HBO on Friday rolled out a series of new network bumpers, enlisting the casts of some of its biggest shows to appear in character and harmonize on the signature static intro that precedes all of its original programming. As you can tell, John Oliver isn’t all that into it.

“What is the point of this whole concept?” the Last Week Tonight host asks at the top of the video above. “Nobody tunes into HBO for static. That is not a beloved sound. »

Adam Pally & Jim O’Heir Defend Controversial Team Name in Sports Mockumentary ‘The 5th Quarter’ — Watch

26 January 2017 10:23 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In the final episode of go90’s sports mockumentary “The 5th Quarter,” Adam Pally (“The Mindy Project”) and Jim O’Heir (“Parks and Recreation”) guest star as defenders of the unfortunately named sports team, the Sheboygan Jews. The short form online comedy blends big name comedy talent with major athlete cameos to tell parody sports documentaries in a smart premise that is perfectly pitched for the growing online platform.

In addition to Pally and O’Heir, comedians like J.B. Smoove, Jerry O’Connell, Chris Parnell, and George Lopez all appear in the series. On the athlete side, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is joined by sportscasters Kenny Mayne and Ahmad Rashad, Los Angeles Clipper Blake Griffin, former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman, Olympic figure skating gold medalist Tara Lipinski, and many more.

Sundance Film Review: ‘The Polka King’

23 January 2017 1:22 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

One of those conspicuously talented comics who nonetheless can be tricky to cast, Jack Black has rather surprisingly found some of his best big-screen roles portraying liberally dramatized versions of real people, à la “School of Rock” and “Bernie.” (No, “Drunk History” doesn’t count.) Featuring Black’s most eccentric true-life character yet, “The Polka King” amply plays to its star’s strengths, yielding a hilariously tough-to-believe biopic that should easily prove one of the bigger commercial breakouts of Sundance’s 2017 edition.

Co-directors Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky’s affectionately farcical comedy is based on a loopy 2009 documentary about Jan Lewan, a colorful Polish émigré turned “Polka King of Pennsylvania” turned convicted Ponzi-scheme felon. Perfectly cast down the line, this bizarre tale of the American Dream gone kitschily awry introduces Black’s Jan in 1990, when he’d be well on his way to realizing that dream, if only the finances would cooperate. »

Kristen Wiig and Jerry Seinfeld Eat Pie On Season 9 Premiere of ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ — Watch

5 January 2017 2:59 PM, PST | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The latest season of Jerry Seinfeld’s Emmy-nominated web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” started off with a bang, landing Kristen Wiig in the passenger seat of a 1964 Volvo sedan, chosen for Wiig because of her Norwegian descent and penchant for old Volvos. In the Season 9 premiere, Seinfeld takes Wiig to House of Pies in Los Angeles, who seems utterly thrilled at the choice. As the Volvo whirs, the banter kicks off, and it’s off to the races for another season of the show that offers a delightful glimpse into how the comedy sausage (or pie, in this case) is made.

Seinfeld and Wiig have an easy rapport, as he does with most of his guests. Rather than stick to a traditional interview style, Seinfeld butters Wiig up not only with pie but by throwing in his own jokes when conversation lulls. A non-sequitur about orthodontists opens up a nice back and forth, »
