In 2005, at the end of Russell T Davies' first season of Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston bowed out as the Ninth Doctor and David Tennant made his first appearance as the Tenth Doctor. While Eccleston was a tough act to follow, having enjoyed riotous success in introducing the Time Lord to a whole new generation of fans, Tennant quickly proved himself a firm fan favorite in the role. He shared his first season as the Doctor with Billie Piper's Rose Tyler, who had stayed on after Eccleston's departure. He went on to travel in the Tardis with Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones and Catherine Tate's Donna Noble, as well as an array of other friends and part-time companions.

Ncuti Gatwa subtly responds to reports of Millie Gibson leaving Doctor Who with a heartwarming Instagram post. Millie Gibson's departure from the show after season 14 has been reported, with Varada Sethu set to replace her. Gibson's exit is not uncommon for Doctor Who companions, suggesting it may have been planned as a shorter story arc.
Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa breaks his silence over reports that his co-star Millie Gibson is leaving the show. Gatwa made his debut in the 60th-anniversary special as the Fifteenth Doctor, while Gibson appeared in the 2023 Christmas special as Ruby Sunday. The latter episode set up Ruby to become the Fifteenth Doctor's first companion. She will be his main companion in season 14, which has already finished filming. It was believed the pair were filming season 15 together beginning in October 2023, making the news that Gibson was being written out of the series quite surprising.

Steven Moffat oversaw the Eleventh and Twelfth iterations of the Doctor Who series. The two iterations of the Doctor, played by Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, are very different. There may be a strong narrative reason why the Doctor changes so much from his Eleventh iteration to the Twelfth.
With the return of Russell T Davies for a new era of Doctor Who, fans of this 60-year-old storytelling universe are revisiting their favorite Doctors from eras past. Immediately following the first four seasons of Davies' first run on Doctor Who, Steven Moffat took over to shape the modern show around the next incarnations of the character. However, despite having the same showrunner, both the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors were developed very differently from one another. Warning: contains Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “The Star Beast” and several modern Doctor Who episodes
The internet is still whirring after that explosive first episode of the three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, with the return of David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and his beloved ex-companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).
There was certainly a lot to take in: “The Star Beast” saw an alien spaceship crash-landing in London, the arrival of the adorably fluffy Meep and sinister, bug-eyed Wrarth Warriors, the return of Unit (the international intelligence taskforce that investigates alien activity), and the very real threat that if Donna remembers who The Doctor is, she’ll die.
We also met Donna’s family, including her husband Shaun and daughter Rose, whom we eventually learn has genetically absorbed some of the metacrisis that threatened Donna’s life, subconsciously giving her some of The Doctor and Donna’s memories.

Doctor Who's 60th-anniversary specials offer the perfect opportunity to bring back beloved characters and ignite nostalgia for fans of the show. The return of iconic duos like Rose Tyler and the Meta-Crisis Doctor, Martha Jones and Mickey Smith, and Susan Foreman and David Campbell would be thrilling to see. The potential reunions of characters like River Song and Jack Harkness, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, and Clara Oswald and the Twelfth Doctor would melt fans' hearts and make for a truly wholesome cameo experience.
Doctor Who's 60th anniversary is fast approaching, and while there's plenty of information regarding the cast, there's still hope for the return of more former stars. Catherine Tate as Donna Noble and David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor are reprising their roles for the series' three-special celebration, and they are far from being the only actors honoring Doctor Who's legacy on its big day.

Warning: contains minor Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “Wild Blue Yonder”
We’ve been speculating about the 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials for well over a year now, with one detail after another being drip-fed to fans via announcements and trailers, and episode one “The Star Beast” having recently had a starry premiere screening, but with mere weeks to go we still know next to nothing about the second episode, “Wild Blue Yonder”.
This was a deliberate choice by showrunner Russell T Davies. Speaking in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies revealed his dream that the second special would air with no previews whatsoever:
“This is the secret one,” Davies explained, “I wanted to take one of the Specials and say ‘Let’s protect this one. Let’s try to reveal nothing about it’”.

Tales of the Tardis opens up exciting possibilities for future episodes, with various Doctor and companion pairings to explore. Reuniting characters like Jenny and the Tenth Doctor could provide closure and new storylines for Doctor Who fans. Bringing back Martha Jones and the Master would offer more insight into Martha's side of the story from when Harold Saxon took over the world.
Tales of the Tardis opens a whole new universe of Doctor Who, with many tantalizing pairings now possible should future episodes happen. In preparation for Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special, the BBC has released Tales Of The Tardis. The show follows pairings of classic Doctor Who Doctors and companions, and not only involves the actors reprising their roles, but also combines individual older episodes to create new anthology stories.

