Political TV Takes the Spotlight at Garden Brunch

25 April 2015 2:26 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Washington — The showbiz presence for White House Correspondents Assn. weekend is less visible this year — in favor of stars who have some connection to D.C.

The reasons for this have varied. The novelty of hobnobbing with members of President Obama’s administration has worn off, and the event has become enough of a crush of people that some have decided to take a pass.

Not so, though, for Michael Kelly, who plays Doug Stamper on “House of Cards.”

“Talking to the most interesting people in the world, it’s great,” he said, after posing for yet another selfie before heading in to the Garden Brunch, one of the longer-lasting traditions of the weekend.

“I am so grateful,” he said, when asked if he’s getting tired of the selfie requests. “It’s an opportunity to meet and talk to people that you don’t normally get to talk to. »

Tapper, who joined CNN in January 2013 from ABC News, will be the new host of “State of the Union,” the Time Warner-owned outlet’s Sunday politics-focused talk show, Tapper confirmed on Twitter on Friday morning. He replaces Candy Crowley, who anchored the show for years and left CNN late last year. A rotating group of hosts have filled her seat in the interim.

Tapper is expected to start the new role in June, while continuing to anchor his late-afternoon weekday program, “The Lead.”

He will take the reins of the program as several new faces surface at the Sunday-morning programs, which have long been viewed as a venue for sophisticated discussion of complex issues. TV News Moves Beyond TV Set To Cover Obama’s State of The Union

20 January 2015 8:34 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Tonight’s coverage of President Obama’s State of the Union address may serve to remind Americans anew they no longer need a TV set to experience this annual political event.

Scott Pelley will hold forth on CBS at 9 p.m., no surprise, but will also appear an hour earlier on Cbsn, the CBS News streaming-video effort, where he and a larger CBS News team will, starting at 8 p.m., preview the TV coverage – which will also be streamed live. Over at MSNBC, Krystal Ball, Dorian Warren and Josh Barro will offer analysis of the event as it happens – but on the cable-news outlet’s new Shift streaming-video hub, all as Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews host more traditional coverage on MSNBC.

CBS and MSNBC aren’t the only outlets offering coverage of the speech in multi-platform fashion, but they are putting two nascent distribution methods into the minute-by-minute fray of the current news cycle. »

With ‘Ashamed by U.S. Leaders’ Op-Ed, Tapper Treads Line Between Anchor and Opinion-Maker

13 January 2015 8:32 AM, PST | Mediaite - TV | See recent Mediaite - TV news »

In a cable news world that is fueled less by the Joe Friday Dragnet version straight news (Just the facts, ma'am) and more by provocative opinion, Jake Tapper is one of the few who is difficult to get a read on for two reasons: 1) He doesn't appear to be left or right 2) Only very periodically does he inject his own beliefs into a debate So when Tapper does offer up a strong opinion, more than a few people take notice. We saw it over the summer during the first round of the Ferguson protests, when the CNN anchor openly criticized the show of police force during a live shot from the field: »
