Walton Goggins Is the Villain in Tomb Raider Reboot

7 December 2016 12:52 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Now that Alicia Vikander has signed on to play Lara Croft in MGM's Tomb Raider reboot, the studio has found the project's main villain. Walton Goggins is in final negotiations to join the cast as the primary bad guy, although no details about the character have been revealed. It was recently confirmed that this reboot will be based on Square Enix's 2013 video game reboot, that followed a younger Lara Croft at the age of 21, as she goes on her very first adventure.

Variety broke the news on this casting, which comes just weeks after producer Graham King revealed the first plot details. The story will follow Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft as she goes searching for her long-missing father. Director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) revealed in March that this will be an origin story, and that he wants to portray Lara Croft as a "real human being" in this reboot. »

Tomb Raider Reboot Gets Spring 2018 Release Date

7 July 2016 3:01 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Now that Alicia Vikander has been set to play Lara Croft in MGM and Warner Bros.' long-awaited Tomb Raider reboot, the studios have finally set a release date. Warner Bros. will release Tomb Raider on March 16, 2018, a date the studio had previously set aside for a DC Comics project, which most believed was The Flash. That project recently lost its director, Seth Grahame-Smith, who was quickly replaced by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), but the superhero movie doesn't have an official release date at this time.

The Hollywood Reporter has news of this release date, which comes just a few months after Warner Bros. made a different release date shift. Back in April, Warner Bros. pushed its Jungle Book sequel into 2018, while setting an October 6, 2017 release date for an untitled event film. There had been speculation that this slot could be used for the Tomb Raider reboot, which, at the time, »

Tomb Raiding: Rebooting Lara and Where She May Plunder Next

Tony Black on the new Tomb Raider movie reboot…

It’s been a seriously long time coming but, at last, we have a new Lara Croft. Despite Daisy Ridley aggressively campaigning in recent weeks for the part, recent Oscar winner and hot property Alicia Vikander will now be headlining the long-gestated Tomb Raider reboot. It’s potentially superb casting, taking a celebrated actress who very much looks the part, capable of a cut glass English accent, who could revitalise what already should have been one of the biggest and best action adventure franchises out there, were it not for two underwhelming movies that have barely lingered in the memory. Angelina Jolie actually deserved better as Lady Croft, an iconic actress in a legendary role who was saddled with average directors, scripts and plotlines in original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and later The Cradle of Life. Vikander, we can hope, will »

Warner Bros. has found its new Lara Croft! Last month, Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout star Daisy Ridley confirmed that she had engaged in discussions with Warner Bros., MGM and Gk Films to star as Lara Croft in their highly-anticipated Tomb Raider reboot. We never heard anything official about the actress' casting, but, at the time, we also hadn't heard about any other actresses who were in the running for the coveted role. Today, it was announced that it's not Daisy Ridley who landed the role, but Ex Machina and The Danish Girl star Alicia Vikander who will play the iconic video game adventurer.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the actress has signed on to this reboot, which will focus on a much younger Lara Croft. We reported last month that this reboot will serve as an origin story for Lara, with the screenplay being adapted from the »

8 April 2016 1:30 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. pushed their highly-anticipated The Jungle Book: Origins out of its October 6, 2017 release date, moving it up by over one full year to October 19, 2018. The studio moved an "untitled event film" in the October 6, 2017 slot, but no details were given for the project that was replacing The Jungle Book: Origins. Today we have a new report from Heroic Hollywood, which claims that the movie set for release next October is their Tomb Raider reboot.

The site reports that, one month ago today, Warner Bros. registered the domain TheTombRaiderMovie.com. We also reported last month that Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout star Daisy Ridley is being eyed to star as Lara Croft. The actress later confirmed that she has been in discussions to play this iconic video game character, but it isn't known if her deal has been finalized or not.

The actress is currently shooting »