Doctor Who is about to welcome back a whole host of familiar faces to mark the sci-fi series' 60th anniversary. Three specials, releasing weekly starting November 25, will mark the milestone and see David Tennant and Catherine Tate return in lead roles. Tennant previously played the Tenth Doctor and is now returning as the Fourteenth Doctor, whereas Tate is reprising her role as companion Donna Noble.
Jacqueline King's Sylvia Noble and the late Bernard Cribbins' Wilfred Mott (Donna's mother and grandfather respectively) are also set to return for the 60th anniversary. Jemma Redgrave is reprising her Doctor Who role of Unit's Kate Stewart, while Neil Patrick Harris is putting a new spin on classic villain, the Toymaker. However, fans suspect there may be even more characters from Doctor Who's past making surprise returns in the upcoming specials.

Back before Season 3 and during Season 4, something seemed to be bringing the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) together. It all made sense in the two-part Season 4 finale. Now, for Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary in November, with Tennant (now the Fourteenth Doctor) and Tate back, destiny is coming for Donna and bringing them together once more. Ahead of the three special episodes, below is what you need to know about Donna Noble, as well as why Tennant returning as the Fourteenth, not Tenth, Doctor shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise. How the Doctor and Donna Met At the end of “Doomsday,” after the Tenth Doctor said goodbye to Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) in a parallel world, Donna, in her wedding dress, suddenly appeared on the Tardis. But it wasn’t until after another companion’s (Freema Agyeman‘s Martha Jones) adventures with the...

How can a series that started on such a strong note take such a colossal nosedive?
It was a question worth pondering well before New Amsterdam Season 5 premiered, and frankly, it's an inquiry that still haunts us long after the series signed off.
For those whose introduction to this once great series was via binge-watching on Netflix, they'll be treated, though it's more trick than treat, to the final 13-episode season of this medical drama, which the streamer added September 20.
Sadly, they'll experience the same disappointment, disbelief, and frustration as many of us.
By now, it's a canon event in which they'll have to experience themselves to truly understand how a series that once made us laugh, cry, and moved us beyond measure became the forbidden title not worth uttering without a hint of disdain.
In short, New Amsterdam Season 5 is not good. It's downright awful.

It would be insulting to overlook Martha Jones in Doctor Who's 60th anniversary specials, especially since she was absent from the 50th anniversary episode. Martha is already David Tennant's most underrated companion, displaying unwavering determination and intelligence throughout her time on the show. Speculations suggest that Martha may have a secret role in the upcoming specials, potentially setting up her return to the Doctor Who universe through a Unit spinoff series.
What's known about the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who hints at the insulting omission of the 10th Doctor's most underrated companion. Following the conclusion of Jodie Whittaker's era as the Doctor, audiences witnessed her regeneration back into David Tennant, who originally played the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010. With Tennant's version of the character coming back into focus for the anniversary, it's no surprise that the show intends to incorporate at least one significant figure from his past.

Even when we take into consideration just the new series, settling the matter of who is Doctor Who's greatest companion is no easy task. Some, like Donna (Catherine Tate) and Rose (Billie Piper), are such fan favorites that they can be downright impossible to compare, while others, such as poor Martha (Freema Agyeman), receive an unwarranted amount of hate. Then there are, of course, those companions who didn't even make a proper impression in the fandom. Can anyone actually recall who the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) was hanging out with? Among the long list of companions in Doctor Who's history, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) stand out as some of the most divisive time travelers that the Tardis has ever seen. While some fans are absolutely smitten with them, others see the couple as poorly written and their exit as one of the most sloppily...

The Doctor has had no shortage of friends over the past sixty years. With Doctor Who’s continually evolving cast list there have been many stand-out faces, and many we’d love to forget, but there’s one companion in particular, who back in 2007, received far more hate than she deserved. When the cult BBC sci-fi show returned for its third season, it had the hard task of replacing fan-favorite companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), whose romantic feelings for David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor had fans sobbing come her sudden departure in Season 2’s finale, “Doomsday.” After a brief Christmas adventure that introduced the equally iconic Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), the Doctor suddenly found himself trapped in a hospital on the moon being hunted by space-police Rhinos, the Judoon – just another day in the office for Tennant’s Doctor, right? Caught in the middle of it all, is a young...

