Harold & Kumar Animated Series Gets Greenlight

16 May 2012 2:30 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Get ready for Harold & Kumar on the small screen. Deadline reports that Adult Swim has announced its full slate of shows, which includes a mix of seven animated and live-action pilots. One of those shows is an animated series based on the popular movie franchise. Lionsgate, which produces the movies, brought the animated series to the market in November. The series will have original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg write and produce the show. What makes the show even more interesting is that John Cho and Kal Penn are on board to voice their characters and produce.

Below is the full slate of shows:

Untitled Animated Harold & Kumar Project (In Development) – An animated version of the eponymous blockbuster stoner comedy series. Produced by Lionsgate.

Rick & Morty – A genius inventor grandfather and his less than genius grandson, and the journeys in life they share. From Dan Harmon (Community) and Justin Roiland. »

Adult Swim Order 'Harold & Kumar' Animated Pilot, Plus Projects From Dan Harmon & Seth Grahame-Smith

16 May 2012 10:30 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As part of the annual dog-and-pony show that is network up-fronts, where new series are trotted out before advertisers and press, Cartoon Network has revealed (via Hollywood Reporter) that they have ordered eight new pilots for its after hours Adult Swim programming block, and among them are a new series from "Community" creator Dan Harmon, an animated series based on the 'Harold & Kumar' franchise, and a project produced by "Dark Shadows"/"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" writer Seth Grahame-Smith.

The 'Harold & Kumar' animated project, which was announced back in November, will star John Cho and Kal Penn, reprising their roles as the aimless, White Castle-obsessed stoners, and will be overseen by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the screenwriters behind the film series (the last film, the brilliant, sadly marginalized "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas," came out last year). The 'Harold & Kumar' movies always had an exaggerated, more-than-slightly cartoony feel (in the last film, »

Adult Swim Orders 8 Pilots Including an Animated Harold & Kumar Series and a New Series from Community’s Dan Harmon

15 May 2012 4:36 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The future of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network’s weird older brother, just got a little bit clearer, as the cable network has announced a bevy of new pilots that will compete for a schedule spot in 2012-2013. The most prominent of the bunch are an untitled animated continuation of the pot-fueled adventures of Harold & Kumar and Rick & Morty, a comedy from Community creator, Dan Harmon. The former is being scripted by franchise writers (and directors of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay) Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg and will see stars John Cho and Kal Penn giving voice to animated versions of themselves. Rick & Morty, meanwhile, follows the adventures of an inventor and his dimwitted grandson. Hit the jump for more. Per The Live Feed, the remaining pilot orders consist of: Coffin Dodgers: A 30-minute comedy about a rowdy retirement home from Drawn Together masterminds Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser. »

Movie Review - American Reunion (2012)

7 May 2012 3:34 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

American Reunion, 2012.

Directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg.

Starring Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy, Jennifer Coolidge and John Cho.

Synopsis:

Jim, Michelle, Stifler and company reunite in East Great Falls, Michigan for their high school reunion.

13 years ago I sneaked into a screening of American Pie (I was a whole year younger than the 15 certificate) and was treated to what has been described as the Porky's of my generation. Last night I got to take a trip down nostalgia lane for American Reunion, and boy at times did it make me feel old.

While the first two American Pie films were excellent, the third film left a sour taste in a lot of fan's mouths due to it being fairly lame, with half of the cast missing. On top of that, the American Pie »

This week's new films

American Pie: Reunion (15)

(Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, 2012, Us) Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy, Alyson Hannigan. 113 mins

It's rare to see teen-movie characters all grown up, and this illustrates the reason why: they just make us feel old. The gang's all here, reverting to their old non-pc habits even as they mourn their lost youth. It's patchy and often dodgy comedy, but there's still something heartening about Stifler's defiant idiocy and Jim's dad's middle-age second chance.

Safe (15)

(Boaz Yakin, 2012, Us) Jason Statham, Catherine Chan. 94 mins

Triads, Russian mobsters, cops and everyone else in New York falls foul of Statham in another ludicrous but fast-moving actioner.

Two Years At Sea (U)

(Ben Rivers, 2012, UK) Jake Williams. 90 mins

Extraordinary, otherworldly observation of a modern-day Scottish hermit.

Goodbye First Love (15)

(Mia Hansen-Løve, 2011, Fra/Ger) Lola Créton, Sebastian Urzendowsky. 111 mins

Heartfelt study of a young teen's formative romantic fortunes.

American Pie: Reunion Review

Directors: Hayden Schlossberg, Jon Hurwitz

Cast: Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Eugene Levy, Jason Biggs, Jennifer Coolidge, Mena Suvari, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Thomas Ian Nicholas

Running Time: 113 mins

Certificate: 15

Synopsis: 13 years after Jim (Biggs) fornicated with baked goods, he and his old buddies return to East Great Falls for a school reunion, discovering what has changed and what hasn’t…

I’ve held back on my review for American Pie: Reunion for two reasons. One. Work load. Two. It’s very hard to review. You see, as a film critic, its very difficult not to get caught up in the hoopla of a big release; not get excited by the prospect of a new ‘Pie’ movie and the nostalgia factor of seeing one hit cinemas after so long.

