DVD Review: 'The Iceman'

30 September 2013 7:11 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★☆☆ Richard Kuklinski was an infamous contract killer doing the dirty work of various New York crime organisations throughout the sixties and seventies. Estimates of how many lives he ended during his career vary from 100 to 250 according to different accounts. Based on a screenplay by Morgan Land and director Ariel Vromen, The Iceman (2012) follows Kuklinski from his unsettling appreciation for murder to his settled family life. Michael Shannon gamely inhabits the lead role, but this by-the-numbers gangster flick fails to truly get beneath the skin of its subject despite remaining dramatically engaging throughout.

Unbeknownst to his wife Deborah (Winona Ryder), with whom he is awkwardly charming and affable, Kuklinski (Shannon) has a fatally violent streak and works in knock-off pornography. One night he gains the attention of local mobster Roy Demeo (gangster movie stalwart Ray Liotta), when they have a run-in during which Richie exhibits a cool head and stone-cold demeanour. »

‘The Iceman’ Review

Stars: Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, Winona RyderDavid SchwimmerRay Liotta, Robert Davi, John Ventimiglia, James Franco, McKaley Miller, Stephen Dorff | Written by Ariel Vromen, Morgan Land | Directed by Ariel Vromen

“He is such a cold blooded killer, they call him ‘The Iceman’”

Directed by Israeli’s Ariel Vromen (Danika, Rx) and starring Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice), The Iceman is a biopic based on the life and events surrounding Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer.

Set in the mid-sixties through to the eighties in New York and New Jersey, The Iceman begins with Kuklinski on a date with Deborah (Ryder) and you see that there’s a warmth to Kuklinski’s character and a sense of humour. It’s nice to see that the film, even in its opening moments, isn’t shying away from showing the grey areas of the story. »

'The Iceman' review: Michael Shannon chills as real-life hitman

6 June 2013 8:17 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: Ariel Vromen; Screenwriter Morgan Land, Ariel Vromen; Starring: Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, James Franco; Running time: 105 mins; Certificate: 15

A divided and uneven drama to match its protagonist's divided and chaotic state of mind, Ariel Vromen's The Iceman does nothing to reinvent the 1970s New York mobster genre, but grips thanks to a ferocious and nuanced turn from Michael Shannon.

At the time of his arrest in 1986, Richard Kuklinski had spent more than two decades working as a contract killer for the New York mafia, although he claimed to have committed his first murder long before he made a career out of it. What's most remarkable about his story is how he kept the truth from his wife (played here by Winona Ryder) and held down an outwardly respectable suburban life. It's this schism that Vronen seems most interested in exploring; he had Shannon film »

Michael Shannon: 'I studied relentlessly for The Iceman' - video

5 June 2013 4:04 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Michael Shannon stars in this week's taut true-crime thriller The Iceman, playing ruthless contract killer Richard Kuklinski, who is believed to have murdered more than 100 people in the Us between 1948 and his arrest in 1986.

Digital Spy sat down with Shannon to discuss his research for the role, and why he doesn't necessarily view Kuklinski as cold-hearted.

Winona Ryder co-stars as Kuklinski's wife Deborah, while Ray Liotta, Chris Evans, James Franco and David Schwimmer are among the supporting cast.

Ariel Vromen directed the film from a script he co-wrote with Morgan Land.

Shannon also discussed Man of Steel, revealing that having seen the finished film, he believes that Henry Cavill was born to play Superman.

The Iceman is out in the UK this Friday (June 7). »

The Iceman – The Review

17 May 2013 4:50 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Michael Shannon is one hell of an actor. However, even he can’t save the bad writing of The Iceman.

Here’s the deal. What they are trying to accomplish is to make “The Iceman” or Richard Kuklinski a compelling character that you feel compassion for. The story is based on Kuklinski, so he is the main focus. The murders, unfortunately, fall a bit flat. Despite focusing on his hundreds of kills, they shine more of the limelight on his love for his family. I feel that some might be disappointed with the lack of focus on the murders, but the film itself concentrates more on the man. The script feels a bit weak still. All of the compassion felt for Kuklinski comes from Michael Shannon. He is a fantastic actor who offers a complete dimension of layers. Still, the writing doesn’t begin to do justice to what they »

‘The Iceman’ boasts a solid ensemble, but a weak, rushed script

The Iceman

Directed by Ariel Vromen

Written by Ariel Vromen and Morgan Land

USA, 2012

The Iceman exists in a strange kind of cinematic purgatory, in which reside those movies that are both too rushed and too slow. With actors like Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, and Winona Ryder among the key players, this period piece about a particularly sociopathic Mob enforcer’s rise to some level of infamy is, at best, decent. But the script fast-forwards through so much of its lead character’s life and allows seemingly mundane events play out in near-slow motion, making The Iceman a drawn-out experience.