Freema Agyeman’s departure from the New Amsterdam cast had a huge impact on her co-star Ryan Eggold. Adapted from Eric Manheimer’s book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital, the show revolves around the newly hired medical director of one of America’s oldest public hospitals and his goal to shake up the antiquated institution by unraveling its bureaucracy. Ryan Eggold stars as Dr. Max Goodwin, the medical director at New Amsterdam Medical Center, opposite Freema Agyeman as Dr. Helen Sharpe, Head of the Oncology Department. Throughout the first four seasons of New Amsterdam, Max and Helen’s romance became the emotional core of the series.

It was a busy television season when it came to departures and exits.
We lost many beloved characters in various ways, but a consistent pattern was for those departures to be underwhelming, disappointing, and downright offensive.
Whether the reasonings didn't make sense, the behavior felt "out of character," or the methods lacked originality, our TV Fanatics had much to say about their worst character departures of the 2022-23 season.
So check out our list below, and hit the comments with your reactions!
1. Helen Ghosts Max Via Letter - New Amsterdam It felt like New Amsterdam Season 5, the final season of the series, did everything in its power to assassinate the character of Helen Sharpe, starting with her ghosting Max. Instead of showing up for their wedding, she sent him a "Dear, Max" letter apologizing and saying that she wasn't coming back and couldn't do any of that anymore, leaving him and Luna in the lurch.

There are several perfect actors who could take on the role of Storm, who could very well be on her way to the MCU. Aside from an appearance of a Professor X variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there's been no word of the McU's X-Men team, but that could soon change as more mutants are expected to appear throughout Phases 5 and 6. The potential formation of the X-Men could come with the arrival of Storm, as her character is crucial to a significant portion of their stories in Marvel Comics.
So far, she's been played by two different actors on the big screen. Halle Berry debuted as Storm in 2000's X-Men, and the role was later taken on by Alexandra Shipp in X-Men: Apocalypse. In Marvel Comics, Storm - real name Ororo Munroe - is one of the most powerful members of the X-Men, and is often...

Jason Isaacs and Doctor Who actor Freema Agyeman presented the award at the BAFTAs this afternoon.
In an emotional acceptance speech, creator Lecky dedicated the win to her mum, who passed away recently.

A new Doctor Who art recreates the Tenth Doctor's meeting with his daughter, Jenny, in a 15th-anniversary post on the episode "The Doctor's Daughter." Jenny was portrayed by Georgia Tennant, who starred alongside husband Tennant, Catherine Tate, and Freema Agyeman in the season 4 episode that aired in May 2008. Doctor Who season 4 saw the Tenth Doctor reunite with one-time companion Donna Noble (Tate) as they traveled through space and time, witnessing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and fending off a Sontaran invasion to a glimpse at a potentially darker timeline.

Dreamland, like the Margate amusement park it’s named after, wears its brashness on its sleeve. Three minutes into the Sky Atlantic comedy, which is based on Sharon Horgan’s award-winning 2017 short, viewers have already been exposed to inflatable penises, a cannibalistic bunny, and, erm, “perineum oil”. But beneath the slapstick and cotton-candy hues, dark family secrets are lurking. There’s also commentary on class and race dynamics in British seaside towns. All of these elements play out to varying levels of success, but you can’t fault Dreamland for trying. Everything it does, it does with gusto.

Medical dramas are a dime a dozen, but New Amsterdam stands out for a few reasons — mainly, the New Amsterdam cast. While the main story is that of a charming medical director who isn't afraid to adopt unconventional methods to get things done, beneath the surface of every episode is a poignant statement about the state of medical care. Whether it's pointing out how medications could get into the right hands if medical directors from different hospitals would simply communicate with one another, to ways to balance concerns about opioid addictions with patients who legitimately need them, there's a thought-provoking message in every episode.
That, in part, is what makes New Amsterdam resonate so well with fans and why the series is rose the ranks as one of the best medical dramas on television. But the series still wouldn't be such a success without its amazing cast, which includes a...

The climax of "The End of Time", David Tennant's final Doctor Who adventure as the Tenth Doctor could have happened 36 years earlier if it weren't for a tragic accident. Airing on New Year's Day 2010, "The End of Time, Part 2" brought back the Time Lords, whose scheme to survive the Time War put all of humanity at risk. When the Doctor was unable to kill Rassilon (Timothy Dalton) and send him, and Gallifrey back into the nightmare of the Time War, the Master (John Simm) obliged instead.
While the Master was mostly acting out of revenge for having been used as a vessel for the signal needed to shift Gallifrey through space, his sacrifice can also be seen as an attempt to save the life of his former friend, the Doctor. Before Doctor Who's Christmas and New Year Master story in 2009/2010, 1970s script editor Terrance Dicks and producer Barry Letts...

