Jim Henson Company to Produce S. Craig Zahler’s ‘Hug Chickpenny’
The Jim Henson Company is coming on board to produce S. Craig Zahler’s movie adaptation of the orphan story “Hug Chickpenny: The Panegyric of an Anomalous Child.”

The designers at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop will work with Zahler to create and build the animatronic puppet versions of the titular character, Hug. Zahler will also direct and produce along with Dallas Sonnier of Cinestate.

The story, described as a gothic Dickensian take on “The Elephant Man,” centers on a hopeful, physically asymmetrical boy who faces challenges in an orphanage and the weird and dangerous world outside. The white-haired baby inspires both ire and pity at the orphanage, until the day that an elderly eccentric adopts him as a pet.

Zahler is the writer-director of “Bone Tomahawk” and “Brawl in Cell Block 99.” The latter starred Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, and Don Johnson and premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2017. His police thriller, “Dragged Across

Batman: Gotham By Gaslight Trailer Promises An Awesome Animated Outing

DC’s Elseworlds series were some of my favorite comics as a kid. Why would I want to get wrapped up in the stodgy, never-ending plots of Death and Return of Superman or Knightfall when I could enjoy Batman becoming a vampire in Batman & Dracula: Red Rain, a Communist Superman in Red Son or the weird alt-dc Universe of Jla: The Nail?

The originator of this label was Brian Augustin and Mike Mignola’s excellent Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, which transposes Bruce Wayne/Batman to the late 19th century and has him tangle with Jack the Ripper (and was subsequently ranked as the 11th greatest Batman graphic novel of all-time by IGN). Clearly, someone at DC agrees with me, because 2018 will see the arrival of an animated adaptation of the story and, from the looks of the trailer above, it’s going to be awesome.

Apparently hewing pretty close to the original,

Gotham by Gaslight Trailer Has Batman Fighting Jack the Ripper

Gotham by Gaslight Trailer Has Batman Fighting Jack the Ripper
The first trailer for the animated adaptation of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight has arrived. It's taken the live-action DC universe a little while to truly find its footing, but, a few missteps aside, the animated DC movies have been truly terrific for a very long time. The next animated DC adventure has Batman facing off against Jack the Ripper at the turn of the century and it's going to be a bloody, action-packed, R-rated adventure.

Warner Bros. confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con that Gotham by Gaslight was going to be the next classic DC story to get the animated movie treatment. While this is just a teaser trailer, it looks like director Sam Liu has done something that looks to be pretty faithful to the source material. It certainly gives us a version of Batman we haven't seen on screen before, animated or otherwise. It looks like this could be

S. Craig Zahler interview: Brawl In Cell Block 99, Bone Tomahawk

Simon Brew Oct 20, 2017

Writer/director S. Craig Zahler talks to us about his films, his approach, and Ridley Scott adapting his work…

I loved Brawl In Cell Block 99, the second feature film from novelist and filmmaker S. Craig Zahler. His first? Bone Tomahawk. I love that too, for the record. Zahler already feels like a very different voice in American film, a man content for his budgets to be low and control over his material to be high.
