When meeting Norwegian officials he likes to state that "I am the highest ranking Norwegian in the White House," on account of his ancestory; his great-grandfather Olaf I. Rove emigrated from Norway and his White House office is decorated with pictures of his ancestor. In light of this, Norway's foreign minister decided to dig up documents in the Norwegian National Archive, written by Rove's great-grandfather and in May 2004 Karl Rove was given an original hand-written letter from 1905, where Olaf I. Rove asks the Norwegian government to become the Norwegian Vice-Consul in Milwaukee, where he lived with his family (he was appointed to the post and later received the Royal Order of St. Olav for his distinguished work).
