After escaping the Manson family, she accepted Vincent Bugliosi's offer to be the prosecution's star witness against Charles Manson and his cohorts. Her testimony was considered key in their convictions and she was granted full immunity in exchange for her cooperation.

On August 8, 1969, she was the lookout and getaway driver for Charles Watson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel when they murdered Sharon Tate and four others at the urging of Charles Manson. She claimed she didn't know what they had planned until the killing had started.
