are bringing the gang back together. Yup, that’s right. One presumes, anyway. Anyhoo. Check out a behind-the-scenes featurette for “American Reunion”, the 25th installment in the “American Pie” franchise. Writer-Directors Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg Talk American Reunion

15 November 2011 9:31 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As you may have noticed, last week I got the chance to sit down with screenwriters/directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg in anticipation of the release of the third film in their Harold & Kumar franchise, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. We talked about the film and the future of the franchise, as well as a Harold & Kumar animated series that they’re currently shopping to networks. Additionally, I talked to them a bit about American Reunion, which they wrote and directed. The film reunites the entire original cast of American Pie as they gather for their high school reunion. Hurwitz and Schlossberg talked about how they got involved with the film, how the American Pie comedy differs from the comedy of Harold & Kumar, the plot of the film, what kind of music will be featured, how they plan to shock audiences in 2011, and much more. 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas' Crew Lipdubs 'Party in the U.S.A.'

8 November 2011 7:46 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

When you're dealing with a movie that has Danny Trejo in an ugly Christmas sweater, a baby covered in cocaine, a robot that makes waffles, and a drug-induced claymation sequence, there's really no need to ask why the crew of A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (which has a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes right now) decided to put together a lipdub to the tune of Miley Cyrus' pop song Party in the U.S.A. It's just something that happens. Director Todd Strauss-Schulson (@TheRealTSS on Twitter) even gets in on the lip syncing action himself in a video that takes him and the crew all the way to the premiere of the film. Here's the video which Todd Strauss-Schulson posted on his official website (via SlashFilm): Todd Strauss-Schulson made his feature film directing debut with this holiday comedy written by franchise creators Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg, and starring Kal Penn »

Original Idea for Harold and Kumar 3 That Never Happened

8 November 2011 5:12 PM, PST | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

"A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas" didn't start out about the two characters chasing after a prized Christmas tree, but was more in-line with the other two installments. It was to be called "Harold and Kumar and the Legend of Eazy-e's Stash." Unfortunately, things quickly fell apart and a Holiday film was the result. "In [the original story], Harold and Kumar find out about an amazing bag of weed that once belonged to Eazy-e in the early nineties," said writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. "Before he died, Eazy and one of his top hoes hid the bag somewhere in the United States and left clues to its whereabouts within famous rap lyrics. (Kinda like the dollar bill in 'National Treasure.') Alas, it turned out that the logistics of getting the rights to Eazy-e's estate were more challenging than distributing a holiday film."
