First Look: New Films Starring Ryan Reynolds, Nicholas Hoult, Brit Marling, Asa Butterfield, Kit Harington & More

16 May 2014 11:16 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The Cannes Film Festival is in full swing, and that means lots of deals, attachments, signings, news and yes, first looks. And there’s a bunch. First up is probably our most anticipated of the lot because of the filmmakers involved. Here’s a first look at “Mississippi Grind” from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the directors of “Half Nelson” and “Sugar.” They stumbled a little with “It's Kind of a Funny Story,” but everyone can stumble when your taste seems to be as omnivorous and diverse as theirs (they’ve done a drama, a sports film and a mental illness comedy so far). In a movie about con-men and gamblers, Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn feature as a pair of “oddball strangers” who hit the road together to try to make a high-stakes poker tournament in New Orleans. Evidently the influences included ‘70s classics like Robert Altman’s “California Split »

The pair plays two unlikely gamblers who form a bond while on a road trip to New Orleans, where they hope to continue a winning streak. Along the way, they reconnect with old girlfriends, have a run-in with a loan shark, and end up losing some of their winnings in a most unfortunate way as they make a few ill-advised bets. Check out the duo as they head for the tracks, in this drama also starring Analeigh Tipton, Sienna Miller, Robin Weigert and Alfre Woodard.

First Look: Ryan Reynolds does the 'Mississippi Grind' -- Exclusive

15 May 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Southern drifters, gamblers, lost souls, and con-men populate the seedy world of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Mississippi Grind.

Starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn as a pair of “oddball strangers” who hit the road together to try to make a high-stakes poker tournament in New Orleans, Fleck says he and Boden just wanted to make a film that felt like those that continue to inspire them — including classic ’70s fare like Robert Altman’s California Split and Jerry Schatzberg’s Scarecrow.

In Mississippi Grind, Reynolds’ Curtis is a charismatic nomad. “He drifts from town to town and casino »

Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #48. Mia Hansen-Love’s Eden

28 February 2014 6:30 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Eden

Director: Mia Hansen-Love

Writers: Mia Hansen-Love, Sven Hansen-Love

Producers: Charles Gillibert, Jimmy Price

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available

Cast: Greta Gerwig, Brady Corbet, Laura Smet, Golshifteh Farahani, Pauline Etienne

After winning the Un Certain Regard Grand Jury prize for her 2009 sophomore feature The Father of My Children, Mia Hansen-Love (who is married to Olivier Assayas), has quickly become one of the most notable directors working with her lauded trio of films. Her latest was co-written by her brother, who was a deejaying in France in the 90s. An exciting and internationally mixed cast (American notables Gerwig and Corbet join Iranian actress Farhani and a slew of known French players, like Smet and up and comer Etienne) should help broaden interests here as well.

Gist: A chronicle of the electronic music boom of the 1990s.

Release Date: We’re hoping to see Hansen-Love invited to the Main Competition at Cannes. »

Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #49. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck’s Mississippi Grind

28 February 2014 6:15 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Mississippi Grind

Directors: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck

Writers: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck

Producers: Electric City Ent.’s Lynette Howell and Jamie Patricof, Sycamore PicturesBen Nearn and Tom Rice

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Analeigh Tipton, Sienna Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, Alfre Woodard

In our books, the Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are two for three in their relatively young filmmaking career. The tonally deficient adaptation of Ned Vizzini’s It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010) landed like a dud, but this doesn’t take away from the pure, almost direct cinema portraits in Half Nelson (2006) and sophomore film Sugar (2008), both of those films are like riding your bike without holding onto the handles: unfiltered worlds captured with a graceful air of unknown. The key ingredient here with Mississippi Grind is Ben Mendelsohn – we’ve yet to see him in an off performance since Animal Kingdom »

Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #50. Jessica Hausner’s Amour Fou

28 February 2014 6:00 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Amour Fou

Director: Jessica Hausner

Writer: Jessica Hausner

Producers: Martin Gschlacht, Antonin Svoboda, Bruno Wagner, Bady Minck, Alexander Dumreicher-Ivanceanu, Philippe Bober

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available

Cast: Christian Friedel, Birte Schnoeink, Stephan Grossmann

We’re excited to see Hausner’s followup to her excellent third feature, 2009’s Lourdes, which starred Sylvie Testud and Lea Seydoux. While many had been hoping her latest would have been ready for a late 2013 release, we can look forward to seeing her latest get a prime slot at a major festival. Starring Christian Friedel, who many will recognize from The White Ribbon, Hausner seems to be positioning a new take on the period piece.

Gist: Amour Fou is inspired by the life and death of the poet Heinrich von Kleist and his partner in death, Henriette Vogel. However, rather than being a biographical portrait, the film is to be understood as a parallel about the ambivalence of love. »
