- Announced her candidacy for the governorship of California in the recall election of 2003. Her platform includes seven promises: legalization of gay marriage, taxation of breast implants, making lap dances a tax deductible business expense, wiring every room of the California Governor's Mansion with web cams, creation of a Porn for Pistols program to remove handguns from the state's streets, recruitment of performers in the adult industry as goodwill ambassadors, mandating jury duty for all Californians collecting unemployment, and freeing the porn industry from harassment by the government. - Finished tenth among the replacement candidates in the election to recall California Governor Gray Davis. She received over 10,000 votes which was more than celebrity replacement candidates Gallagher and Angelyne.
- In California's gubernatorial recall election on October 7, 2003, Mary finished 10th among the 133 candidates on the ballot. Running as an Independent, with her name appearing as Mary (Mary Carey) Cook, she drew 11,174 votes, 0.2% of the total.

- She once again has thrown her hat into the ring for the gubernatorial recall election to succeed California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a possible recall election in 2021.
- On June 14, 2005, she attended the President's Dinner in Washington, DC, an annual fundraiser put on by the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Mary and her boss, Mark Kulkis of porn production company Kick Ass Pictures, also attended a lunch prior to the event.
