End of Watch Blu-Ray Review

18 March 2013 7:30 AM, PDT | | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Having grown up as a teen on the troubled streets of South Central Los Angeles, writer and director David Ayer is fast becoming the best chronicler of the crime, social injustice and random violence that forever plagues the city of angels. Since writing the screenplays for Training Day and Dark Blue, Ayer has turned to directing with the underrated Harsh Times, Street Kings and now End of Watch.

End of Watch follows two L.A. patrol cops Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) as they cruise around the streets and apprehend various criminal low lives. Taylor and Zavala stumble on to something much bigger though and find themselves marked for death by a Mexican drug cartel.  Along the way we learn of their hopes, dreams and the loves in their life and how close the two of them are.

DVD Review: 'End of Watch'

18 March 2013 2:55 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★☆☆ A cursory glance at David Ayer's filmography will reveal his propensity for cop dramas, with previous work including such titles as 2001's Training Day (for which he wrote the screenplay) and 2008's Street Kings. The American director was back on the beat again last year for his latest flick, End of Watch (2012), a gritty action-thriller set in Los Angeles which owes much to two exceptional central performances. Our protagonists this time around are Officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), partners and best buds who are duty-bound protect and serve the citizens of the 'City of Angels'.

DVD Review - End of Watch (2012)

18 March 2013 2:41 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

End of Watch, 2012.

Directed by David Ayer.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Natalie Martinez, Anna Kendrick, David Harbour, Frank Grillo, Maurice Compte and America Ferrera.

A pair of Los Angeles cops uncover the workings of a human-trafficking operation and attract the untoward attention of a Mexican Cartel.

The police get a hard time in the movies. Either corrupt scoundrels or militant psychopaths, cinema is mostly bereft of good, honest men fulfilling their duty to protect and serve. In particular, writer and director David Ayer's oeuvre frequently blurs that thin blue line between cop and criminal on the mean streets of La - Training Day (2001), Dark Blue (2003) and Street Kings (2008) chiefly centred upon dysfunctional antiheroes and their questionable morality.

Consequently, End of Watch is something of a breath of fresh air, or even a belated apology to those he so frequently scrutinises. Officers Bryan Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala »

End Of Watch Blu-ray Review

15 February 2013 6:29 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Writer/director David Ayer has more than a passing familiarity with the heroes and villains of law enforcement.  He's been behind the pen of Training Day, S.W.A.T., Dark Blue and Harsh Times, while stepping behind the camera for the latter film, as well as Street Kings. His latest effort, End of Watch, has him pulling double duty, but giving up some camera control to his principal leads Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña.  In bringing some aspects of "found footage" into an action movie following two street cops on their daily grind, Ayer has managed to find another layer of realism that makes his films so enjoyable.  Hit the jump for our breakdown of End of Watch on Blu-ray, including the highlight of Ayer's directorial commentary that makes the film easily worth a repeat viewing. End of Watch follows Officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Peña) from the Lapd locker »

End of the Watch - Blu-ray Review

10 February 2013 8:22 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

The story about two friends, police officers and partners in the mean streets of La, End of the Watch is brilliantly shot - thanks to the documentary style or .found footage. that has become popular in recent years. The film has a gritty realism that hooks you from the opening moments. The ending breaks some of the emotional investment of the audience, but the film is still one of the best police dramas in years. The two police officers, young and on the brink of the rest of their lives, are Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena). Mike is married and he and his wife are expecting a child while Brian is single. Throughout the »
