Italian director Italo Spinelli speaks with Utpal Borpujari on how he chose  Mahasweta Devi’s story  “Choli Ke Peeche”  for his debut feature Gangor.

Italo Spinelli with Mahasweta Devi

Writer-activist Mahasweta Devi’s story “Choli Ke Peeche/Behind the Bodice” is a stinging indictment of exploitation of tribals as well as the media’s insensitive, if not sensational, handling of delicate issues. It is this story that Italian director Italo Spinelli has chosen to make his debut feature film with. Spinelli, who has earlier directed several documentaries and has been a long-time India lover, shot the film on location in West Bengal’s Purulia area, of late in news for Maoist activities, with a cast that includes Love,Sex Aur Dhoka fame Priyanka Bose, Adil Hussain and Nri actor Samrat Chakraborty. ‘Life of Pi’ Gets a New Release Date

2 June 2011 10:30 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Briefly: Now that Peter Jackson's next film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has a firm release date [1] of December 14, 2012, it is time for other studios to start reworking their December schedules to get out of the way of the Middle-Earth juggernaut. The first project to scramble out of the way is Life of Pi, Ang Lee's adaptation of Yann Martel's novel. Fox has just moved the film to December 21, 2012, which is still a pretty damn good date for the film. The project has taken a long time to come together, with several directors trying to get the adaptation going. It is finally moving forward as Ang Lee was able to come up with a plan to make a 3D film that met with Fox's approval. Suraj Sharma, a high schooler from Delhi and newcomer to acting, has been cast as the film’s title character Pi Patel — the teen who, »

As production on his upcoming adaptation of Yann Martel’s novel, Life Of Pi, kicks into gear, director Ang Lee is looking to a past partner for this new project.

Variety has revealed that star of The Ice Storm and Ride With The Devil, Tobey Maguire, will be re-teaming with director Lee for the upcoming film.  He joins Suraj Sharma, Gerard Depardieu, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain and Tabu in the film, which follows a young man named Pi who is ultimately shipwrecked in a lifeboat with a tiger, in the Pacific Ocean.

Sharma will take on the lead role, with Maguire attached to play a writer, who talks to Pi about his life and this particular adventure.

The film is slated for a December 14, 2012 release, so it is still quite a bit of a ways off, but it’s interesting to see what Maguire has done with his career post-Spider-Man. »

Tobey Maguire Leads Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi

9 April 2011 5:18 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Ambition can be an admirable thing, and powerful when embraced, especially if coupled with sufficient aptitude to justify such pursuits. In the case of Tobey Maguire, this relation between desires and abilities has served him well through a number of fun but ultimately unchallenging roles, especially the Spider-Man franchise, and he is now able to command multi-million dollar fees for each film role.

With his part now secured in the forthcoming adaptation of bestselling philosophical fantasy novel Life of Pi, however, Maguire has perhaps committed to a project of profound folly.

Maguire is set to play a journalist interviewing the protagonist Pi as he relates the tale which makes up the large part of the novel, that of him being stranded on a boat with three anthropomorphic animals who eat each other in order to survive. And, if this doesn’t seem an infinitely unfilmable piece already, Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain »

Tobey Maguire Signs On For A Supporting Role In Life Of Pi

8 April 2011 5:37 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I read Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi about eight years ago and admit I don't remember it that well, but my salient memories are definitely about a young boy cast away at sea on a boat that also houses a Bengal tiger. With that in mind I can't quite figure out how the film version, which Ang Lee will direct, has already managed to include Gerard Depardieu, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain and Tabu in the cast, along with newcomer Suraj Sharma to play Pi. Now the biggest name of all has joined the cast, and I'm even more confused. According to Variety Tobey Maguire is on board to play a journalist who interviews the adult Pi (Khan's role) about his remarkable experiences on the boat. Given that the adult Pi section seems to mostly serve as a frame story it doesn't seem like Maguire's role will be particularly big, »

Tobey Maguire Joins Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi

Variety is reporting today that Tobey Maguire has signed on to co-star in Ang Lee's Life Of Pi. He'll play "a writer who interviews him about his life-changing experience.” This will be Lee and Maguire's third film together, the first two being Ride With The Devil and The Ice Storm. Maguire joins a cast that includes Suraj Sharma, Gerard Depardieu, Irrfan Khan and Adil Hussain. It's nice to see this one finally picking up. There were a number of directors attached before Lee finally signed on in February of 2009. This is a novel that Hollywood has been trying to bring to the big screen for a while and I think it will make for a great film. I read the novel a while ago but from what I remember, I really enjoyed it.
