Terrence Howard Has An Empire To Protect In Trailer For Fox’s Midseason Hip-Hop Drama

Fox’s fall lineup, Gotham aside, has delivered a whole slew of disappointments, with heavily promoted reality series Utopia landing softly and new series like Gracepoint, Mulaney and Red Band Society proving dead on arrival. However, maybe midseason hip-hop drama Empire will turn things around for the network.

Featuring a star-studded cast led by Terrence HowardTaraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe and Courtney Love, the show is looking increasingly like a potential hit. Like ABC’s Nashville, which is currently in its third season, Empire aims to blend the soapy, scandalous drama of Dynasty (which show creator Lee Daniels, of The Butler and Precious fame, has cited as an inspiration) with toe-tapping music. And judging by the first trailer, which you can check out below, the series has been wholly successful in that endeavor.

Empire: Fox Orders Hip Hop Family Drama for 2014-15

Fox has ordered yet another new TV show for the 2014-15 season. Empire revolves around the world of hip hop with Terrence Howard starring as industry heavyweight Lucious Lyon. He's a tough but wise patriarchal figure.

The show's cast will also include Taraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe, Trai Byers, Kaitlin Doubleday, Grace Gealey, Bryshere ‘Yazz the Greatest’ Gray, Jussie Smollett and Malik Yoba.

Lee Daniels’ Hip-Hop Drama ‘Empire’ Gets Series Order at Fox

“Empire,” the drama project from Lee Daniels and Danny Strong set in the world of hip-hop, has received a series order at Fox.

The family drama from Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV stars Terrence Howard as industry heavyweight Lucious Lyon, a tough but wise patriarchal figure. The cast also includes Taraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe, Trai Byers, Kaitlin Doubleday, Grace Gealey, Bryshere ‘Yazz the Greatest’ Gray, Jussie Smollett and Malik Yoba.

The project reteams “The Butler’s” Daniels and Strong, who co-wrote the pilot with Daniels directing. Grammy Award-winning Tim “Timbaland” Mosley wrote the music for the pilot — marking the first time Mosley has worked so closely on a drama pilot. Exec producers are Brian Grazer, Daniels, Strong and Francie Calfo.

Enter the fantasy world of the upcoming ‘Dragon Warriors,’ with the first trailer and poster from the James Marsters-starring film. The former ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ actor portrays the movie’s lead villain, Lord Tensley, who seeks the hand of the beautiful princess, Lady Ennogarad (Kaitlin Doubleday), in the promotional video and poster from the fantasy film. ‘Dragon Warriors,’ which also stars Adam Johnson, Maclain Nelson and Luke Perry, was written and directed by Nelson and Stephen Shimek. Fox’s Empire has rounded out its cast with the signing of Kaitlin Doubleday (Catch Me If You Can) as a series regular. The hip-hop industry drama pilot from Lee Daniels, Danny Strong and Brian Grazer centers on Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), a charismatic, savvy music superstar who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public. Doubleday will play Rhonda, the wife of Lucious’ oldest son Andre (Trai Byers), a sexy, manipulative woman who shares Andre’s Ivy League background and intends to help him scrap his way to the head of Empire.