Yes, it has been nine years since the last official ‘slice of pie’, bar a few straight to DVD efforts, »

Following a string of direct to DVD movies, the original gang are all back for American Pie: Reunion, the fourth theatrical outing for the American Pie franchise… It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed everyone has grown up (even if they still don’t look that old) and moved on with their lives – Jim and Michelle are married, have a kid and a sex life that’s in the toilet; Oz is a successful sports presenter with a model girlfriend; Kevin is happily married – and a house-husband; whilst FInch and Stifler, well they’re Finch and Stifler!

Review: American Pie: Reunion

2 May 2012 9:54 AM, PDT | Pure Movies | See recent Pure Movies news »

This is the Pure Movies review of American Reunion, directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, and starring Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Seann William Scott, Mena Suvari, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge and Eugene Levy. The lives of Jim Levenstein (Biggs) and his high school pals have moved on since American Pie’s original outing: Jim is a husband (to Alyson Hannigan’s Michelle) and father, Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is happily married, Oz (Chris Klein) is a minor celebrity, Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) has been travelling the world and Stifler (Seann William Scott) is, well, still the Stifmesiter. Despite having two sequels (American Pie 2 and American Wedding) and four direct-to-dvd films in the bag, the franchise feels like it has finally come home, with all of the cast members returning for one last hurrah, including Kevin’s high school love Vicky (Tara Reid »

The flicking of testicles is not a topic we get to explore a lot here on HeyUGuys so thank sweet Mother Goodness that Ben Mortimer was on hand to take the two directors of American Pie: Reunion to task and redress this balance.

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg took the reins and it seems became the party organisers for the Pie gang to get back together and relive their glory years on the big screen thirteen years after the world fell about at the sexual hijinx of a generation hurtling towards maturity and stopping short.

American Reunion Review: A Crowd Pleasing Slice Of Familiar Pie

1 May 2012 7:31 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

When we remember the frenzy of nostalgia which crowded last year’s Oscars – with films like The Artist, Hugo and Midnight in Paris transporting us back to the magical worlds of old – the possibility of getting misty-eyed at a sex comedy film series that is merely 13 years old seems absolutely ludicrous. That American Pie: The Reunion will legitimately evoke this feeling from its core audience – now in their mid-twenties to early-thirties – is a testament to the series’ insistence to nimbly remain uproariously juvenile while providing just enough new insights into the character’s lives to make it worthwhile.

It is thirteen years since the kids left high school, and on the verge of a reunion, they all appear to have grown into their adult lives with the expected lack of enthusiasm. Married couple Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) find it hard to get »

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg interview: on writing and directing American Pie: Reunion

30 April 2012 7:53 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are no strangers to comedy. Here, the duo tell us about their approach to writing and directing American Pie: Reunion...

In another of our American Pie: Reunion interviews, we chat to the film's writing and directing duo, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, about the jump from making the Harold & Kumar movies to this franchise, characterisation, and convincing its cast to return once again...

You seem to have nailed the tone just right. How did you arrive at American Reunion?

Hayden Schlossberg: Well, we'd watched the films a lot over the years, so we kind of knew the right tone. That was one of the exciting things about doing the movie, as there are lot of similarities between American Pie and Harold & Kumar. Both have shocking, outrageous scenes, so that aspect of the movie was familiar to us. The scenes that were a little more heartfelt, »

Eddie Kaye Thomas and Chris Klein interview: on returning to American Pie: Reunion

30 April 2012 7:15 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Ahead of the UK release of American Pie: Reunion, we were lucky enough to meet up with returning stars Eddie Kaye Thomas and Chris Klein for a chat about its making...

It’s 13 years since the first American Pie introduced the painfully funny life problems of charaters such as Jim Levenstein and his friends Oz, Stifler and Finch. And although those characters - played by Jason Biggs, Chris Klein and Eddie Kaye Thomas respectively - have grown older by this year’s American Pie: Reunion, they’re certainly no wiser.

The passing years have done little to dampen audience enthusiasm for the American Pie series, either, with Reunion already earning a healthy $128 million and counting at the box-office to date - and the movie hasn’t even opened in all territories yet.

With American Pie: Reunion out in the UK on Wednesday, it was our pleasure to sit with its »

American Pie: Reunion Review

28 April 2012 11:01 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The boys are back in town, looking a little older (some sporting facial hair and others possible plastic surgery), but certainly none the wiser when it comes to women. Jim (Jason Biggs), Oz (Chris Klein), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) are still a bunch of ‘little boys lost’, only to find that they’re far more mature than first thought when compared to The Stiffmeister, Stifler (Seann William Scott) who has never got away from the home town.

We have as much anticipation as the boys to experience a great reunion, and predictable beginning aside to remind us of Jim’s endless troubles in the bedroom department, it’s rather comforting to be back in their awkward presence, and wonder at what the weekend will bring out in them all. The key to this is seeing them revert to type, which they do – exactly as any »
