He won a bronze medal in the 5000m relay in the Lillehammer Winter Olympiads in 1994 and was eventually the first Autralian to win a Gold Medal in Winter Olympiads in Salt Lake City in 2002 for the 1000m race (followed by Alisa Camplin in the same Olympic Games) for which he was called "the luckiest gold medallist".