Shannon is Richard Kuklinski, a hulking but quiet young man whose job working at a porno lab circa 1964 leads him to working as a cold-blooded hitman for mid-level mobster Roy DeMeo (Ray Liotta), taking out any number of people who’ve done Roy or his bosses wrong. Kuklinski balances his »

The Iceman is a Decent Crime Film that Fails to Live up to its Premise

The Iceman

Directed by Ariel Vromen

Written by Ariel Vromen and Morgan Land

USA, 2013

It’s kind of baffling that it’s taken this long to make a movie about Richard Kuklinski. Quiet family man is secretly a prolific murderer working as a hitman for the Jersey mob, completely unbeknownst to his family? That’s the kind of thing Hollywood loves, give him nymphomaniac wife and Lou Gehrig’s disease and you got a three picture series with Robert Downey Jr. and Naomi Watts, no problem. Maybe throw in Jerry Stiller as the comedically Jewish dad.

Instead, we’ve got The Iceman, a somewhat under-the-radar thriller starring Michael Shannon, Ray Liotta, Ray Liotta’s increasingly weird hairline, Winona Ryder, Chris Evans and directed by fairly unknown filmmaker Ariel Vromen.

The short version is that the film is a fairly average mob/thriller/drama affair that wisely focuses on the human »

‘The Iceman’ spellbinds with chilling focus and calculated brutality

The Iceman

Directed by Ariel Vromen

Written by Ariel Vromen and Morgan Land

2012, USA

Chronicling the complicated balance between work and family that prolific real life contract killer Richard Kuklinski carried on for decades, The Iceman paralyzes the audience purely with Michael Shannon’s unrelentingly intense performance. When cloaked in silence his unnerving stare speaks volumes more than any of the periphery characters who happen to drift in and out of scenes around him. He is a force of terror and subtle affection to behold. While Kuklinski claimed to have murdered over 100 people, the far more remarkable part of his story is how vehemently he insulated his family from his criminal underworld and true nature. Director Ariel Vromen conveys here how he didn’t use them as a cover but as emotional security against the monstrous people he was in business with, people seemingly less monstrous than himself. 'The Iceman' (2013) Movie Review

3 May 2013 11:03 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Iceman hints at ideas that would have made it far more intriguing than it actually is. We see different sides to the murderer at the center of the story from his pained past and the demons he fights throughout, but in the end the focus lands squarely on his murders. These murders may define this man in the media, but to explore him as a cinematic character additional depth must be added, otherwise all you have is a man that can't give in to the urge to kill people, leaving very little else to explore or enjoy. Based on Anthony Bruno's novel "amazon asin="0595482163" text="The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer"", The Iceman centers on Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon), a man with a penchant for killing and he himself claims having killed over 100 people in the New Jersey area. We watch as he falls in love, »

'The Iceman' review: James Franco, Winona Ryder and Michael Shannon star in a chilling look at a killer

2 May 2013 6:00 AM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

The phrase "banality of evil" popped up when historians sought to explain the bland men and women who carried out the Holocaust, when critics looked for ways to describe the often dull villains that Alfred Hitchcock astutely observed were not all that interesting, outside of their crimes.

Richard Kuklinski could be banality of evil's poster-child. A poker-faced family man, from New Jersey no less, this real-life monster carried out cold-blooded killings for the mob for over a decade. Nothing glamorous about it, no sexual-sadistic glee evident on his part. Just a job of work, a cold calculation on who had to die, and how that death could be achieved without Kuklinski getting caught.

Michael Shannon has the voice and face of a mass murderer in this film, the sort of man who can tell he soon-to-be wife (Winona Ryder) "I dub cartoons for a living," when in reality he duplicates porn films for the mob. »
