‘State of Marriage’ Documentary Bought by The Orchard

11 January 2016 8:28 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Orchard has acquired worldwide rights to the marriage-equality documentary “The State of Marriage” from Floating World Pictures, Variety has learned exclusively.

The film, which will be available on iTunes and VOD on May 31, chronicles the two-decade long struggle in Vermont that helped build the foundation for the entire marriage equality movement.

The film spotlights the work of lawyers Susan Murray, Beth Robinson and Mary Bonauto: the trio that represented plaintiffs in Baker v. Vermont in 1999. The Vermont Supreme Court found that the state’s prohibition on same-sex marriage denied rights granted by the Vermont Constitution — making Vermont among the first states to grant same sex-couples legal recognition.

Vermont became the first state to legalize marriage equality by legislative vote in 2009.

The film features civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, Gov. Howard Dean, playwright Terrence McNally, Freedom to Marry founder Even Wolfson and Human Rights Campaign national field director Marty Rouse. »
