New York theater makers: are you looking to add more networking events and workshops to your schedule? The Farm Theater offers bi-monthly opportunities to gather for intimate discussions led by various industry professionals—completely free of charge. Attendees of Bullpen Sessions include emerging artists and established thespians, while topics of discussion span branding and marketing, staging solo shows, the art of casting, and much more. These events are geared toward established strong community connections as well as spreading awareness to aspiring theater professionals. Past invited speakers include such industry vets as Tessa Laneve, Paul Schnee, Halley Feiffer, Qui Nguyen, and Anne Washburn. 2016 Spirit Award Winners Announced

Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards, the La Film Festival and Film Independent at Lacma, handed out top honors to Spotlight, Beasts of No Nation and Room at this afternoon's 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards. Carol, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Krisha, The Look of Silence, Son of Saul and Tangerine also received awards at the ceremony, which was held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica. Spotlight received the Robert Altman Award. In addition to being the celebration that honors artist-driven films made with an economy of means by filmmakers whose films embody diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision, the Spirit Awards is the primary fundraiser for Film Independent's year-round programs. 'Spotlight' rules 31st Spirit Awards

The Catholic Church sex abuse drama earned five awards on Saturday including best film in a great night for Participant Media that saw Film Independent voters slap the Academy in the face and hand its two male acting prizes to Beasts Of No Nation.

Open Road/Participant Media’s Spotlight also landed best director for Tom McCarthy at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards held in a tent on Santa Monica beach, as well as screenplay for Josh Singer and McCarthy, editing for Tom McArdle and the previously announced Robert Altman Award for best ensemble.

Voting members honoured Abraham Attah with best male lead and Idris Elba with best supporting male for their roles in Netflix/Participant Media/Red Crown’s child soldier drama Beasts Of No Nation.

The pair were popular winners and their triumph offered perhaps some redemption after the Academy triggered the #OscarsSoWhite backlash when it omitted them – and other non-white actors – from its Oscar »

The Casting Society of America has announced the nominees of its 31st annual Artios Awards. J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is among the nominees in its Big Budget Drama category. And why not? The film cast the fantastic unknowns Daisy Ridley and John Boyega along with franchise veterans Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill. All to stellar effect mind you!

According to its site, "Artios" from the ancient Greek, meaning "perfectly fitted." So how fitting! Here's more info on the Artios Awards:

‘Star Wars,’ ‘The Big Short,’ ‘Carol’ Among Casting Society of America Nominees

The Casting Society of America has nominated 34 feature films in seven categories for the 31st annual Artios Awards. Among the contenders are Oscar hopefuls, including “The Big Short,” “Brooklyn,” “Carol,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Straight Outta Compton” and “Trumbo,” as well as small-scale dark horses such as “Infinitely Polar Bear” and “It Follows.”

Final ballots have been distributed to the 600 Csa members, with voting to continue through Friday, Jan. 8. All winners for film, television, theater, short film and new media categories will be announced at the 31st annual Artios Awards on Jan. 21, with award ceremonies being held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Hard Rock Café in New York.

Among the individuals with multiple noms are Douglas AibelHenry Russell Bergstein, Nina Gold, Meagan Lewis, Natalie Lyon, Francine Maisler, Adam Richards, Carolyn Pickman, Kevin Reher, Paul Schnee, Bernard Telsey and Fiona Weir.