The new era of Doctor Who is set to have a number of spinoffs, which could be led by former companions. Russell T Davies previously created The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spinoff vehicle for Elisabeth Sladen following her emotional return in Doctor Who season 2, episode 3, "School Reunion". Season 1 companion Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) also led his own spinoff series, Torchwood, and it's expected that Rtd will continue this trend with his new era as showrunner.
Speaking at a BFI event to promote the release of Doctor Who Season 8 on BluRay, Jo Grant actress Katy Manning teased (via Radio Times) that "spinoffs (were) coming" and people were coming back. As a regular on the convention circuit, who also made a guest appearance in The Sarah Jane Adventures and the recent Jodie Whittaker finale "The Power of the Doctor", Manning is a reliable source. Jenny is the Doctor’s only child, but despite being such a unique character, Jenny never returned to Doctor Who. The Doctor’s (then David Tennant) daughter (Georgia Tennant) first appeared in season 4, episode 8 “The Doctor’s Daughter” and was created from a DNA extraction the Doctor was forced to give when he, Martha (Freema Agyeman), and Donna (Catherine Tate) land on the planet Messaline. Jenny is actually a clone, as the inhabitants of the planet had been churning out clones of themselves to supply their army for the war of Haths versus humans.
Jenny and the Doctor’s story was very turbulent, from the Doctor not accepting Jenny as his child to Jenny taking a bullet for the Doctor to save him. Throughout the episode the Doctor does start to see Jenny as his own and teaches her his morals, causing him heartbreak when she dies, and he soon departs Messaline.

Russell T. Davies' return to Doctor Who could see the return of several old heroes and villains from his previous era, including one enemy who desperately needs a revival. Davies' previous run of Doctor Who has been widely regarded as one of the best eras of the long-running BBC series, featuring Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant as the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, respectively. While Steven Moffat's subsequent era received a generally positive reception, Chris Chibnall led one of the most divisive eras of Doctor Who, so Davies' return is highly-anticipated among fans.
With the return of Davies to the role of showrunner, there is speculation about which characters from his era might see a return. Along with David Tennant's return, Catherine Tate will be reprising her role as Donna Noble from Doctor Who season 4 for 2023's 60th-anniversary specials. Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) love life may have been left up in the air at the end of the New Amsterdam series finale, but a couple episodes earlier, he did make a choice between ex-fiancée Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) and new love interest Dr. Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank). In Episode 11, “Falling,” directed by after Max learned Helen was back in New York and she reached out to him to meet up, he avoided her by taking everyone on a day trip hiking (which took a dangerous turn). Wilder, however, told him he should go, so he could look at Helen and decide what he really wanted because “you can’t run forever. At least not with me.” He did go to the bar, but only watched Helen from outside before going to see Wilder. “You told me to make a choice,” he said before kissing her.

When New Amsterdam checks out after five seasons on January 17, expect the heartfelt hospital drama to go gentle into that good night. “The finale has [only] one medical story,” says showrunner David Schulner, because the majority of the two hours are driven by the characters’ personal stories: “Everyone is looking to heal — to repair the core trauma that started their journeys in the pilot episode.” That means surgeon Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) comes to terms with the idea of what it means to be a perfect family. ER doc Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) deals with the trauma of leaving her sister behind with their alcoholic mother. And psychiatrist Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) is owning the feeling that he’s not worthy of the marriage he’s in. Ralph Bavaro/NBC Medical director Max Goodwin, meanwhile, must define his future with his ex-fiancée, doc Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman). According to Schulner, the...

Before Andrew Garfield broke out as Peter Parker in the Amazing Spider-Man movies, and before he bagged a few Oscar nominations, the English-American actor appeared in the TV series Doctor Who. This was in 2007 when David Tennant was playing the titular doctor and Garfield was a relatively unknown actor with just limited screen credits on British television. He played a supporting role in just two episodes, yet the appearance still foreshadowed early hints of his dramatic prowess. And for diehard fans of both the actor and the British sci-fi show, the role serves as an amusing blast from the past.
As a Doctor Who actor, he shared screen space with Tennant's Tenth Doctor and other classic characters, such as the Doctor's companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) and a handful of evil Daleks. While Garfield never returned to the Doctor Who universe after his post-Amazing Spider-Man stardom in Hollywood, he seems...

