- On April 29, 1975 while covering the Vietnam War, he was on one of the last helicopters to depart the United States embassy in Saigon as the city fell to the Communists.
- He was driving his Mini Cooper in Amagansett, New York when he collided with a propane tanker. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
