Felicity Jones (l.) takes it to the Alps in Chalet Girl.

Adorable Felicity Jones (The Tempest) stars in the snowy 2011 romantic comedy film Chalet Girl.

Reminiscent of a female Aspen Extreme, the movie stars Jones as pretty tomboy Kim, a one-time champion skateboarder who now flips burgers to support herself and her dad. Opportunity comes knocking when she lands a winter-long catering job in a plush ski chalet in the Austrian Alps.

At first, Kim is overwhelmed by this bizarre new world of champagne-sipping posh people, epic mountains and waist-deep powder. But then she discovers snowboarding, and her natural talent soon sees her training for the end-of-season competition, which could win her major prize money and maybe even the affections of her boss’ handsome son Jonny (Ed Westwick, TV’s Gossip Girl).

Chalet Girl Movie Review

Title: Chalet Girl Director: Phil Traill Starring: Felicity Jones, Ed Westwick, Tamsin Egerton, Bill Bailey, Bill Nighy, Brooke Shields, Sophia Bush, Ken Duken, Nicholas Braun, Tara Dakides Sliding into Chalet Girl is the equivalent of being transported into a cute 96 minute extended anecdote. Set on a glamorous ski resort in Austria, this coming-of-age/rom-com is just too cute to rip on. Yes there is cliched storytelling techniques found within the movie mechanics and the outcome is never in question. But the seasonal atmosphere is fun to take-in, and the British style of acting provides a nice change-of-pace in an all too familiar tale. 19 year-old Kim (Felicity Jones) had a »

Blu-ray Review: Chalet Girl Is A Teeny, Icey Rom-Com, That Isn’t Quite All Downhill

3 October 2011 7:33 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

The pitch: Bridget Jones on ice meets Flashdance.

Chalet Girl not your usual British rom-com then? Well, not exactly, because not everyone’s entirely flawed (it seems the Curtisian generation defines the romantic as foolish, but in a good way), but it still follows the well-trodden path in its own way. There are still a raft of cliches involved, and if you find anything surprising in the plot, you’ve got a better eye than me, but for something so unashamedly familiar, it’s not a terribly off-putting film.

The plot is reasonably simple: the chalet girl in question is Kim (Felicity Jones), who is forced to look for extra income when her dad’s (comedian Bill Bailey) debts mount, and finds the opportunity as a chalet girl working in the service of Richard (Bill Nighy), his wife Caroline (Brooke Shields), and their sons Nigel (Nicholas Braun) and Jonny (Ed Westwick »

Mark Kermode's DVD round-up

Senna; Point Blank; The Housemaid; Chalet Girl

The very best documentaries should not only inform and entertain viewers with a working knowledge of their areas of scrutiny but also engage the interest and emotions of those who know little (and perhaps care even less) about the subjects. Recent homegrown examples include Julien Temple's brilliant Oil City Confidential, which proved a satisfying and thoroughly cinematic experience for non-aficionados of Dr Feelgood's brand of "Thames Delta blues"; and TT3D, which found in Guy Martin a voluble mouthpiece for the madness of the Isle of Man motorbike races that almost every year claim lives.

Equally remarkable is the emotional conjuring trick performed by director Asif Kapadia with Senna (2010, Universal, 12), which delves into the world of Formula One racing, arguably the most elitist, non-inclusive sport in the world. In a crucial and telling moment, the film's eponymous enigma reveals a longing »

Submarine (15)

(Richard Ayoade, 2010, UK/Us) Craig Roberts, Yasmin Paige, Noah Taylor. 97 mins

Ayoade evidently did his homework before stepping behind the camera, swotting up on everything from the French New Wave to The Graduate to Wes Anderson, but the result is a fresh and distinctly British-flavoured coming-of-ager, full of provincial frustrations and recognisable types. The story takes few risks – an intelligent Welsh schoolkid's quest for self-definition and sexual adventure – but Submarine works hard to earn our affections with a mix of sincerity, energy and impeccable comic timing.

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger (12A)

(Woody Allen, 2010, UK/Us) Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, Gemma Jones. 98 mins

The ever-scrappier Allen observes life's frivolities with a bemused but cheerless eye in a London comedy whose great cast compensates for the fatalistic outlook.

Route Irish (15)

(Ken Loach, 2010, UK/Fra/Ita/Bel/Spa) Mark Womack, Andrea Lowe, John Bishop. 109 mins

Review: Chalet Girl – Clean, Simple, Feel-Good Fun

14 March 2011 3:26 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Chalet Girl is an against-all-odds film in just about every sense imaginable. It’s not just that the protagonist, Kim (Felicity Jones) is a former skateboarding prodigy reduced to working menial jobs to support her depressed dad (Bill Bailey) following the death of her mother. Nor that she then manages to get a well-paid job tending Chalets in the Alps despite not being a posh girl called Petronella. Nor even that she then learns to snowboard and starts a budding romance with a rich investment banker (Ed Westwick). Nope, the overcoming of odds runs deep within this film’s DNA.

For a start, who would have thought a film about an ordinary London lass becoming a chalet girl (for those of you who don’t know, a chalet girl is a maid in fancy skiing lodges, or chalets) could get funded and made? Especially since the »
