A career soldier, he fought in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and in the
Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, in which he was assistant chief of the
general staff. Exiled for his German sympathies in 1917 to Italy, along
with most other prominent figures of Constantine I's government, when
Greece joined the Allies in World War I.
