Interview: Director / Writer Petr Jakl Discusses Horror Film Ghoul

23 March 2015 4:43 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Petr Jakl has come a long way from his roots in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He started out with roles in foreign films in the late 1990s and early 2000s and quickly found a spot in Hollywood playing supporting characters in movies like xXx and Avp: Alien vs. Predator. Not content to stay in front of the camera, Jakl has now written and directed two of his own projects. The latest one, Ghoul, is hitting select theaters on March 20th.

I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Jakl while he was busy promoting the film. We talked about the rich history, superstitions, the supernatural leanings of the Ukrainian people, and more about the background of the movie “Ghoul.” Read on to climb inside the head of this up and coming director, writer, producer, and actor.

How did you get involved in Ghoul?

My first movie was a thriller called Kajinek, inspired by »

Prepare to Be Scared: Ghoul Delivers [Review]

19 March 2015 2:46 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

You've definitely seen the set-up of Ghoul before but you've never seen it quite like this and what's better, you probably haven't seen it be this effective in years.

The last found footage movie that got us all excited around here was Barry Levinson's The Bay (review) and though Ghoul is a completely different beast, something about the trailer suggested that this would be better than the rest and indeed, it does not disappoint.

Co-written and directed by actor-turned-director Petr Jákl, Ghoul starts with the typical trope of kids with cameras going somewhere. In this case, we have a group of American documentary filmmakers who hea [Continued ...] »

Possession Thriller Ghoul Benefits from Subtle Scares

17 March 2015 9:00 PM, PDT | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

The possession thriller Ghoul frames its fiction with fact: Weathered Ukrainian women relate stories of cannibalism from the Stalin-caused famine of the 1930s, genuine horrors endured not a century ago.

That grounding in history lends weight to the rest of the film, as an American documentary crew accompanies its local fixer, a translator, and a psychic to the house of Boris, a (fictional) survivor of that cannibalism later accused of murder and cannibalism himself.

Their interview subject doesn’t show, but thanks to an ill-advised séance, the crew becomes trapped in the area around his remote cottage, possibly by the spirit of yet another cannibal (a real-life serial killer named Andrei Chikatilo).