Welcome back to New Amsterdam, Dr. Cassian Shin! TV Insider has learned exclusively that Daniel Dae Kim is returning for the New Amsterdam series finale, airing on January 17 on NBC — and we have a first look at him scrubbing back in with the photos above and below. Cassian returns to help with a harrowing procedure to save a patient with a very rare disease that’s barely treatable — and he’s not the only one who will be part of this operation. It’s going to take every highly trained surgeon the hospital has ever known. Kim appeared in six episodes of the second and third season as the head trauma surgeon, with his introduction initially set for the episode about a deadly flu pandemic in New York City that did not air (due to real-life circumstances). Cassian briefly dated Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), and in the last episode in which he was seen,...

It's a great (and somewhat confusing) time to be a Whovian. Although Ncuti Gatwa has been announced as the next Doctor, and Millie Gibson's been announced as the next companion, these are not the main characters we'll be following as we head into the 60th Anniversary Specials. Instead, those three special episodes will be focused on the return of the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant), who is now technically the Fourteenth Doctor too. There's also the return of Donna Noble to look out for, as well as the return of the old showrunner Russell T. Davies, who ran the revival show from seasons 1 through 4.
The one thing we know for sure is that, when those specials are over, we will get a regular season with Gatwa and Gibson. With Davies sticking around as showrunner, you'd think it'd be safe to say that most of the returning characters would be from those early seasons.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for New Amsterdam Season 5 Episode 11 “Falling.”] Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) goes from “how can I help?” to “how can I avoid?” in the last New Amsterdam winter premiere. After learning his ex-fiancée Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) is back in New York, Max is struggling. Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) laughs when he finds out, but Max doesn’t think it’s funny, especially given that the progress he’d been making with Dr. Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank) ground to a screeching halt the moment that he saw his ex on the TV. Max doesn’t know if he’s going to see her — she hasn’t even reached out — but Reynolds thinks he should at least be curious if she still has feelings for him or came to New York for a reason. But, as Max admits, he can’t open that door and fall back into something he worked ...

Companions on Doctor Who are almost always tragically removed from their experience from the Doctor, with the only exceptions being Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), and all the 13th Doctor's (Jodie Whittaker) companions, who make it out by choosing to leave on their own. Rose Tyler's (Billie Piper) well-known exit from Doctor Who is often deemed the most tragic departure as she was ripped away into an alternate universe, thus ending her romance with the Doctor. However, Rose was at least able to gain the chance at a life with a clone of the Doctor with a mortal lifespan. That puts Donna Noble's (Catherine Tate) companion arc as the most tragic in the Doctor Who series to date — yes, more than that of Rose, Amy (Karen Gillan), Clara (Jenna Coleman), Bill (Pearl Mackie), Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen), and even Adric (Matthew Waterhouse), one of the few companions to die on Classic Who.

Doctor Who has said goodbye to many companions over the years, but it missed giving two companions of the Eleventh Doctor the perfect farewell. Matt Smith became the Eleventh Doctor in 2010 and quickly met Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), and they accompanied the Doctor for a long time, and through many adventures. The trio stayed together until season 7, episode 5, “The Angels Take Manhattan” when Amy and Rory ended up stuck in 1930s New York with the Doctor unable to reach them.
The BBC released an unfilmed epilogue, titled "P.S." for Amy and Rory’s Doctor Who departure that would have been the perfect farewell to the Doctor’s companions. The epilogue focuses on Rory’s dad, who first appeared in season 7, Brian (Mark Williams) having received a letter from Rory, delivered by a man who turns out to be Amy and Rory’s son. The...

The showrunner of New Amsterdam previews plenty of twists and turns for the series finale. Since its debut in 2018, the NBC medical drama has followed Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin. Becoming the medical director of one of the oldest public hospitals in America, Goodwin makes clear his goal to reform the neglected facility by putting what resources he can to assist the patients in need. The series has also starred Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, and Tyler Labine.
It was announced in March that, after a successful run, which has included international adaptations and talks of a spinoff, New Amsterdam would end with season 5. After taking a timeout of sorts for its overturned Roe v. Wade episode, New Amsterdam will revisit the growing bond between Max Goodwin and Elizabeth Wilder in this Tuesday’s installment (NBC, 10/9c).
The Nov. 1 Roe v. Wade episode “actually goes back in time to July, when Max has just recently been dumped, left at the altar by Sharpe. So in Episode 7, there’s no feelings there [between Max and Elizabeth] because Max is still grieving over Sharpe,” showrunner David Schulner explains. “We couldn’t advance any relationship in Episode 7,” including Iggy and Martin’s separation, “because it happened earlier than where we are now in our timeline.
